Its hit or miss. the beach there is very flat and I found it hard to read the water when I tried there. Call riptide b&T, andy will point you in the right direction.

On Friday, I was there at the north end of a picket line, I got nothing fishing clam and worm. Saw 2 shorts pulled in in 2 hrs and 1 puppy drum.

This was just south of the hotel. I know for a fact a good bite of *large* came in with the tide closer to noon or so. Same place.

Same time, some got fish near the inlet.

So, it's timing... I couldn't stay ... I would've if I could've.

The shop said anywhere on the Island has been getting fish. So, you just got to be there.

I've been there 3 times this season with clam and have nothing to show for it.
Others have had good fishing.

It is flat featureless beach, I couldn't read any rips to speak of.

People with experience know where to set up, but to me it all looks the same. Probably why im there for a few hours, then give up

Surf fished around the Hotel on Monday afternoon 5/18. Clams for bait - fished 2 hours before and 1 hour after High tide - NADA. Saw 1 short beached about a block south of me.Checked out the Sea wall - saw nothing going on. Heard of a couple weighed in from the Hotel area(same spot I was at)--must have happened before or after I fished. Lots of grass and needed 6 oz.sputniks to hold - I had 4's and 5's -- line kept being swept down and back up the sand. Then again my equpiment is Not really big enough -- 6 1/2 ft.ugly sticks---I know they are too short for most surf conditions,But,have caught many a fish in the suds using my uglies with fin'nor #12 ahab and 7500 penn gold spinners.
Timing for one -- but will have to invest in a REAL surf rig.My uglies work great on jetties, wrecks when sea bassing(20 lb.mono both reels and i boat most of my wreck fish) and great in the rips for stripers..even flounder fishing. Great ALL-AROUND outfits - except for surf fishing.

Billo, I'm convinced getting past the 1st or 2nd wave is necessary there.

Also perhaps there are some cuts to fish, though in my couple of times at the hotel, I haven't seen any structure to speak of (other than the rocks... might be good at the right tide)

I'm a brig newbie though... some guys have def been catching, that's for sure.

I've done mostly boat fishing for stripes the last 20 years. Used to surf and jetty fish a lot years ago, mainly jetties(took me a few years to get my sea legs-used to heave in the back bays when i was younger) Main reason why I got into the beach fishing!
Been on boats a lot last few years(no more heaving over the side - even in the roughest ocean). Getting 'back into' the beach fishing for the different challenges and control of my time spent fishing and relaxing.(will NOT buy a boat unless i hit the lotto).
Lived in WW back in the mid-70's and used to nail the fish in the suds on 6 1/2 footers there. Times and beaches have changed. I guess this ole'cheap bastard will have to invest in a 9 1/2 foot outfit.
Yea - I saw the layout of the wave sets and agree - need to get past the 1st or 2 sets - didn't see any definite cuts(was there at high water though).
Thanks for the advice. Need to find a couple jetties with decent amount of water around them. Like the Nuns Home jetty at CMP years ago.

I got you MB, my mistake. I reread the post and now understand. But we have been getting 48-46 pounders and some of the guys are throwing back 30 pounders. The fishing has been great here and I'm glad to see it picking up in other places.

Don C

Had the spoons out for about 5 minutes the other day and just wasn't feeling it. I ran to check out some birds hovering and it was an all live bait day.

I always like the spoons later in the day when the crowd acts up along the beach and the fish move out a bit.

I've herd good things about the spoon bite as well Don. It's nice to have them in your pocket when it slows.

I hear ya Don. I'll be out early am tomorrow and then probably in earlier than normal. Then Monday morning most likely all day. I think the trick with the the masses will be to find some area to troll that has some bait and is deeper.

Once everybody goes back to work and school this week I'll be out everyday I can.
