Wilson,

I recently went through that with a 1991 115. It started right up this season and for 2 weeks before I launched it...at the ramp..first crank and ran like a top all day. The next day at the house...nothing..dead..no spark...I called a local mobile marine guy who told me my stator was bad..he ordered a new one along with a switch box..with the new parts on he still had a weak spark...he ended up replacing the key switch, which evidently had some issue with the kill circuit......I dont know if I actually needed the expensive electrical parts or the $35 key switch only...put she does run a little better and starts on the first crank w/o having to advance the throttle, etc.....so check the key switch....but you may also think about the age of your primary electrical components too...Good Luck!

More likely then not You only needed the ignitions/kill switch.

to the original poster.. was your battery charged completely, or was it drained some from the bilge pump? charge the batt. before you do anything.

I'd like to think that I got some benefit out of replacing the 18 year old main electrical components of what has been the best $1200 that I have spent in boating (bought it second hand). She does start much quicker and seems to run a little better, but I had a BIG bill...but it is the first bill for anything on this engine in 4 years. So I am ahead of the typical game.

After he cut the black/yellow wire from the old key switch, she said the spark got nice and bright....I asked if I could leave it that way and he said no if I wanted to be able to shut the engine down...

that's what the choke's for!

I'll tell ya those old stators were bullet proof. but $1200. will get you a cup of coffee and a donut when it comes to boat parts and labor anymore.

definition of boat= a hole in the water to throw another $1000. into.

Wilson,

I was talking to my dad (Carl - One More Yank) last night on my way home from work and he told me about you working on your boat. Are you the guy with the older 20' center consol that looks like a Mako?
