This was my first spring seriously fishing for stripers and it seemed to be on fire for about a month and a half and now it seems to be winding down for me.... Anyone else think the same?

How do you guys fish for em in the summer? In the bay?

Unfort every time I've tried to get out there the past week and a half there's been a noreaster, but I'm hoping its not. I'll be out all day Friday and Saturday, curious as to what the rain has done the bunker and the bass, hopefully didn't spread them out too much. Someone was telling me the Chesapeake schools haven't even fully moved up here yet, so I'm hoping July is good as well. We'll see....

I think the run will continue for a few more weeks, but i think the weather is a big factor this year, most fishable days are in the middle of the week and as such with less fisherman out, less reports come in.As for catching stripers in the summer months locally, i dont really target them after july. I usually go after fluke or go wreck fishing when im not trying for BFT.Around October i start lookin for the bass again.

I'll be heading out tonight in search of some bass. Not real optimistic with how the weather has been but I can't catch em sitting on the couch.

drew i think they are here, and all this rain will actually help keep them hear longer, it will keep the water temps to around 66-68 degrees, thus holding the stripers around a few more weeks, but we have been screwed up with tides and new moon, and all the debris in the water.

New moon may help us tomorrow night. Guess we'll see what happens. Ive half a mind to dive tomorrow night if we can get out.

What he said. ^^

Just have to change your technique. Night time is the right time from July 1-mid Sept, for me anyway. The spring run of trophy bass from the surf might be winding down, but smaller bass and keepers can be picked up all summer long. Even a renegade 30 #+ is pulled from the surf at least once in July and once in August every year by a lucky fisherman or two. So, while the big push might be nearing an end, there are renegades still around all summer and like I said, some keepers and even a rare trophy every once in a while on the surf, but low light conditions (overcast, foggy, raining, dawn, dusk, overnight) are your best shots for the next couple of months.

Good luck!

I don't know about you but I will be at it during the day for at least another month then it's time to fish in the dark.;)

The bass will be here as long as there are bunker schools. Bait=Fish.

If bunker are all up and down the beach with a west wind on a Saturday, and then no where to be found on a Sunday with a west wind after a rain where do you think they went.

Deep?

North?

Its pretty frustrating when you can only fish weekends.

Spring runs normally slow down end of June, and are officially over for me 4th of July weekend. Water gets too warm, fish to infrequent. That being said a 50lb could be pulled almost anytime under a bunker pod, right through August.

Last couple of yrs the fish stayed hot south of asbury all of July. Sooooo, it depends. Time to start thinking tuna anyway

I'm done with them. Hardly got out, but was out on one of the very best days, Memorial Day, and got my new personal best @ 43".
I'm thinking bonito on the ridge are anywhere from a few days to one week away.
Time for the summer fisheries.
Fluke, weaks, blues, kings, croaker, bonito, albies....plenty to keep me busy inside and outside.
I'm still looking for seabass, too.;)

Fished the Hook Tuesday. 3 guys, 6 blues to 13 pounds, none under 10 and between 60 and 80 bass to 12 lbs, none under 24 inches. It's not over yet.

I've been fishing them pretty hard for the past 6 weeks, and this week was by far the best. So I don't think its over yet, but this warm weather that's coming may get 'em off the bunker

The bass I found were on silversides or bay anchovies. Water was 68 degrees and crystal clear.

Shedder crabs in the back this time of year is deadly!

Someone else told me to do that. How do I rig em?

The bass season is nt over until January. What is over is the easy fishing now we have to work a bit. Crabs, rigged and live eels, night time plugging will get you bass all through the summer to the fall bite. Whats good is that alot of guys cant catch a fish without seeing the bait all balled up on the surface from the boardwalk so they hang up the gear till September.

I've been using a fishfinder rig to a 3' length of flouro finished with 3/0-4/0 octopus. Sometimes i'll slide a skirt over the leader but the bare hook seems to work fine. I cut the crab into quarters and save the soft "top shell" and get two baits out of it. If the crab is big I peel the shell off the claws and get a bait or two out of it. I also cut the legs off tight to the body to prevent spin. Hook one time through the knuckle. Just let it sit on the bottom locked up and wait for the rod to double. If your in the right spot it shouldn't take long to get the bite going!

There is a good article in the SWS about striper fishing in N Jersey in July.

Yes, blueclaws. Not softies, but the crabs that are getting ready to shed. If you are lucky enough to find those crabs that bite everybody in the surf that have just shed (can't remember the proper name Lady Crab i think?) they are straight money. I've heard of guys bridling them down south but never tried it here. A 3 1/2" crab is a big crab to bridle for schoolies but it would probably work.

Sounds fair. Ill have to set some traps in the bay, have a few spots I think will work and Ill be able to bail em.

I agree. North jersey has only a few hard to find schoolies left.

Are these calico's?

Onthehook
06-28-2009, 07:29 AM
Yeah, I belive you're right with Calico. Couldn't remember the proper name at the time. They are tough to find in the soft stage but every bass you catch towards an inlet or sandy bottom spits them up all over the boat!

Caught one in the fall a few years back (keeper size) and it's belly was filled with calico crabs and that was it. There were close to 2 dozen of them. When baitfish aren't present, they gorge themselves on whatever is around.

Yeah, you would know better than me. I don't fish a whole bunch in the heart of the summer. It seems that they are keyed in on crabs, shrimp, and whatever else is crawling around on the bottom this time of year. I usually won't leave the dock without a dozen shedders this time of year and can almost always find them in the same spots every time unless something major happens. I don't think these "spots" are real secret or real hard to locate. I hardly ever see any other boats in a night and when I talk to my buds who fish behind the same island, they have the same results. That tells me they are everywhere and willing to eat so no need to roll up on another boat in the dark and drop anchor on thier transom. Find your own little slice of heaven and enjoy a quiet summer evening:)
