If a boat is sitting in a slip in NJ waters does it need to have a valid/current registration? I would think it should. The reason I ask I see several boats on my dock with no current registration. The one has a 2007 license on it. From what I have witnessed, the owners are using it as their 'BEACH HOME'. I question its seaworthyness. I also suspect them of keeping illegal/short fish they caught from the dock. I heard the father yell at the one son to not open that cooler again and keep it locked after the son said 'At least we got some food'. I wanted to go over and inspect myself but decided not to get into a hassle with them since I had my 9 y/o son with me. :(

I believe it is like a car registration and it being parked on a public street...if on the water....then registered...
can't find a definitive code read...but DMV and State Police handbook say "in NJ waters"....

You have to look at which state the boat is registerd in.. Some states have the issue year on the sticker, but the boat registration is good for two years from that date. So if it says July 2007 the registration is good until July 2009. Makes no sence, but that's the way their systems work

I care about the type of people around my boat and I have no tolerance for people stealing resources that will some day effect my sons future fishing opportunities.

They are all NJ registrations.

before you get all upset about it.. have you thought that maybe the boats were stored at the marina or where ever, and the owners never put the stickers over the old, or haven't gotten around to scraping the old ones off??
I don't think that not having a valid registration is stealing resources that will some day effect your sons future fishing opportunities.
Our state politicians are the ones that steal the money that is earmarked for only specific benefits or resourses.
Look at the 4.3 billion dollars that went missing from our unemployment disability funds. Not even the state goverments money to play with. employers employees put the money into the system earmarked for that purpose only.
Our governor has been dipping into all kinds of specific earmarkd pots trying to balance the budget.
Clean up the corruption in our state government then your child will have a future

Don't forget about the money "borrowed" from the Police and Fire Pension. Still waiting for that money to be returned:mad: oh yea...they took it at 0% interest. Thanks Gov. Whitman

Your right, that's when the problems started with Christie...hammering the pension funds. Then she ran to DC to run the EPA and Bush shelved her.. Parkway Toll increases and that money is already spent(borrowed against) till 2086 I think I remember. Then they've doubled and tripled car/truck/boat/trailer reg prices in the last few years.. They should have just left Florio in. NJ runs better when the mob handles things...
I wonder if I can finance a 52 Viking with the big Cats till 2080? I'm 57 next month I should be able to hold out long enough to pay it off.. If it comes with a 30 yr warranty I'm set..lol...
My weekly BoatTest.com email had this in it today.. http://www.boattest.com/Resources/view_news.aspx?NewsID=3482
Called "The Rising Tide" About George Bush I and his 10% luxury tax on boats over 100K. Don't know why they are stirring this up again, but it's going to be on soon on these channels.. It's about how it almost did Viking in..

I agree with you about the politicians. As far as not having a valid reg, well I would agree if it was an 2009 expired sticker but a 2007? As far as stealing resources, the one owner admitted to me that they caught stripers. When I asked about the size and was told 20 - 23", my response was, 'So no keepers'. The conversation ended and I then overheard the conversation I mentioned above and they quickly departed. Am I over re-acting? I don't think I am in this case. Hopefully I am wrong.

I think your right about everything being better when the mob ran NJ.
I don't think it matters what party has control.
I think they are all crooks, the money just goes to different friends.
Never Satisfied.. I'd say something to the marina owners about the registrations if it bothers you that much. I wouldn't get involved directly with the boaters.

have you considered the possibility that he just forgot to put the new sticker on? happened to me in my truck, wasnt until I pulled up in front of my Brother in laws house who happens to be a state trooper, first thing he said is" your trucks not legal", . I had no idea,I got 10 million ohter things on my mind. 3 months expired..ha, inspected the next day.
if it really bothers you, mention to the guy his sticker is expired,he may be grateful for you bringing it to his attention.
and about the cooler,I tell my kids all the time "keep the cooler closed". not that there is anything illegal in there but they would leave the damn thing open all day if you let them and the ice would melt in no time.
maybe just a case of over reacting on your part, Me,I tend to mind my own bussiness, everything usually takes care of itself in time.

The sticker must be current if the boat is in the water. Even moble homes need to get a yearly registration. This is how the state keeps track of who paid sales tax and who is in the water.
