I have resident bass that come to my lights every night. I would love to tag a few of the bigger ones. What do I have to do to get tags? Also whats the safest way to tag a bass to ensure they survive? Thanks.

Has all the information you need to know about tagging. I feel that tagging bass is a lot easier than tagging fluke. The tag only goes through the fish in the meaty part by the dorsal fin...bass are pretty hardy

ALS has a new style tag that is like a zip tie, so you dont have to tie a knot, just stick and pull thru...

yea I heard about the new tags but the main tagging guy at ALS said he still prefers the ones...I would be interested in seeing what they look like though

The ALS guy give any reason why?
Ease of use? less harm to the fish? or durability? >>> Matt and I are looking for the one that causes least harm to the fish. We are more interested in doing it the 'right way', and the safest way.
If the ol' tags are the safest and most reliable way - We're in! But, we are also just beginning to tag, so ease of use is also a concern. The 'zip tie' tags seem like they would be for us, but I am wondering why the ALS guy prefers the other.
I am totally new to this, so please, any help would be awesome - I've been procrastinating on tagging bass for years now, and Matt is finally going to put my 'talk' to action
cheers,

If I was put put all of your talk into action it would take me two lifetimes.
Getting the ties that come with needles. I assume they are the new ones. They seem very easy to use. If anyone has a pic of a tagged bass please post. Thanks, great info.

Procrastinating is part of my daily life ;)
...and yours too :D
I would bet, it will be next Spring till one of us actually does indeed start tagging :p
How about I catch the bass, and you tag....I catch the bass, and you tag....I catch the bass, and you tag. Get my drift

He did give reason why the old tags were better but I forget now. As I talked on the phone with him for a few minutes, he talked me into using the old tags still even though I was interested in the new ones...

I don't own Wii Fishing! But, is that where you learned how to tie your knots?
I used to catch bass competitively, but now it is even more evident, they just really like me ;) ...it's too easy :fighting:
To everyone else, we still need some info about tagging! ...Matt and I are just doing are "usual bashing" before we fish together this weekend.

The new style tag uses a bigger needle and is like a zip tie. They are popular among the charter boats, its faster than tying knots. I prefer the spaghetti style like in this picture, uses a smaller needle, there small diamater tubing that you have tie off. So far this season me and my buddy tagged over 130 stripers for the littoral society.

Smellinfishy and Bucktail Willie are the big taggers that I know. I only tagged a few bass this year and zero flounder so far....I would give Jeff a call from ALS. He can give a you a ton of information..

Myself and a lot of guys use to tag a lot of fish for ALS until we found they were taking money from the PEW foundation which wants to stop people from fishing. When questioned about it they said the did get a good amount of money from them and losing a few taggers was not a big deal.
Don't know if they still do, but found it hard to support a group that takes money from groups that want to stop you from fishing.

Yeah that one short bass you caught this year must really love you. You know the one that missed my plug twice and hit yours when you cast to the spot i was fishing. Maybe some day you'll actually post a report. try photoshop.
I apologize for Greg being on this thread speaking his retardeeze. Back to the conversation...
Thanks for all of the info. I really want to see if the same bass come back to my light next season.

CapeMayRay, I almost missed this post with all the fun Matt and I are having...
In all seriousness, who do you tag for now? any society or foundation?

by far one of the worse places for a tag to be placed especially by fishermen that have no clue what they are doing
i have seen too many als tags that were butcherd thus causing some serious wounds in the bass
the dart tagging system under the scales along the top of the back is the best way to go for the health of the fish

That is the way ALS instructs their members to tag, they should know which way is correct.

i know
just saying its a great tag for returns but in the hands of fishermen that don't take the time to do it right its not good for the fish

I don't tag anymore. I miss it. It was fun to tag and I had good results with the ALS tags. They have the good set up and do a nice job. Sort of playing with a double edged sword. Just can't bring myself to support a group that is in part working against my best interests.
If I am wrong and they no longer except PEW foundation moneys I would come back onboard.

I'll make sure to ask. I'm an RFA SFFFA supporter so that would be like me buying a dallas cowboys hat. Thanks for the info.

CAPE MAY RAY---ALS DID TAKE MONEY FROM PEW BUT THEY TOOK THE MONEY AND AREN'T INTO ELIMINATING FISHING
in fact ,several of the directors are regular fisherman
The data generated is critical if we are going to have any impact on regulations. The flexibilty bill in Congress got signicant infomation from the tagging results
ALS does a helleva lot to preserve of wetlands and improving water quilty
WITHOUT wetlands and good water quality we won't be catching much of anything

I hear you Bucktail, but like in all politics those that provide the most money usually have more control. I hope you are right. ALS is a good group. If push would come to shove, I would bet they would sacrifice the tagging money over the pew moneys if they had to make the choice. Strictly business. I don't think you can have it both ways.
