Has anyone noticed the china/zebco version of the van staal crank? They have eliminated the star nut. It looks unfinished as there is a flat spot there and an allen bolt exposed..

I tried to order the replacement parts as they are still listed in the schematic and the 2009 catalog, zebco says they are no longer available. Its still an awesome reel however whenever I look at the crank its like there is a part missing.. Looks like the next reel I get will be a zeebass.....

i actually think its a design improvement

u no longer need to worry about keeping the star nut tight and when you tighten it applying too much pressure and breaking it off which has been known to happen

Not owning a VS myself, I too do like the way the older style knob looked.

But from a functional standpoint the allen screw is better, as it is capable of of much more torque; thus lessening the likelihood of loosening.

Even on my Penn reels the locking handle "nut" loosens from time to time.

i think it's much better too. the scew on that older version would seperate and strip. i finally replaced mine with the newer version and it's way better.

The zeebass will soon be made in china too. China owns a huge majority of the U.S. now, since we've borrowed so much money from them. Pretty soon all gymnasts that compete will be underage and we will have to accept it or there goes our pensions!!!:wave::huh::nuts::nuts::nut s::nuts:

I think the zeebaas has nicer machine work. Todays cnc machining is amazing. Durability wise there prolly equal.. The modular design on the zeebaas is def a bonus....

I agree... the nut will loosen itself occasionally, and there is no need for it.
