View Full Version : Hot jig for night time?

I had the chance to get out tonight and fish some of my old haunts in Stone Harbor. Fish busting all around me, sounded like a mix of weaks and blues. I tried all of the old standbys in terms of worms, including a red culprit worm, the bass assisan opening night pattern, a generic pink grub, and some new stuff I picked up down in Florida.

Is there a hot color this season that I have not yet been clued in on? I threw close to 10 different patterns out there and not a touch.

Thanks

110,
Don't know about Jigging them, but I would throw an old standby, a black Rapala, sub surface. I killed big weakies on that in Corson's when It still had a beach. If I had to use a jig inthe dark it would black, purple or dark green.

some nights when they are feeding like that try retrieving your lure faster, sometimes that works especially when they are feeding on peanut bunker. I have had that problem at night more than once and sometimes the fast retieve works

Ive been told small white bucktail when they are popping that much. Usually means they're eating spearing or grass shrimp. Or give teasers in front of a bomber or stillwater swimmer.

These are all good suggestions, and probably obvious things I should have been able to figure out. Sometimes I think you get so used to doing things one way that you forget to "think outside the box."

Thanks again.

110,
I'm with you on that one. I usually get stuck doing the same thing. I'll be trying more lures this year for the resident stripers in Cape May this summer, at night.

pink finesse on a light jig head is all you need, will catch it all!

I know the conventional wisdom is to fish black at night, but I've caught as many fish on white artificials at night, especially soft plastics in white.

I agree with fishpoint, another member of 24seven absolutely killed bass this season on white fin-s. I did well with a redheaded yozuri swimmer and a white mambo minnow.

This good news for me is that I have all of this stuff in my box. I think I have 3 or 4 of those cotton candies in a pack that I probably bought when I was 17 (15 years ago). Like I said, back to basics.

Going to give it a go tonight so I will let you know how it works out.

Thanks again for all the replies.

Went out tonight and managed what was probably a 1/1 catch in #6 line. Fat 21/22" fish. Only had less than an hour of good fishing due to NE blow caused outgoing tide to start about an hour late.

Funny thing is, I got him on the one worm that has caught as many for me as all the others combined; a red culprit. Go figure. At least I know I have not lost my mind.

While I often will use black at night it is usually on very dark nights where there are no lights nearby. When the moon is big like it is right now (IMO)there is more light available and some other colors can be seen better than on dark nights by the fish, and therefore productive, especialy around lights. On nights like you described the activity, I like to use a "small" Crystal minnow or finess. I think the small part is the key.

Question is were you guys under lights using the white's and pinks at night?

Combo,

I have often used those storm shad under lights around the peanuts, and have never been able to draw a strike. What color do you like?

Thanks
