I have been fishing down in the avalon area for several years and never seemed to hook into a striper. Though, I did catch one in a crab trap once. I start my beach house on sat and will have it to sept 12. I figured taking my kayak down this year could make things a little more interesting. Can you give me any tips or techniques. For example, things to look out for. I am not looking for any spots, but feel a bit lost while fishing for stripers. Either tips inside a kayak or on a beach will be most appreciated. I would love for this summer to be the summer I actually catch one on a rod.

I would browse the kayak fishing forum there are some great guys in there that are excellent fisherman and know how to use the kayak to their advantage. The only advice id give you is get some ligts and stay out later than the rest of the people. work the bridge shadow lines and the sod banks.

Work sod banks during dawn and dusk. Top water poppers like Smack-It Jrs are popular.

Thanks for the responses. Should I be parallel to the bank or perpendicular when casting?

The fish are usually close to the sod banks, so you want to be 15 or so yards away...and be casting close to the edge. Try not to get too close, you could spook them. If you see a small canal - that may be a good spot as some Striper could be looking for bait leaving or entering the canal. If you go to the flats, they could be all around you in high grass and/or chasing some bait, you just have to have the 'eye' to see them.
As someone said, use any type of topwater action (smack-it jrs, skitters, knuckhead jrs, chug bugs, etc). The ideal situation for me in Avalon - is high tide at dusk or dawn.
welcome to the barn

Go ask the guys at Moran's Dockside at 14th & Ocean. Buy a few plugs and see what they'll teach you.
