Fishing pier proposal called tourism boost
DOWNE TWP. -- For the past few months Cumberland County Freeholder Jeff Trout has envisioned people heading to Fortescue in order to enjoy a new fishing pier or to just sit on some benches and look out upon the bay.
"I have been thinking about it a lot," he said. "The plan is still in its infancy, but I think it would bring more people to Fortescue in the summer months and it would also bring in revenue because the more volume you have the more it helps."
Trout's plan for Fortescue would consist of a very large fishing pier at the south end of the island going into the bay.
"I would like the pier to be as large as I could get it," he said, "but we will have to wait and see where this goes."
A small tackle shop to sell bait and fishing accessories, as well as benches for people to sit and enjoy the sunset would also be part of this preliminary plan.
"This idea has been in the master plan of Fortescue for a few years now," he said, "so it is nothing they have not thought about already."
Larry Jordan, Sr., deputy mayor of Downe Township, said this is something he feels the township would be interested in, especially since they have already placed 600 feet of bulkheading along the shore front so people can fish or go down there and walk along the bay.
"Building a pier is an interest of the township," he said. "I can ensure he would have the backing of the township committee."
The idea for the pier, Trout said, came while he was fishing in Delaware.
"I took a trip to Delaware and I noticed they had some nice piers going into the Delaware Bay," he said. "I had been fishing in Fortescue before and I thought it would be a nice addition to bring to the people there."
Trout said he is currently exploring state and federal funding options for the pier, but does not want to get to involved in the project until he makes sure the people of the area are behind it.
"I have heard a little bit of feedback from the community and it has been positive, but I want to make sure everyone agrees with this idea," he said. "As for funding, I believe there is enough money in the state of New Jersey to do a project like this, one that is economically wise and ecologically safe. It is also a great way to boost the eco-tourism in the state."
Jordan agrees and said he is anxious to talk to Trout about his plans.
"I feel this pier would help the community in several ways," he said. "Families could walk out to the bay and fish and crab, maybe we could even include a tower, so people could look at birds and wildlife. It would be an asset to us and the price of the project doesn't get any better."

I think it is a good idea but where is everyone going to park. The Fort will get crowded but it will give some small businesses a boost.

Last year We fished the back of Fortescue creek On the incomeing tide for 5 hrs in JUNE and managed 52 pearch and two keeper stripers that were caught on live spot! There had to be 500 greenheads in my bimini overhead and not a single bite! Now the bad part: Sales for Cutters wipes will SkyRocket Wootem will retire a millionare and move to Hawaii Bug free! Mike
I think fishing piers are a wonderful thing. I think NJ could use a few more piers. However, instead of building a new one from scratch, try fixing the dilapidated ones that are still half there. Mike Hammer beat me to the bug thing. Here's an idea. Get the cooperation from Delaware, and build a fishing pier from nj to delaware.
Make sure they put the fishing pier where the fish are. Why not use the monies and stock the waters with fish. Say, weakies, you know, the ones on the sign. Fortesque, the weakfish capital of the world. Nah, just build the piers, and change the sign, Fortesque, the community of piers. HAPPY DAYS.

You know they only have about 50 people that vote from the greenhead capitol of the world, so who is going to pay attention to this resort. You would think they would do more to maintain the place. You would think with all the money spent there during the summer that those washouts would be taken care of.
Talk to Doug R. Maybe he could help. He is a freeholder that fishes in the bay out of Fortescue. Maybe he will even reply here on the Barn.
Anyway, not to change the subject but I talked to Ralph Knisell today and he does not know anything about the pier. He did give me a ear full about the dredging. He seems to think the dredging may not get done until next year due to the bad weather we are facing and I agree. He said, they can't even get the dredging barge to Forestcue from the north because of the bad weather.
You only have a certain amount of time to dredge the creek due to the environmental impact of the horseshoe crabs. So if there is not a break in the weather it might be delayed. Please understand this is my opinion.
The state is also suppose to put in new bulkheads at the Fort. Maybe that is when they will fix the washouts.
I highly respect anyone who can fish at the Fort in a cloud of gnats or greenheads. I think the gnats are the worse. I hate it when they get up my nose, in my ears, in my mouth and I start choking.

I AM INVOLVED AT THE LOCAL LEVEL IN POLITICS, AND YOU CAN BET THAT THEIR IS A GRANT AVAILABLE, POSSIBLY GREEN ACRES OR ANOTHER THAT WOULD FUND THIS PROJECT. I BELIEVE THAT JEFF TROUT IS ON THE RIGHT TRACK. YEARS AGO FOR THOSE THAT WHO CAN REMEMBER THEIR WAS A FISHING PIER IN FORTESCUE, AND A PUBLIC RAMP. NOTHING WILL GET DONE UNLESS THE LOCAL BUSINESS GET POLITICIANS INVOLVED.

The way Fortescue is run always amazed me. How many good people have fled the island due to the horrible taxes and the water rates? The return on the taxes is virtually nil. No trash pickup, limited police protection, bad roads, and construction material along the beach to protect it.
I guess a fishing pier would go real well with the gun toting maniac from across the creek who harasses anyone who dares set foot on public property near his spread.
Fortescue sits on a tremedous resource and just wastes away.

Why don't you take a deep breath and relax. I don't think the Barn is a place for you to attack people and call them names. This is no place to bad mouth people. If you don't have something nice to say about someone don't say it at all. It is as simple as that.
I posted this article because I thought it was something postive for the Fort. It was not intended to attack anyone. Stop being so negative and say something postive. It really disturbs me when you make negative comments like that here on the Barn.
We don't live in a perfect world but at least we can make a difference.

Wouldn't a pier at Fortescue be too exposed to the bay and west winds? Remember that 70 MPH blow a few months ago? And right now, I think it would be battered by ice.

Phil Twin D's Thats right on the money ,many have tried and unless you plan on removeing the pier in winter Nature takes care of it for you! They tried this in the Villas, Ice cut the bays and rivers as we know them and a few pileing will not stand in the way.

Freedom,
I hope your being safe and keeping yourself warm out on the water. It has to be brutal.
Good point, Phil. So I guess the question is how long will a pier last in the Delaware Bay with all this bad weather and high winds. Maybe Delaware can answer that question.

While progress is nice and a pier might draw some "tourism"...
I think enough has been done to rape and pillage the Jersey shoreline - Ocean and Bay. Remember when the Villa's were affordable ? Houses are selling in the $250K price range that were $50K less than 10 years ago ! Fortesque has a unique cottage village feeling about it, kind of a throwback.
What's next - Condo's in Port Norris ?
Let's leave the "bayshore" the way it is today, greenheads, gnats and all.

A truer statement has never been spoken. I looked at a place in Tuckerton, on a lagoon in 1993. Nice 2 bedroom rancher, deck, 50' bulkhead and floating dock. Price then ? $72,000. I thought that was way too steep. Price now, same house, sold in Sept 2003 - $228,000 !!!! Only improvement I saw was vinyl siding and and new windows, $10,000 at the most.
Mistylady, I stand corrected. I WILL buy a condo in Port Norris if they build them....

Jeff Trout is at least thinking of our area. Maybe we could ask him to put the money into cleaning up the construction debris along the beaches and put it into some artificial reefs for the weakies.
Also they could use the monies in those funds to do a little beach replenishment that would help. They also don't need another bait and tackle store but a pbulic restroom with some showers for the boaters would be nice it might even lead to more people staying overnight on their boats.

His material is pretty mild when compared to these rants. ;) My time in the Fort is to unwind and relax. Sort of a mix between "Knocking on Heavens Door" and "Things To Do In Denver When You're Dead". Rattle the local boys a bit, but the more attention you get in Trenton the worse it will be in the Fort. Personally I don't want to be in the house when the house burns down.
