Well....As you can see from my screen name I finally bought a boat! Something i've wanted for ever and i guess i finally broke the old lady down and got the go ahead. I'm not new to boating or fishing but I'm new to striper fishing in the fall....90% of the reason i bought a boat. I'm not asking for spots...i'll learn my own the old fashion way. What I would like to discuss is any advice to help my get started...ex....best tide to fish and where?? should i be drifting the inlet, trolling the beach, anchored in the bay. I'm sure everyone has their own methods and i'll soon have mine. I'm set up with tackle, rigs, and most of all the BOAT (1983 Mako, 20' CC...i love it already).
I'll be heading out Wed with two friends to try and make it happen. Hate to say it but I've NEVER caught a striper...caught just about everything else at one time or another. Sorry for the length but I'm soooo pumped about this fall.
I appreciate any insight that may be given...all the older posts i've been reading are great!!

stripers can be caught in back bays anchored up on soda banks with clam or casting lures, also around the bridges casting lures. you can get them in the rips drifting bucktails, eels, spot drifting over the rip lines. rips get a bit scary on windy days and also when crowded. when crowded its like bumper boats. you hook up and then 20 boats come flying into your drift line. another option is anchoring up in the back in any of the sloughs on the edges using bunker for bait on fish finder rigs. now matter where you fish most of your fish will come with moving water. seems the fish arrive in mass when the water drops into the 50's

Hog1..nice to hear of your new boat too...I've only had it out twice...once to get if off the trailer to put a new axle on it and the other was Sunday...went out of Brigantine....mainly to run the boat and iron out any problems...all is good so far...runs great and most importantly it floats!! Not used to two strokes though...Have to keep telling my self that they're supposed to smoke and idle rough. last boat i had was a 31' Pacemaker..it was my dads but he made me run it...i think he was to lazy to walk uptop. Going to keep it Cape May for the rest of the year. I love going down the shore with a boat when everyone else is pulling theirs out!!

Go to the "search" option on the message board, select "advanced search" and type "Capt Harv" in the search by user name section, then select the "striped bass forum" and run your search. You should have many posts come up from one of the better captains in the Cape May area who provides some great insights. Here is a link to a recent striped bass forum thread by him "Cape May Rip Tactics."

You may want to take a trip on one of the open boats like the Stalker II or Adam Bomb out of Snug Harbor to see how some of the best captains get their results.

Good Luck!

Right now you can get them in the back espically with the air temp dropping, the water temp should follow. Go to a favorite deep whole, anchor up,( i'm not familiar with OC so I can't help you there) use 6/0 7/0 gamagotsu circle hooks with 25-30lbs fluro leader with barrel swivel. Use a fishfinder rig on your mainline for the weight and I usually start with 3 rods and maybe work to 4 in the weeds aren't bad. Usually 2 hours before the tide and 2 hours after are the best times. use clam on your hooks and cut some up to throw chunks in the water.

When the fish start moving down from up north the trolling season will begin. And for chunking the Del. Bay I like the month of Nov. the best, although that is a long ride from OC.
