Where is that thread that says you should freeze extra striper meat in "3 tbsp salt per cup of water"? I thought that was too much salt and that he may have ment 3 tsp per cup, but I went with what it said and just ate one of the saltiest fish fingers I've ever eaten . All the meat I froze is SHOT!
Just want to respond to that thread so someone else dosen't make the same mistake.

I fished the inlet the last two Sundays and have come up with the big zero for the striped ones. Last year we did okay with a couple of good days with bird play and on the bars. We tried are hand at fishing the bars and trolling the only thing we could find was big blues. Only being able to fish on the weekends and this weather has been bummer. I would love to get some tips on how to fish the white water and the bars and what to look for. I am always looking to grow my Knowledge and become a better fisherman. Any help would be appreciated.

Can't find the thread you refer to...... still looking though.

I freeze all my fish in Food Saver bags. Filets only. No water. The stuff lasts over a year and tastes just fine.

I have a couple of appt's tom so I'm taking the day off. I stuck my hand in the burlap bag to pull a few clams out and was bitten by a sneaky green crab :please: I guess that really got me thinking about a togasauras.

That crab was trying to tell ya something. Ive sat out for awhile since they closed seabass:mad: but after the 16th its on.

KWest, a lot depends on your boat and your tolerance for fishing less than calm conditions. Fish can be caught anywhere from Grassy Channel out to inlet anchored with clam, but the less boat traffic/crowd the better. Most fish the main bar in the middle of the inlet which does produce, but don't think you have to be where everyone else is. Learn to read the water and figure out where the sloughs are between the bars all around the inlet. These will usually be between 6 to 10 feet deep and have white water on each side or noticeable rollers on even calm days. They will all have fish at any given time, but may not all be fishable safely in all conditions for smaller boats. If other boats are in the area do not run up close behind them and give plenty of room when anchoring. Good size stripers can make long runs. White water can also be very productive but dangerous, so use extreme caution and know that structures patterns before getting too close . Good luck.

I am hoping for a repeat of Sunday this Thursday. I can live with a few more days like that. Will also start going up the beach trolling and jigging for a change of pace. Freezer is full enough now so it will be mostly catch and release for remainder of the season. I am up for some togging as well. If any of you expert toggers have an openning over the next few Thursdays thru Sundays, I would be happy to help you fill your coolers.

I guess I will team up with Emily Lynn and Joe "Human Windlass" Zac on the 16th. Hopefully my windlass will be back from the hospital by then and reinstalled for the third time.
If MyMistress comes you will have to guard your poles because he likes to reel in every fish on the boat.He even made his neice cry when he grabbed the stick out of her hands the other day :D, and poor Lefty is in therapy now.

I have to work Monday thru Wednesday next week and Mon/Tue the following week. Free any other day those two weeks.

Been promising to take the guy who works 12x7x365  at the gas station fishing for months, and today was the day. He's never fished, never been on a boat, never been on the water, and obviously never caught a fish. He had a 6 hour window from work  so the goal was to make the most of it.

Broke the inlet at 6:30, and for 1 awesome hour, it was "fish on" every time the bait hit the water. There was a pretty rough learning curve, and phrases like "easy", "relax", "calm down", "no! no!! no!!!", "let the fish run", "stop screaming", "put down the net", and "lift up, reel down" meant absolutely nothing to this guy. He pulled SEVERAL hooks on nice fish, but eventually he got it, kinda.

Wound up boating 6 fish at 40", 38", 38", 36", 36", 34", and lost at least 5 or 6 due to attempted "beheadings", but he got back to work on time, and was grinning ear to ear.

Once we get him to calm down with rod, I'll work on showing him how to hold the fish for a better pic. ;)

PS- The big fish are back.

Long story short, we found what we were looking for when we found what they were looking for ;).

I assumed the answer that was no, and I didn't want to worry him about it, so I "fitted him" for a lifevest when I adjusted mine, and left them both out on the deck the whole time. But yeah, that thought "there's no way this dude knows how to swim" did cross my mind.

Slick calm conditions in the inlet today though, so it worked out ok.

The fish was way too big for the net, so netting it from the head resulted in him lifting the net as the fish slid back out with the hook tangled in the net.
When I netted his, I netted if tail first, so he could keep tension on the line and we could both boat the fish (me lifting from the tail end as he lifted with his pole). It was a big net, but not big enough.
My fish was beat by the time I had him boat side, I could have just grabbed him myself...but it got away like::razz:.

If it's too big for the net, then grab it by the lower jaw and gills and pull it in like that. Putting a fish's tail in/against a net just gives it a solid base to push off against and get away.

Never tail first. :naughty:

On a positive note though, it's kind of fun to face that moment of "uh-oh, how do we handle this?!?", isn't it? :fighting: ;)

Yes, it's a bad spot to be docked in general. You are fully exposed and you can't be there in a strong N.E. blow. When the sod banks get flooded, the bay comes right in! I was down there this morning and it looks like they won't be putting any boats back in until Sunday. They are flooded pretty bad.

Just called the marina to get lifted in tomorrow morning and they are still too flooded out to commit. So if anyone is going tomorrow and wants some company let me know. I may have to borrow some terminal tackle as I may not be able to get to the boat to get mine. I have my rods and whatever is currently rigged on them. :)

Couldn't take sitting here all day any more. Knew other boats would be venturing out today, so enough was enough. Teamed up with A Frayed Knot, and worked our way across a surprisingly flat bay and then out a very nasty inlet.

Set up for the last of the outgoing (which was still going "out" 2 hours into the incoming), and landed 5 fish between 30"-32" and relased 2 shorts. In honor of yesterday's spirited discussions about letting the big girls go, I opted to use a bonus tag and bring home the third fish today. Back at it tomorrow am.

PS - The water was beyond filthy today. Several times we filled a bucket half way with water to wash off our hands, and a couple minutes later, the bottom was covered in sand once it started to settle. Also, we had to net fish almost blind. If the fish was 2 inches below the surface you couldn't see it at all.

Went out with A Frayed Knot. Took some doing, and some searching around, and some patience, but we managed to get our 6 fish (with bonus tags). 5 between 28" (exactly) - 30", and one confused fish that was 36" and running with the wrong crowd. Threw back a few at 26"-28"ish

The bite was slow, and we have definitely had a group of barely legal fish move in. Back at it tomorrow am with dad.

Went down to put the canvas back on the boat that I had to remove Thursday night because of the wind. I decided to bring a rod and some frozen clam just in case the weather was nice enough to get for an hour or two. We got the canvas back on fixed a snap that was broken and decided to head out and look for the elusive striped ones. First set up the tide was screaming and all we could catch was salad every 5 Min. so we decide to make a move to some slower moving water. We setup and waited for a bought 1/2 hr we finally get a bite and finally broke the fall Striper skunk with a 29"er.

I have no idea what your talking about Joey:huh:.

Ummm, what cheap plasic rod holders? (Mini artificial reef now:D)

hahaha...boat came with those holders...with the canvas up the forward holders can't be used.(wasn't a problem during fluke season) I need to install new this winter. My guess is that the line was rapped around the rod tip, we usually keep the drag set. The rod holder snapped at the base. I'm just glad it wasn't one of my avets.

The rod fell right in that hole that the boat makes in the water. We all know the one i'm talking about.....

Well today was certainly an eventful day. Going to start off with the serious stuff first. We all like to anchor near the white water, and we all kind of know what we're doing (or "think" we do), and we all do kind of have it figured out (kind of), BUT..............

- When you're trying to find a "relatively safe" spot to anchor up, and you're not quite satisfied with what you're seeing, don't get lazy and settle for something that looks "probably ok".

- When you do get anchored up and your gut is telling you that you're pushing it, LISTEN!!!!!

- When your friend in another boat 100ft away tells you to watch your ass because it looks bad from his viewpoint, REALLY LISTEN!!!!

- And when you think it's bad enough that you need to get out of there, so you're going to give it 5 more minutes and then go, don't, just LEAVE NOW!

I don't know how bad that wave "looked" to the rest of you today, but it felt like we were REALLY close to getting flipped. I don't know how many gallons it put in the boat, but we almost knee deep until we got it drained/pumped out.

Seriously everyone, be careful out there. It goes bad FAST. And when you think you're pushing it too far, you almost certainly are. We got lucky today. :o

On the brighter side of things, once we got all of the water out of the boat, we limped around for a while licking our wounds, and decided the only right way to deal with this was to get right back in saddle and go catch a fish. (except maybe be a little more careful this time?)

Fished from 7:30am-2:30 today and had 1 bite the whole day. 1 BITE!!!! I don't know what it is with my dad, but everytime I bring him out, it's like we're jinxed. Thought we put an end to that nonsense last time I had him out, but here we go again, all day, and just one bite. Fortunately for us, it was a good one. The fish took half a spool before it slowed down, and I had to severly resist the urge to tighten the drag several times. Took about 15 minutes to get her in, but she was a beaut! Sadly, not 30 lbs. Per Scott's BT scale, it was 26 lbs and 43 inches. Still not a member of the 30lb club, but I'll take it.

http://i441.photobucket.com/albums/qq135/joeyzac/11-16-09Striper.jpg?t=1258416821

On a side note, Fishhead728, which boat were you today? We're you north of Fran, or the blue boat inshore of John?

On another side note, we couldn't believe the manuever pulled by the guy that blitzed past Fran and the blue boat, circled right over their baits, and then cruised by like it was no big deal. I think that's the first time I've ever heard Fran get mad, and he was right to.

In any event, glad to be alive, and back at it tomorrow.

Ok Joe you owe me a new pair of boxer shorts :D
All kidding aside, if you noticed how long it took me to set up today it was because I was watching the whole picture of how they were breaking and the fact it was outgoing tide. After I anchored up I was watching the way they were breaking where you were anchored. I told Diana Lipton who was fishing with me today,Joe better get out of there he's gonna get whacked within the next 20 minutes.I kept watching thinking you were going to make a move after a couple of close calls, then I said I better just give him a shout and a warning. ( I did have Rebait on speed dial  )
Within 5 mintues you took that hit and I almost shat my pants, I thought you were going to flip, good thing you didn't have another one behind it or you would have been in serious trouble.Diana actually screamed when she saw that wave hit you.

Round 2 with dad. Small Craft Advisory today, so we left the dock not quite sure what to expect but hoping for the best. Broke the inlet about 7:30 and tried to get to 2 different spots just outside, but it was no go. Had to go back inside. Found a spot that has produced in the past and anchored up with about 1/3 bushel of clams left that had a nice "stank" on it.

Conditions were a bit snotty. Windy, a little choppy in the bay, but doable. Only fished for 3 hours as we had things to do back home, but the fish rewarded us for the effort. We went 9 for 10 on hookups, with keepers at 39", 38", 34", 32", 32", 30", 30", 30", 28", and one short at 26". 4 came home and the rest swam away free to be caught another day. Was glad to get dad on some fish after yesterday's goose egg.

Don't know how, but somehow I got suckered into working the next 2 days. Back it on Friday. ;)

This morning it was impossible to get out to my favorite area unless you had a death wish or 60' boat. Found a spot semi fishable just passed the North cut, but only 1 hit in 30 min and was tired of getting beat up. Inside we went with only 1 just keeper sized fish.

Figured with the conditions to search around for better water. Went to an area I rarely fish but was pleased to see "easier" fishing conditions. Instantly had hook-ups. Went 9 for 9 with fish from 28" - 38".

NE winds 15 - 20 with outgoing water, no problem! :). You learn something new every day.

......JZ- saw that log in the morning, glad u posted the warning. I didn't notice it on the way in at 12:45?

We headed in at 11:30, so I can't say whether or not it was still there at 12:45. It was in the same spot from 7:30 till 11:30 with a tide change in the middle, so I assumed it was stuck in that spot.

Don't know what's worse, having the thing stuck in a high traffic area waiting to kill someone, or having it float around where it's harder to keep track of.

Either way, this thing needs to go. It's too big and too dangerous. Someone is going to get hurt.

LJ.....Today, you da man.

The regular crowd posting for LEI on this thread have kicked ass this season and we are coming up way light.

We saw one fish caught from 7:30 AM till we we bent our anchor in the heavy current off Holgate around 1 PM and had to go back into the bay.

A lot of debris fouling up our lines all day.

Will try again Sunday.

If I'm not mistaken I caught the first one around 12:15,and it built from there. There was another 25' Parker inshore of me and he was doing very well. I had a couple of bags of old frozen clam, after I started to dump them I had a good flurry where I couldn't keep a rod in the water.

I had a not so good day. One 27 1/2 inch striper was all I could muster. The parking lot was full when I got there so I tried something a little different and it did not work. When the Parker brothers moved I ran a ground going over the bar but made it out ok. Tried my safe spot but just swung in the ebb till dark. I will be out again Friday afternoon.

Hey AFK I'm great thanks for askin. Just kick the motor up and catch a wave over the bar, had that happen once, cant' seem to keep paint on my skeg. Hi Scott. The picture was probably Lucky John or JZ checking on my boat and sending me a phone pic letting me know it was still floating. Started out towards the inlet and just short of the stakes by the fish factory the prop spins on me. Start limping back in towards the marina and I get in touch with Ocean Addict who was kind enough to not only come and tow us in, but take us out on his boat for the day. Fortunetly I was able to return the favor by putting him on a spot that paid off with some nice fish for the day. We go our 4 man limit plus one which was released. 5 of them were 37 to 40 inches, largest one hitting 22 pounds.

Dave and Brian, a huge thank you for turning a bad day into an extremely enjoyable day.

On another good note, my marina was able to put a loaner prop on my boat and get back in the game for tomorrow. So back out after them in the am.

Bob, I have room tommorrow if you want to hop on my boat. Planning on getting to the boat around 7 am. Call me tonight if interested. If I don't hear from you, I will assume you have made other plans. May run up the beach in am for some jigging and then clam the outgoing tide in the inlet.

Had a friend down today who hasn't gotten out in 2 years. All he wanted was one fish for a "family feast tonight", but I was hoping to put him on steady fish all day. Tried 4 different spots, spent some time fighting some gators, and had a bite that was a slow pick at best.

9 hours of fishing. Finished the day with 4 keepers at 36", 34", 32", 30", 2 shorts, and 3 big Blues at 35", 32", 32". Those blues really put up a big fight when paired with a strong outgoing current.

The fishing was a bit slower today than it has been, but he left more than happy and with a cooler full of fish, so it was a day well spent. Back at it tomorrow am.

Has there been any word of action off of LBI on the jig? I may just run out to closer lump and take a shot at jigging in the am and if no takers, hit the inlet. If you find something give me a call and may shoot up depending on how far north you are.

Tue and/or Wed will be fine Bob. Will work out the details Sunday or Monday evening.

John, I was thinking the same thing but I think I will stay with the striped ones tomorrow. If as forecasted you should have good conditions for it. Is Wreck fish only Bob going with you?

Almost a complete skunk today. Had dad out again thinking the curse was over, but evidently not. Fished for 1 hour on the outer bar, and 1 hour on the southern bar, and caught nothing but gators. Kept 1 gator for a friend at work that loves them, and then decided to head home and get some work done. No use fighting the weekend crowds and boat traffic if the bite seems off.

Right around this date last year (11/23/08) is when the water got cold enough that the inlet bite died out for the rest of the season (for me at least), and after 2 consecutive days of "slow" fishing, I'm concerned. I still think it's warmer now than it was this date last year though. Stuck at work tomorrow, but then I'm free to fish for 9 straight days, so I really hope we're not done yet.........

Forecast looks shakey for next week, so we don't even really have Tog as a backup plan either.

I understand your fears Joe. We clammed for couple hours in a spot that's rewarded us very well all week and nothing but a blue and a spiny. So, we shot north and tried jiggin some lumps.

Well the good news is we weren't bored. The bad news is just 1 29 inch striper, versus approximately 30 of those gator blues. Nonstop action if you like blues, but we couldn't get under them to the linesides at all. Oh well, smoked blue works for me too.

What time did you start? One of the guys in my little group did have two up to 39 inches, but he was there at daybreak. I didn't get there till much later

Spent the day playing with bunker inside and watching some other barners pulling several bass out from under them while were only getting some very short hits. Wanted to go to inlet and fish my usual spot, but when wind kicked up and knowing nice bass were around, I just couldn't talk myself into heading out. So we stuck with it and finally late in the day our efforts were rewarded and the first skunk of the season was avoided. First one was only 29 inches, but next one was a fat 39 inch bass easily pushing 20+ pounds. Tomorrow is not looking fishable for me. Hoping rain moves out in time to fish most of Tuesday and Wednesday.

Absolutely wild out there today. Great Bay had 3' rollers in it (if not higher). The wind was relentless, somewhere between 30mph-40mph. Getting through the inlet was not even a thought. The whole entire scene really was a   . Got spanked all the way across the bay and set up in the mouth of the inlet at 8am.

Fished for 4 hours and had a very steady bite. No flurries, no lulls. Seemed like a bite every 15-20 minutes. Boated 11 fish at 35", 32", 32", 30", 28", 28", 28", 26", 26", 25", and 23". Lost a nice one at the boat. I'm usually pretty good at avoiding that, but between the wind, waves, current, and the way the wind kept knocking the net around, I blew it on that one. Lots of fish, but I am concerned about the size. The "bigguns" may be just about gone. Used a tag and kept 3 for dinner.

If I was the only boat out there I would not have stayed, but I was lined up with Fishhead728 and Legal Limit and it looked like everyone had a "sporting" good day.

The ride back across Great Bay was unlike any I've ever had. Got slammed with hard spray from every wave the whole way. Actually hurt my face every time I looked up. Thank god for Grundens. Back at it tomorrow am.

I wasn't planning on an early start tomorrow due to the weather anyway. So we will work out the time when you call based on what rain forecast looks like in the am. Plan on a 9:00 am meet at the boat and we will adjust from there.

We will work out the details for Wednesday tomorrow.

Went out yesterday in the wind. Worked some bunker in the back but no takers. Went out again today and did the same thing. Released a 31" and had a couple run-offs. Still beats work! Be out there in the am.

Same bat time, same bat channel as yesterday. Anchored up at about 8:30. Boated 3 fish then Ted showed up and parked right next to me. Over the next hour, I boated another 4 while Ted just watched and caught essentially nothing. I was actually starting to feel bad (well, almost ;)). I guess the fish heard him complaining about me not sharing, because then over the final 2 hours I didn't get a single bite, while he boated 4 or 5 right in front of me. Touche.

Absolutely beautiful day compared to yesterday. After 11am, It was actually pleasant. Kept a 38" and 36" for the table, and released fish at 34", 32", 30", 28", 28". Mostly smaller fish, but still a few nice ones around. Back at it in the am. May do a pm shift as well.

Your lucky I anchored next to you. I was getting ready to drop back behind you. :fighting:

Once my chunk slick started out slicking Joeys I ended up with 4 bass. One was short, one at 29, then a fat 37 incher, and the payoff fish was a nice solid 42/43 inch that might have been pushing close to or over 30 pounds.

I left as the tide turned and trolled inside a little on soem bunker marks, but no takers and called it a day.

Was supposed to have Sea Fevre on board today and tomorrow, but he finally has to work for a living.

Will be back out in the am.

Its funny how the boat being on dry dock will do that to you LOL. Word has it that the boat could possibly be sea bound by sunday:bow:
I looked at my "logbook" from 2008 and the spot you guys are fishing was on fire same time last year....

I've actually taken up chumming using older bait and all the loose "knuckles" in the new bait. Gives me something to do during lulls.

I have to get some fresh clams in the am. Hope scotts has some in the am. His site status says low. I may have to pay premium prices and Lucky John's Inlet Clam bar. eek!

Will be out in the am and out for the entire day.

Tide turned in grassy around 1:30 pm today. May just go to where I was today for incomng. Not sure about out going due to how late it will be by then. May just stay put. Will see what conditions and bite are like as the day goes on.

With the current weather forecast I would like to, but that 5 hours of fishing would be too costly on the home front. :argue:

Going out on Thursday ALL DAY LONG!

Family full of Giants fans, and no one is looking to eat until just before game time. We may lose the game, but I'm going to get a full day of fishing out of it. :D :yahooo:

We got a 34" & 36" today. We heard a boat in distress so we made a run to help out. He was fighting a 40-lb plus Striper and released the boat from his anchor ball. He was sailing to the breakers but the boat would not start. We first ran outside the bar thinking the tide was still going out and he would drift over the bar. (He got hung up on the bar). I will say that where we were at was 6'-8'. We ran back around to the inside. He now got the motor started and got off the bar. This is a great ending!

Loooooooooong day today. Fished from 8am-1pm mostly inside and a little outside. Only managed 1 fish at 29", and a few dropped bites. Almostly completely dead today.

Picked up A Frayed Knot at 1:30 and went back out to more of the same until about 4:00. A few dropped bites until 4:00, but then it was on! Only fished till 4:40 as we had a long ride back across the bay, but for 40 minutes we were running circles around the boat and each other. Great fun!

Ended the day with 5 fish from 28"-35". Back at it tomorrow am.

Day started off good and went downhill from there. First baits weren't in the water 10 minutes when rod doubles over hard and line is peeling, while I am talking to friend who was drifting into white water in Dave's post above. Boat and release fish which was solid 38 inches and around 18 pounds.

Monitored friends status with Ocean Addict and Sea Tow who I called in.

No Bites after that and started out towards outer bar to find friends anchor and ball but only got half way and saw it was too rough to venture further.

Moved to another area of inlet, and nothing. Moved again and had nice breakers just behind the boat. Quickly hooked up on a small fish that spit the hook. Then took two good waves that stayed out of boat but told me time to leave. Didn't like the conditions and moved back in to where I started. Had one other fish maybe 30 inches that again pulled free and one other bite that missed the hook. Between the conditions and lack of fish, it was a very dissappointing day. Friday does not look fishable for me, and Saturday only slightly better. Sunday looks like my last shot for 2009 on my boat.

FYI, if anyone found or finds an anchor tied to a blue anchor ball somewhere near the outer bar near the last green can in LEI, it belongs to Larry Henshaw out of Chestnut Neck boat yard. He made it back to the dock ok where they discovered his fuel line was loose and then disconnected completely just before the marina. That is why it would not start out in the inlet.

Lesson here, never come off or pull your anchor unless your motor is already running. Once a drift you are at the waters mercy.

I told you they would bite on that tide. Thanks for a good short afternoon trip full of adventure. That first fish I had on was not meant to be caught. It did almost a full 360 around the boat only to spit the hook at the net.:o
