I am sure he will rub it in real good with plenty of pictures.
For the record, the boater in distress today did have the motor running when he let the anchor go and then it stalled due to loose gas line. Just a bad set of circumstances.

That makes much more sense. Couldn't figure out how/why someone would seperate from an anchor to "chase" a fish and not have the motor running.
Glad that turned out well. Last thing any of us want is another bad incident in our inlet.

Lesson here, never come off or pull your anchor unless your motor is already running. Once a drift you are at the waters mercy.
Glad to hear he made it back ok, good tip firing up the engine before you pull anchor:thumbsup:

Had a great Thanksgiving Day bass trip. I was limited out with bass to 21.5 lbs by 7:30 this morning. I had a double header that was fun (Solo Trip) I was able to land them both but it was interesting to say the least. I left them biting and I am good graces with the wifey for being home early.

Slow day with relatively poor results. Left the dock with a friend at 6:10 and was anchored up in the "the right spot, the right tide" by 6:40. Thought it was a can't miss kind of morning.......... Watched A Frayed Knot bail double headers for an hour about 60 feet away from us, mocking me the whole time. :fighting: He actually had me call the bait shop to see what time they were open so he could weigh in the fish. :fighting: I'm not mad, but I will get even. ;)
Once he left (at like 7:30) we jumped right in his spot and immediately put a 29" in the boat. Our next present was a nice wave broadside out of nowhere the gave us a nice little wakeup call. Fished for another 2 hours in that spot and got NOTHING. NOTHING!
Left there and tried 3 more spots. Picked up 1 fish at each spot and really had to work for it today. Ended up with 4 fish at 29", 32", 32", 34", but didnt' really feel at all like we banged them up today. Certainly not enough fish for the effort. I know others did well today, so I guess it was just my turn to have an off day. Not sure if I'll be back at it tomorrow; the weather report looks pretty foul.

This coming from the guy that had 4 fish in 20 minutes. ;)
And no, I bet the boat that followed me around all day didn't get 4 fish. You have to have a line in the water to catch fish, not be idling around the entire bay/inlet all day. :naughty:
They say 10% of the people account for 90% of the fish. I wonder if 1 person/boat can account for 90% of the traffic in any given area. Is there some kind of prize for endlessly circling around for hours trying to decide where one is going to fish? :D

Stoneman, yes pulling the boat after Sunday as I now have to pay the price for taking most of November off with a 2 week business trip. Will be getting back on Saturday the 12th and then be busy with stripping the boat down and Holiday preparations so fishing time will be limited. I have free passes on the Karen Ann for a togging trip I have to sneak in as well. If I get a chance to get out with you I will let you know.

Hey Joe,if you fish enough that happens. Last week I was banging fish like mad until I took Seafevre with me. We had 3 nice keepers and three throwbacks with some big alligators, but I felt like I should have been flogged that day.
Seems like that happens in "that" area sometimes, boat is very close to you banging fish and you are banging your head............
Looks like tom is looking like a blow out :(

Will be out all day Sunday, just debating on game plans:
Anchor/clam morning outgoing then go jigging
Anchor/clam morning outgoing then go togging
Tog in am and then go jigging
I would try to do all three but not sure there is enough time.

Had Channel Bass and another friend aboard for the first trolling trip. I had enough clam smegma on my deck for the year!
Typical areas held fish in 20-30 ft. With the S.W. winds the Northern troll had the fish biting as no other direction led to hook-ups.
We had our 3 man limit by 10:30 up to 31" with about 17ish stripes total. Mixed in were many large blues.
Best part of the day is having my friend drive home and making it past philly before the eagles let out!:)
Anxiously awaiting Lucky John's report from last night. :D

11-29-2009, 05:39 PM
Off day. Had dad out again, and we wanted to bang up on the Tog in the am, and then hit some Stripers in the inlet in the pm. Knowing the wind was supposed to kick up late am, we opted to stay pretty close to the inlet and try a local wreck. Plenty of Tog on it, but they were all small - not one keeper in the bunch. Boated (and released) about 40 Tog and a few small Sea Bass.
Ocean started kicking up a little around 11am, so we head to the inlet and picked a spot. 3 hours - 2 bites - landed a 30" and fat 38", but that was it.
Can't complain since we did get to bring home some fish, but I was hoping for better. Hearing a nearby boat chant "The good guys have 7 Joey!!!" didn't help either. :fighting::fighting:
All in all a nice day, especially for this late in the year. Hard to beat spending time with dad, so I'll take it. Back at it tomorrow am.

we ran out around 530 and got setup early in the spot that has been producing well for us lately and even though the bar never really got going we managed to pull two fish out. put in some more time before we decided to run over to a nice unoccupied rip on the north side and we were able to pull two more fish there before heading in. fish were 29'-35", hope the weather hangs on and we are able to take advantage of this stellar fishing a little while longer. i must say we are very pleased with fishing the south end so far.

Started out jigging and trolling out front, trolled spots from the inlet all the way north of Brant Beach....nothing but a couple of blues a crappy ride back. Not great for us today out front, but always good to be on the water:thumbsup:. We ended the day with 2 fish from the inlet 1 35" and a fattt 36" fish.

Picked 2 keepers (33 37 inches)and two shorts (one lost) on outgoing tide. Ran up the beach only to find it too sloppy and sporadic marks. Moved back to inlet for incoming and picked two shorts on north side and lots of grass. Moved to my favorite spot when tide is up and quickly boated a double header (38 and 36 inches) and then finished the day and 2009 season with a fat 36 inched fish at sunset.
Frayed Knot, Lucky John, Joey Zac, Irish Jig, Drop Off it was a pleasure hanging out at the bar all November with each of you. Lucky John, Drop Off, Sea Fevre, Ocean Addict, and Stoneman, it was also a pleasure actually fishing with you this season.

All that west we had, had the inlet looking like a lake, so we decided to run north and try some more jigging since we had a decent day playing that game on Wednesday. Unfortunately yesterday wasn't our day. We saw very few quality marks on the Brant lumps, but gave it a shot. Nothing. Okay, so we moved down to the Beach haven slough. More scattered marks. That wasn't gettin it. We slugged out several drifts, with the only action being my son foul hooking a monster skate.
The trollers were doing "okay" and the boyz clammin the inlet were boxin fish, but we struck out on the jig. Oh well, back to shuckin clam for this week.

Headed out again with dad and wailed out the inlet and headed north...looking back into the wind and building seas, I pulled back on the throttle considering the potential for a long ugly ride back to the inlet. Started with the big blues right away not 1 mile from the inlet. Worked the area in and out north to about 1/2 way between the green and red towers. Hooked into a nice 30" bass on a panther-martin 9-shad rig in about 25' of water. Worked our way back south and picked another bass on the panther-martin shad rig. Put a litoral society tag in a nice fat 25 incher and let her go. Ended the day with 6 big blues and 2 bass. Not a bad day and only burned 10 gallons of gas...nice weather and caught some fish with dad = great day!

Finally got a chance to get out a neighbor who I've been unable to synch plans with all month. Called his cell at 7:15 and woke him up; at 7:30 we left the dock - Perfect!
Tried a couple of reliable spots and 1 new one, and while the bite wasn't hot and heavy, there are some fish still around. Managed 5 keepers at 38", 36", 30", 29", 28", and 4 shorts. He was suffering from sea sickness the whole time, so we couldn't really hang out on the bars like I really wanted to. 4 hours - 9 fish - no complaints here.
Back out tomorrow am. It's not over yet!!!! :yahooo::cheers:

If I had gone to that spot first I would have had a 20-30 bass day. I made a move to the other side when the tide turned a little more and left them biting and ran out of bait.
This was my last trip for 2009,pulling the hook and going to finish getting ready for Panama. I will give you guys some pictures in the offshore forum if my new laptop works down there.

John I wanted to. I knew that we had finally found the right spot, but the neighbor I was with was puking every 5 minutes. He was hanging tough and not complaining, but I could tell he was dying. I could also see that the waves hitting the back of the boat were making him a little nervous. He's a good guy, and that fact that he wasn't complaining really made me want to get him to a location where he could actually enjoy the fishing, so I had to go inside, even though I knew the fish were out by you. It's all good though, he had a good day and caught some fish, so, mission accomplished.
And yes, pics from Panama are EXPECTED at this point. We want colorful, exciting pics of Panama's best catches.
You can throw in some fish pics too. ;)

Mumbled something about "fishing every day is ridiculous" and "get a life", or something like that.  No need trying to get back into her good graces while there are still fish around. Joe, (and others that run past hatfield to great bay)
Tried to hail you this afternoon around 3:30, but didn't get through to you. I found That "floating thing" you found at the mouth of the hatfield creek a few weeks ago but it's moved east, just past the Coast guard station, and closer to the bank. Wanted to give you a heads up for your way back, although chances are good it's too close to shore to be a bother. (for now)
I hope it sinks where it's at. The tide was out big and just about 1 foot of it was exposed, still bobbing up and down like one end was stuck in the mud.

Fantastic day. Not much quantity, but the inlet provided QUALITY!
Took out a neighbor (Art) who I was finally able to synch schedules with, and was able to get him on some fish. Only boated 5 fish, but they were 29", 36", 38", 41", and a personal best 47" 36.5lbs!
The big one was so barely hooked that I had to include a pic of it. Can't believe the fish stayed on the line, but we landed her. Also included pics showing the 47" and 41" together, and all 5 with the 29" to add some scope for how big the bigger ones were.
Absolutely beautiful weather for Dec 2nd, finally in the 30lb club, and was able to get another neighbor out fishing. I'll add Art's pic when I get my hands on his camera. Can't believe there are still big fish like this around. :yahooo:
It's not over yet!!! I may not be able to get out tomorrow (forecast is gnarly), but I'll be back at it Friday am. Catch'em up!!!!

Hey guys we were in the whitewater yesterday on the south side on the outgoing and scored a 36". During incoming we shot out to about 30ft and jigged landing a 33" and a 32" and a 12lb slammer blue. Then we moved to the north and landed another 32".
Today we stayed south all day and landed a 36" a 34" and a 33". Awesome fishing on both days and we couldnt have asked for better.

The 47" was caught on a live Peanut Bunker (yes, they are STILL alive in my pen - 2 months now).
The 41" was caught on a chunk of fresh Bunker.
Everything else was caught on fresh clam.

Joe good job on the fish. Bogan said your rod will be ready in another 2 days or so. I did order another rod while I was up there and it will be ready in two weeks,so if you don't need that stick I can pick yours up when I go for mine.

What a complete and total RIP OFF!!!!
Seeing yesterday's forecast for 45mph today, I decided yesterday afternoon to take today off. Seemed like the only "safe" thing to do. I mention it to my parents yesterday and lo and behold just like that my wife shows back up last night with the kids. That seemed great, evidently she's willing to talk to me again, and I get to see the kids. Went to bed happy.
Wake up today to find out that the weater is fine. FINE!!!!!! I should be leaving the dock in a scramble right now, but nooooooooooooo, now that I let it out that today was a planned off day, looks like I'll be spending the day with the wife and kids doing the whole Costco/Walmart/Target/etc thing.
No way out of this now. The striped ones get a break today. May have to think twice about pulling the boat on Saturday. This will need to be avenged somehow.
Sorry everyone.......... no pics today. :(

Nice job with the bass Joe. Why even consider pulling now?
Last 2 years I stayed in till Christmas and didn't do much fishing the last few weeks of Dec waiting for the nicer days. Wound up pulling and power washing in freezing cold, promised myself I wouldn't do it this year. Wife and dad are all over me to pull, but I want to stay in till the stripers are GONE, so we'll see how it goes.
It was starting to look like I was going to get bullied into puling on Saturday, but with today's "off day", I may be able to work the "I got ripped off" angle to get another week.

OK Joey I know you and your wife were fishign this afternoon. Where is the report. I hope she didn't push you overboard.;)
Well I finally caught some fish in the whitewater!! Nothing to write home about but out of 5 stripers, two made it into the box, 29" and a 31". Got them both just after slack tide in the morning. One ate a bunker head and the other was on clam. Hd to move the boat a bunch of times before I found where they were.

Strange sorta day for me.
It was soooo gorgeous, I figured it would be perfect for running out LEI and up to the lumps. All the way there my screen is literally blacked out with fish. I get to the lumps, the marks are perfect, and I start jigging. First fish, 26 inches. Second fish, 26 inches. Third fish 26 inches. Hmmm.
so, I slap on the stretch 25's and start a troll. Boom, monster bluefish. Boom, another. Boom another. Hmmm. So, stop and try jigging again. 26inches. Then 25, then 26 again. This wasn't working.
I put the stretches out again, and boom, big bluefish.
The take away was 12 stripers, 11 at 26, 1 at 25. 7 bluefish.
Sort of an odd feeling coming home, after enjoying that beautiful day, the ocean like a mill pond and yet nothing in the box (except a couple blues)
But that all said, it was one of the single most beautiful Dec days I can remember. I hope you guys all "caught em up"

It was a pleasure having Sea Fevre aboard today although the feeling may not be mutual since we only trolled up 1 striper at 26" and a big gator! :)
Bob noticed immediately how dirty the water was. Trolled the same areas as Sun. Decent marks, trolled all directions; I guess they couldn't see.
They surely can smell since clams led to hook -ups in the inlet. December 4th, go figure. Of course that was our plan if trolling was off but I didn't get clams like a jerk since this time of year (like Sun) we usually crush them. Good job Channel Bass; sticks to the plan and limits out.
Lesson learned.
Again, nice fishing with you Bob.

Two shifts today. Fished from 8am-Noon by myself. Brought home my two at 29" and 32". Released a 27" and 26", lost a nice 36" (roughly) at the boat due to net "issues", and had 4 or 5 Spiney Dogs. All Bass on bunker; all dogs on clam. All bass caught right at the high tide slack.
Headed back in to pick up my dad, who drove down this morning after work, only to find my wife standing at the dock. Last night she starts talking to me again, and now she wants to go fishing?  OK, looks like Poppy gets the kids, and off we went. Managed to get her her two fish; a 29" and 34". Both fish were "fiesty", so I'm glad she got to experience a nice little bite. Ironically, both fish came right at the low tide slack. All fish on slack tide, and nothing while the tide was moving?
Left at 4:30 and enjoyed an amazingly calm ride across a flat bay. Cannot believe the weather (and fishing!!!) we are enjoying this late in the season.
Going to make an attempt at tomorrow am, but the weather report looks kind of gnarly. We'll make that decision when we wake up tomorrow and take a look outside. Hoping for the best.

We probably should have started drinking.. that might have changed our luck today LOL. Radio was quite all morning for the " trollers N jiggers" but by afternoon some found "old faithful" still works. I wanted to head up the beach also to see if the birds were working and there is nothing like reeling in fish on the jig.

Yep that was me. I thought it was you just off from me, but then I think I confused things as I said I was just west of you, which was bass akwards (sorry, brain fart) as I was just east of you. In fact, I saw you pull in that first blue, we weren't but 300 yards apart.
It was kind of odd as you said. the bottom was paved with fish. Jigging with Ava's got me a handful of rats, but towing the 25's only got me blues. I was there since 7 am, so I headed in around 12:30, and I guess shortly after things picked up a bit. (figures)
Was going to try for this am with clam, but decided against as my honeydo list is 6 miles long, and the weather isn't great. So, I'll knock out honey do's and hit it again Monday.

Even though I knew better, I headed out today at 8am. Ice on the car, ice on the dock, ice on the boat, here we go. Had a neighbor with me that was dying to go, and I couldn't bring myself to call it off. As soon as I saw the water temp on my depth finder (8 degrees less than Friday), I knew we were done.
Worked our way across the bay to the inlet, which was a mess, tried a couple of spots, and caught nothing but wind, cold, and some water in the boat. Useless. This could be the cold snap that slams the door shut on the inlet bite.
There were some others out there that stuck it out. Hopefully they fare better than I did. Back at it tomorrow am, hoping for the best.

Next one 15 minutes later and threw that one back. Wind against tide became a bit much so headed out front even though the temps in the back are still awesome 49-50 degrees. Managed a few small ones on the troll. Just a heads up guys... the water out front is DIRTY and the troll is lame... dont waste the gas if u dont have to. The bite is still on in the bay.

Brought Sea Fox out today to troll. Hit my favorite lump lines again since the water had cleaned up nicely since Friday's troll with Sea Fevre. Had a steady pick from the 1st drop.
Ended up with 13 stripes and 2 blues (kept them for the mother-in-law;)) with 10 rats coming up on a tube umbrella from 24" - 26" and 3 keepers on the shad umbrella from 29" - 35". Yes Channel Bass, your creation caught more than mine! (again)

Tried for 3 hours today out in the inlet on the incoming. Used live Peanuts, Bunker chunks, clam, and a live Porgy. 2 Skates (both on clam) and NOTHING else. NOTHING! :(
Stuck at work for the next 3 days, and unless the bite turns back on, the boat is getting pulled Saturday. I'll still get a few Tog trips in between now and mid-January, but I have a bad feeling that all that snow/ice on Saturday was bad news.
Without question there will still be a good troll/jig bite for another month, but the inlet clam/bunker bite? Yikes. We may be done.

Always a pleasure Rick...didn't think we were going to make it out with that blow out tide:thumbsdown:, but we did and had a great few hours on the water to close the season. We had a great season fishing on the Irish Jig and the Dominator(soon to be re-named Irish Jig 2 ) and we are already looking forward to fishing with all of my new and old Barn friends next season.
We should all try to get together and hit a head boat or two this year.

Well, as an initial idea I would suggest Saturday, January 24th. Saturday I would think allows the most people to go, and there are 2 NFL playoff games on Saturday the 10th and 17th.
Anyone have a suggestion for a boat? Which inlet?

Thanks for the reports yesterday Channel Bass and Fevre, regretably I also trolled nadda today. Had 1.5 hrs to find them, but my normal lump lines didnt hold any.:(
What I did find was an ok sea, dirty water, a rare mark here and there, and a birdless ocean! This fall was very different from the past few. I cant remember the inlet producing bigger stripes so late in the season and so few bass on the troll and jigging.
That's it for me, made the call to yank her.
It was a pleasure speaking, fishing and having some cocktails with some of you guys.
Have a great Holiday everyone.
Cheers:cheers:

john... no birdplay was the most discouraging part about Dec for me. I normally dont jig unless I am surrounded by birds. I will troll the lumps and 40-50 foot depths without birds but the water this fall is filthy. I spent a small fortune on stretchs this year and was excited to try them all out and never got the chance to have them chomped on. I looked at my 2008 logbook and found that on this day last year I had 50 stripers with 12-16 lb fish all on the jig north of the towerlump. Whatever..... time to concentrate on work and my home maintenance... sorry to hear u didnt get em today

Bob,
I found the birds!
They are all up and down the Schuylkill river and shopping center parking lots North West of Philadelphia.:D
Not sure if the bass are under them though........too many shoppers beeping at me when I try to throw a jig out of my window.
