Working 4-12 tomorrow gonna give it a shot out front. Anyone seeing any action out there?
I'm not looking for numbers or your favorite spots, just trying to get the skunk off my boat, without keeping OPEC in business.
Last 3 times I've been out it's been blowing to beat the band !!!
Any bird play or fish out front?
2 weeks ago we had 10-15lb blues off AC in 50-60 feet but no stripers.:please:
I'll be on 68 (C-Phase) If you holler and I'm on the fish I'll get back to you.

i only wish we did as good ad Mike Brennan and Sonny Conover on the Willy Savage Striper Team boat because they had these two fish in the inlet and in front of Brigantine.

Hey thanks man.
Dang, I had to work today..... It looked much nicer then yesterday too:(
I crossed over the Brigantine bridge 3-4 times today on calls and there must have been 20-30 boats at any given time in the inlet. When coming out of Brig later in the day they were hanging bass on the scales at Rip tide & another B&T shop while snapping pictures. Guess the bite is lighting up
Nice catch and thanks for the call, just sorry I wasn't able to answer .....

Was out today in the inlet and had 2. One 35...19lbs another 32...13lbs. Top of the out going tide worked and I saw others pulling them in too. Was drifting eeels. It was nice to finally catch some good size fish, or any fish at all for that matter. They are there go get them. Man it was a beautiful day too!

bdubbs good job. What did the bass hit on. Were the umbrellas shad or eel rigs?
bdubbs
11-05-2009, 10:12 PM
chartruse shad umbrella
and dropped a live spot down as well at one point, both worked...
lotta bluefish though so be prepared for biteoff's even tryed dragging a dead eel as a trailer on the umb. after a blue bit my shad off... that resulted in half an eel 5 mins later... interesting side note. my other line i was trolling was a mann's bunker intimidator. and didnt get a touch on that, not even from a bluefish....
ill probably be out there tommorw moring for a lil wind permitting. hit me up

Blacking out the background is pretty funny.
Do you really think that was necessary.
Theres fish from the inlet out 10 miles from Sandy Hook to Cape May
So if the Ferris Wheel or Flanders were in the background I still doubt you will be burning YOUR spot.

Tryed jigging and drifting various locations from the cuma lumps to SIC area. Nothing happening. Marked bait fish on the finder at all depths. And Saw bait fish splashing on the surface heading towards the beach. Amazing that nothing was chasing the school. Tryed trolling near Corsons where I Saw some bird play but got nothing. I here chatter on the radio others in the area were catching some bigs blues and limited stripers. Water was 58 degrees. Nice day very little wind and calm waters. Ended up with throw back flounder, numerous spiny dogs and one Blackfish. It was great to get a break from work to enjoy the day :)

managed one 36 incher today on the troll. had a double hook up apparently but the other one broke off my trailer line on the umbrella. (didnt even notice till i was about to set it back out and i was missing my trailer)
took a local kid from town out today, he was stoked, i popped the drag in gear and handed it over to him to reel in, biggest fish he ever caught.:D
otherwise it was a slow day overall... dam parking lot in the inlet. and even trolling on my way back in at one point there was 5 other boats stacked up next to me all trolling which made it hard to troll the track i wanted.
gotta love the weekend warriors, monday will bee here soon enough:razz:

Had two yesterday, a double header in the parking lot(inlet). Actually it was after it started blowing and alot of people had cleared out. They were 29( my buddies first striper ) and one just over 28 for me that I threw back to swim another day. First part of the day was nice second half wind kicked up and the drift was all over the place.

tryed drifting the inlet rips with live spot for a lil w/ not even a touch...
worked my way north then about an hour into trolling without a touch, i spotted some small birds pecking away at the surface in the distance...
i pull up and see sandeels on the surface. tryed jigging and even dropped a spot down and not a touch. was marking balls of bait and lots of fish on the screen.
so i decided to get back on the troll and work around the edge of the sand eels; managed to pull a 21lber out of it. but just as quick the bait dissapeared and the birds flew away..
still such a nice day on the water anyway.
im not used to fishing in November in just a teeshirt.:D
found one whole finger mullet and a crab in theh fishes stomach

You did better then us.
My buddy and I fished HARD today starting out at 0700
Pulled eel's and spot for 2 hours on an incoming tide in Absecon inlet..... Nothing.
Guy told me they had them up the coast 24 miles yesterday, We ran fished it for 3 hours, and nothing
Saw the gannets here and there, but not lighting it up.
Get back to GE inlet and fished until 2:30 nothing
Get home and heard they had them 2 miles beyond where we stopped ALL DAY LONG at 24 miles, 2 more miles and it could have been great....
Get home and eating dinner and a guy at work sends me a text message and photo of a 45 pounder he bagged in the inlet we started out at this morning. The guy never fished before and just bought a rod a K-mart this afternoon
Good news is I'm still off for 2 more days, bad news is wed it's supposed to blow .......

thinking about running way out and poking around tommorw for a lil C&R. i havent heard much from out there in weeks.
i found that fish around a school of sandeels.. if it wasnt glassy i would have never seen them just sorta waking water on the surface. but like i said for all the 100's of fish i marked, n everything i threw at them they just wouldnt eat. i guess that one was just extra hungry

Was out in the Absecon inlet also yesterday. Had one hit right right near Gardners basin, and it came off. Only saw 2 fish netted that morning. Fished inlet from 10am till 12. Went out front and trolled for like an hour. Nothing. Couldn't believe how calm it was. Came back in to inlet around 1pm till 3:30. Nothing again. Many snags. Got boarded by Coastgaurd, and called it a day.

beautiful day today, started on the troll a lil ways north , managed a nice run off that came unbuttoned then a few mins. later put a 37iner in the box...
got a call that a spot about 20 miles north of my position was catchin so ran up that way. apparently i missed it by the time i got there all we found was blues blues blues... jigged and trolled for a lil with nothing major to show....
started heading back in the sheet glass ocean saw some spashes so i stopped, turned off the engines and next thing i know for a far as i could see in every direction was peanuts skipping the surface... but NOTHING UNDER THEM believe me i waited thinking it would open up, and threw everything i had... NOTHING...
well now that i found out where ocean citys peanut population was hiding all fall, i motored back down to AC for the setting sun, grabbed some food then tryed drifting the absecon inlet... NOT A TOUCH, so i headed back out front drove slow to see if i could mark much didnt see ne thing.. then tryed GE rips on the way in with live spot NOT A TOUCH  long day... fished sunrise to sunset basically. beautiful day on the water..
final count; 1- 37in bass over half a dozen blues, 70 gallon gas bill :o
looks like a good storms coming... time to surf

Was behind the bridge Sunday morning fishing a drop off near the creek with clams. Had three runoffs, got two to the boat, one keeper. It was a slow steady pick all morning, but I saw at least 5 keeper fish caught within 100 yards of me. It was nice to get out after that mess on Friday and Saturday. BTW - I saw a lot of damage to the docks and a fair amount of debris in the water....watch your props.

ended up on plan B drifting eels in the bay... managed 1 40-42"er around 22-26lbs thought ide hooked into a cownose w/ the way she pulled line.. 10 mins later got her to the boat... snapped this quick photo then tryed to release her but she just wouldnt revive, so in the box she went... must have gotten lucky b/c that was the only fish the whole morning...

ok rodg. i went out yesterday tryed going out front once again for a lil not as bad 3-5ft rollers mixed with some windchop... trolled up two blues and lost what we think was a bass... really hard fishing still as whenever we would hook up ide have to keep work hard to keep the bow into the waves , and try to net a fish all at the same time..positive thing tho is there was lotsa diving gannets, and marking a ton of fish and bait..ended up drifting eels in the back...had one hit and run and that was it.... ill be back at it today. out front looks more dooable...

trolled streches just outside on sat(south), started early in 30'-40' of water nothing hit. moved a little in to 25'- 28' just deep enough to keep them off the bottom at low speed and first striper hit (short 27") soon after we couldn't keep the blues off .Some up to 20 lbs. then managed to pick out a striper to keep @ 35":). Blues kept two streches for souveniers.(ouch)
The ratio was 10% stripers to blues but alot of action. water temp @ 56 degree. this cold snap should lower the temp just enough and it should be red hot. Hope the conditions are good when the blues are gone.

Yes to both. I was near you for a bit yesterday. 26 Scout cc.
Couldn't buy a bite on the stretchs yesterday, but got em 2-3 at a time on the 9rs umbrellas.
I think the umbrellas track predictably well, but it's the stretchs that cause the lines to foul. Those things do what they want to do. I have run two of the same stretches out of out rodders on identical 8 foot trolling sticks giving at least a 22 foot spread still get fouled on each other.

Most fun we had yesterday was to abruptly pick up and run away from a fleet like we knew somethin"( we didn't). 2 minutes later we would have 4-5 boats following us. Some would come screaming past us on almost a collision course to get to"spot" first. Spot would be a handful of gannets.

I had heard of a bite off Briigantine so that was the early plan, but really did not want to get beat up on the way home so I just slid out to 50' and dropped a couple stretches... monster bluefish are still lurking....
Pretty slow but steady pick for a couple hours before I had to hightail it back to the dock to show up for the meeting (late, of course)
Battened down the hatches for yet ANOTHER big blow..... maybe Friday will be do-able if this low keeps moving at doubetime.....

Not a whole lot of trips this year but all have produced. Went out front of OC this morning and saw nothing. Made a few feeble attempts to jig up some fish but very few birds around and no luck. Hit the GE bars for the start of the outgoing and water was filty. Covered up in dogs. Had about 10 in 30 min and other boats I saw also were fighting the same. We were using clam and bunker. Made a move tighter to the OC side and got out of the dogs but also didn't have any other takers. Didn't hear much in the way of boats catching today.

Yesterday morning had all the promise in the world with nice flat seas and a forecast of S winds at 5kts..... yeah, right.
Anyway, headed out towards the usual stomping grounds and found some good marks... and a bunker boat.... so it was off to jigging. Even with pretty good visuals on the screen I was not hooking up so I tried swimming the jig instead of just jiggin it... it was the ticket.
Had 12 bass mostly just under keeper size in about an hour, and only a couple big blues... and then it just died off enough for me to move. Went a little further offshore and found some more marks but no go on the pickup so I headed into the SI Lump. There were some boat picking on the troll so I gave it a while with some Stretch 30's.... picked one short, and then headed back to Margate.
I guess the general consensus is that noneof us can understand why the world is just not on fire right now. The water temp is perfect for fall mayhem and there sure is no shortage of bait in the water.

Hey Capt. Ed,
I was out there on Monday....I tried everything from Kennedy Park out to 2 miles. Bunker chunks and clams on fish finders and unbrella shad trolling at 3-5 mph. I didn't even get a nibble. It really seems like there is a lack of sea life around GE. I even heard the charter boat off OC asking for help last week. A couple of folks in this thread have noticed a lack of bait fish in this area, but you say there's no lack of bait. I have an older Fishfinder 160 and see a few marks here but no bait schools. Sorry if I seem negative, but I'm just trying to figure out why I've only caught 3 blues and a couple of spinys in 7 or 8 trips this fall. I'm really hoping that the fish are on there way down from the falling water temps to the North.
I'll be out there on Monday again....weather looks good.

Hey Bill... I want to meet you over at the dock, when you going to be around this week?
As far as not finding the bait, I have not been having too much problem there, it is finding bait with something other than dogfish on it all over the bottom.... I honestly have not been fishing our inlet at all, so there very well may be a shortage in that zone... still seeing lots of gannets without gulls off the beaches of S.I. and O.C. when I am out, but can't seem to be able to find a concentration of fish on them enough to jig or topwater them and I honestly don't like trolling... get plenty of that routine during tuna season.
Did have a good time Monday though... I had a couple guys back out on me at the last minute and was flying solo the other day and it really is nice to have company out there, even if they are not on your boat.... bassbarn rules for that for sure.
It is always nice to see the Coast Guard out there when you are flying solo too....

We ran down to the Cuma lumps this afternoon and trolled niners for a couple hours. We picked up a 30" and a 26". It ain't great but I had to get those last licks in before I pull out for the season.

Yeah, but it's not good. Left Absecon Inlet at 6:15 this morning heading north looking for birds. Went half way up LBI without seeing a single bird diving on bait. Turned around and came home after trolling for half and hour with 9ers without a touch. This is the worst year I can remember for the jig bite.

Inlet bite was still on as of yesterday's incoming tide. 3 fish to 38" and 47-48 degree cleanish water. Another boat fishing the south bar had a couple too. My best day of the season was dec 8, i don't think it is over.

Not trying to bust your chops at all but I just dont get why guys get so obsessed with bird watching...its like if they dont see birds they wont fish:nuts:
Sure huge bird plays make it easy, but, fish are there regardless of the birds.

Obviously you've never been on a jig bite where hundreds of gannets are crashing from the air, while the bass are pushing the bait to the surface from below. It's a sight and adrenaline rush that doesn't quite match any other type of bass fishing, and when you find that - you have found a gold mine of fish on every drop of the jig. For me, it's the most exciting type of bass fishing.

I'm with KeysKid.
Just because you don't see birds doesn't mean the fish aren't there, you just have to put your time in and find the fish yourself.
Pulling lures for a half hour and saying it's the worse year ever, is not much time, and at 3 knots not covering much area.
But you are correct, having the birds point you to the fish, dropping down and feeling the pick up is some cool $hit, and makes for an easy find
Looks like I might be able to give it one last shot tomorrow, before I take her out for the year.

Started out today at the Cuma. Passed Kingfish heading north towards AC. Not a good sign :D Got him on the radio and he saw nothing there. Since I just arrived we tried our lures with no birds or marks.
Heard the chatter about guys boxing fish in 45' of water off the Hilton. Stayed at the Cuma for another 30 minutes and heading towards the Hilton.
Ran over some HUGE marks about a mile short of the fleet so we set out from there. Got about a half mile away and had one hit and never really hooked into the fish.
Stayed on the troll for about 2 hours not a touch. No bird play, but it was some of the best conditions you could ask for.
Lots of marks as well.
Must work tomorrow and the weather is going to take a dump (or so they say )

I agree 100%. Have been in bites like that more times than I can count from the boat or the beach. It makes for "no-brainer" fishing and is a blast. However if I step on the beach or break the inlet and dont find that, all is not lost... I just gotta work a bit harder fishing the structure...lumps, shoals, sloughs etc...the fish will be there.

Bazzillions of marks on the incoming tide at the rips off the jetty. Used clam on fish finder, trolled the umbrellad shad rig and tried jigging. I either had a snag or a monster fish tore my budget Penn a new you know what. Is that what they call a run off? Seemed like way more line was coming off than a the drift speed could have pulled off.

I'm pretty sure that was early December 1998. I've never seen birds that thick, it literally looked like a big storm cloud until you got close and realized it was miles upon miles of birds over bass. That was the year I was introduced to the crippled herring. That lure outfished everything else by a wide margin that year.

I remember that too. Sky just black with birds for miles. I was in barnegat light back then. The water was a froth with fish , like half of the entire stock of fish were coming down the coast at once. Crippled herring and big bucktails. We used to land some monster weakfish from those schools too. It was really something to see. Many days we were the only ones out there. Other days , maybe a boat or two that we knew. Not many people knew about it at the time. We'd see people trolling for bass a mile or two away and they wouldn't even react.

I remember surf fishing in the 70's if I needed some more clam I just reached down into the sand and pulled one out. I don't know if it means anything, but this year I've seen a lot of quarter to silver dollar sized clams on the sand bars that were not there the last few years.

I remember plenty of fat trout and depending on what flock you could catch bass, blues, trout, albies and even fluke what a fall. You never had to run more than 10 miles north or south of GE (inside of 3 miles) and it was an all out blitz for hours. I remeber running home from Brigantine after catching all day long and driving past flocks of birds that were insane (and we didnt even stop:eek:).

I think you're right, backed-up by Shore Catch's reports from Sat & Sun. out of Pt. Pleasant. Now if the water temp doesn't plunge, they should pass us close enough to get us on a consistant bite on a jig or if the schools of bunker keep pushing the beach, who knows?

I've been told by some old timers (around GE) that December and January have always been their best months. The guys in the Whitewater Bassin' thread (Barnegat) have been slaying them, but now the water's too cold and the bass are heading South. My friends have been catching as many as they want in Cape May and Delaware Bay, but now they're saying (in the Delaware Bay Forum) that "the nail's in the coffin" and "the season's officially over". Which one is it? I have noticed that it seems like everyone who has pulled their boat says the season's over.

Friday afternoon before the storm was EPIC. The small fleet that was out there left one by one and we ended up pretty much alone. Final tally was 23 fish to 25lbs in 3 hours. Many other fish in the high teens & 20's. Bill W. went home with sore arms since he accounted for 22 out of the 23 fish. We're hoping to get back on them later this week if weather allows.

I guess I will run it one day this week and then drop her in Somers Point. Probably Tuesday since the wind should drop a little by then...

It's been pretty quiet out there Ed. Bass have seemed to move on - blackfishing is OK but it's getting pretty chilly time to move to deeper water.
Im basically done up here until the spring. I will be chasing Sails down in Stuart right after new years! Bite is ON!
Shoot me an email with your mailing address. We will soon be working on getting 2010 leases out in the mail.
Happy new year!

Anyone been through the inlet lately? Whats up with the dredge?
bdubbs
01-20-2010, 09:13 AM
the dredge broke again thats why they pulled it back into the inside of the inlet
they have hardly pumped any sand yet so i doubt they have made the inlet any deeper. we only have one block worth of new sand on the beach now. and that last blow washed alot of that back out.

Does anyone know whether they are actually dredging the inlet itself? a friend says they use a "borrow area" just outside on the south side of the inlet and insists that the inlet is not being dredged as this will require a different permit. I am curious as I fish out of GE and the outside north bar is hairy. I would think the inlet is being dredged, but does anyone know this for a fact?

I ran my boat over to Somers Point last week to have Cardinal Joe take it out and they were working on the shoal North of the channel, but fairly close to it....
Can't imagine that they would dredge the channel, which is deep enough, when there is so much sand on the shoals on both sides and it's the shoals moving ointo the channel that causes issues...
Wish someone would slip them a 20 and point them at the rockpile ;)
Anyway.... a broken dredge gathers no sand....

Well they can't make it any worse. You would THINK they would try to kill two birds with one stone but who knows.
I know one thing, you'll be able to walk around Ocean rockpile in Longport at low tide this Summer.
Damn shame striper game over, Ocean been looking pretty good last few days.

Be careful if you use the cut, there is a slew about 50-75- yards out about 50 yards wide. After that another bar. Would hate to see anyone tear up there boat.
In this pic you can see the outer bar.

Here you can see how far out the bar stick towards the inlet.(Upper left side of photo) Sorry, only had a cell phone camera, best I could do
