Fished the flats for the last time this season and had the most interesting thing happen while fishing. We were in a thick scool of Bluefish when a Dolphin appeared chasing the fish on my line. When I boated the fish the Dolphin looked up at me and wanted us to feed him. I never in all my years of fishing fed a Dolphin till this encounter. He would come right up to me and get so close he would of taken the fish from my hand if I let him. tongue.gif I'd release the fish inches away form him and he'd hold it in his mouth and shake his head at me then swallow it. I fed this sweet and loving Dolphin four fish and could have petted it if I wanted. Has anyone else ever had this experience? I took pictures of it but my camera is a cheapy ditigal but you can make it out fairly well.
Taking the Mrs. to An island today for the last boat ride on the gulf today and will put the boat away Friday and prepare to make the journey north on Tuesday. What a wonderfull winter we had and the Dolphin seemed to say goodbye to me yesterday. See you all soon. Johnny D.

JD,
great story. The dolphin probably heard of your reputation and expected you to feed him "Italian
Bluefish". A little galic, olive oil, gravy? :D Time get get north pal, where the most of the mamals aren't as friendly ;) Bass Barners excluded, of course smile.gif

Dolphin are well known for that in Florida and it's not always a good thing. They often hang around boats trying to fish a wreck, they then eat any of the short or endangered fish that get released.

Never got to hand feed them but when I lifeguarded at Surf City LBI I often swam out and played with them.
One morning I was riding a paddleboard in on a wave a nd two dolphins dropped in on me - it was sweet!
They dont seem that big till you are in the water with them. Thank god they are peaceful. What great creatures!

A friend of ours was fishing the Bay a couple of years ago and had I come up alongside the boat and they fed it green crabs and it let them pet it.

Wasnt there some news, oh maybe a year or so ago about a dolphin off the coast of England that was trying to hump human females?

Dolphins are a wild animal, and should be treated as such. As beautiful, graceful and friendly as they seem, they could hurt or kill you in an instant. Be careful. HAPPY DAYS.

Hey Johnny, great story and a nice ending to your winter days in Florida. ;) Thanks for the e-mail & the pic.
Here is the pic JD sent me of the Dolphin. It's not very sharp, but you can see the fish in it's mouth. :D

Lew, Thanks for the post, and picture of the Dolphin. Took my Wife to an Island five miles offshore called Three Rooker Bar and spent our last day walking the beach gathering shells and sand dollars. Also swam but there are lots of shark sighings around the Island... Air tempature was 80 degrees and water was 73. I wish all of you can see this special place we visit as it is spectacular to witness.
Im sad to leave but look forward to many day's on the Chloe May fishing with my Bassbarn friends.
