Got a dozen clams from a friend that he dug and then froze shortly thereafter. Want to use them in surf but don't know whether to use them as is or prepare them somehow ahead of time(shuck and salt, etc.)

I would have shucked them and salted them prior to freezing.
You mean he froze them in the shell? I never heard of doing that but maybe the shell would work like an insulator and keep the meat fresher during the freezing process...who knows?
Let us know if they work.

If you want my opinion, which you dont. I think Bunker has been a hotter bait.

Let me know how they are.....never heard of doing that before. I usually shuck em and put them in a container with the juice, {shuck em over the container}. Add a little kosher salt. Shake up a bit and freeze. But fresh is best!

I would have to think those clams wouldn't be worth a damn unless of course they were frozen in sea water. Just my 2 cents.

They will probably be really soft when they thaw out, make sure you have the string to tie them on.
When I shuck and salt my left over liveys, I throw them in a big zip lock bag shake it up and massage the salt in real good, then I let them marinate in the fridge overnight, they absorb the salt better this way and the will freeze better. I learned this from the JUNKMAN.
