Got out 6/26. Launched at Seaview ramp in Linwood. Trolled a kunclkhead out to Risley, down Broad Thorofare, and back Sod Throfare. I really wanted to see how long it would take so I would know when my wife goes out yacking with me.
BUT for the third time, the aduster bolt on my back turbo fin came undone when pedaling. Has anyone else had any trouble with the adjuster nut backing off during use?
I had to pull the drive out and screw the bolt back in as tight as I could and then wrap lots of mono around it. It still backed off against the mono. http://nedlud.com/fishing/fin.jpg

Damn that stinks....Never had a paddle break down ;) Just kidding man. Thats a real bummer. Ive read of things like that happening recently on the kfs board. Check the hobie section. I believe they have a fix kit for it.

Yep That's why I always carry a paddle (or two in my sea kayak).
Haven't seen this problem in KFS or HC. I left a message over at Hobie for Matt. I'll see what he says.
Hobie is like Microsoft. They keep coming out with upgrades. My Outback is probably about Outback 7.0 a. LOL

Barrell, Thanks for offering me one of your nuts. I've also had an ongoing discussion on the Hobie Forum. (with pictues.) Adjuster nut discussion. (http://www.hobiecat.com/community/viewtopic.php?p=17331#17331)
I got 1" bolts with nylock nuts to free up the yoke. I also got nylock nuts to replace the knurled nuts.
Now I just have to wait a week to try it out.

Drifted behind south end of OC on 6/26. Fished from about 8:00am-10:00am. Didn't go to far because it looked like it was going to storm. I don't mind fishing in the rain, but lightning doesn't seem to be much fun. Wind was pretty bad, but did manage one short fluke on a white bucktail and gulp minnow.
Went out the same day from around 5:00pm-7:30pm The tide was running real fast. Went to one of my favorite creeks, and did not catch anything. The tide and wind made it real difficult to fish. I'll be back out next week. Either 7/5 or 7/6.
Also, Im not even going to begin with the nut jokes. :D :D

Out tonight behind NWW 7-11 incoming tide. Water was much colder(as low as 64)and very dirty. Tough to troll without getting all gobbed up. Managed one decent blue on a bass assassin and had several swings and misses on a popper. Very calm and I could here fish hitting the surface everywhere but they were not interested in any thing I was trying.
It seems to me that as more bait shows up I am not doing as well with my go to soft plastics or poppers. Any suggstions?

Try really ripping that popper thru the water. Sometimes a real noisy retreave will start the bite. Lots of splash and movement. Hope this helps.
Sometimes, after a short strike on a popper, I let it play dead. We've caught many a fish that way. Good Luck

Thanks Pop Pop I will give it a try. Another question, I usually put the popper away once it becomes to too difficult to see my retrieve assuming that the popper is mainly a dusk thing. Will the popper still work in full dark?
Fly fish
06-29-2006, 12:12 PM
Yep. Use a black popper if you have one. pop it then reel really slow then pop it again, etc. I like to switch to a black bomber and troll once it gets dark better though. I might be down this weekend. Still not sure though. I'll call you if I'm coming down.
Good luck

I may not be able to go fishing this week due to our wonderful governor shutting down the state. I was scheduled to have off from work, but am considered one of those "essential" employees that have to report to work during a budget shutdown.

Hi,
Launched from Corson's Monday at 6am-10am
Went to this one spot where some channels meet up. I usually get big fluke and always find it loaded with blues. NOthing there today, it might have been because the current was slow.
Went out thru the inlet and there was some birds working. I couldn't get close since the area was really rough. I had a few baits bitten in half(blues).
Spent the last hour drifting\trolling thru the main channel. I was using my "go to" bait. 6" white worm on small jighead. Caught a 19" weakie and saw a HUGE fluke follow it up to the yak.

had a good night sat 7/8 behind OC trollin structure on my yak. Pretty much every time thru for about 1/2 hour it was nuts, 18" to 22" bass just nailin the 1/2 oz bucktail with rubber white grub.
when that bite slowed went to the north side of the structure and got more on cast and retrive, top water plug and 3/4 oz crippled herring
double digits before I called it quits around 10pm (started at 7). and also got to see an awsome fireworks display to my surprise!

Barnegat Bay 7/4 & 7/8
I had a chance to take our Ocean Ambush out a couple of times during the late night out-going water last week.We fished Barnegat Bay and found very dirty water, mud like and plenty of eelgrass that was thick up inside all the marina's and boat ramps and when that tide shifted it came out in big clumps..Something interesting that we found was that alot of the surface action from Snapper Bluefish and Short Stripers was found hanging around the outskirts of these pods of weed. The bait must of been using it as cover and the fish were picking them off around it...
We broke in our new trolling motor at the same time and it preformed very well in the fast running currents.Upgrading to a Minn Kota Riptide 40 thrust from our old freshwater 30 made a big difference on what we like to do....
Hopefully things will clean up a bit, I know that there are plenty of Weakfish in the bay to be had....

Let me double check the make and spec's tonight when I get home, my buddy Ron just picked up a new one of them aswell and I never even really noticed which one it was....
We were experienencing a lack of battery life early this season with the original older battery and just recently the trolling motor we had on it took in some water and seized up on us....

Sorry - I was on a business trip all this week.
Got out of Sea Bright last Saturday 8 July. I fished the area around the public "Free" beach.
Trolled around a few yellow bomber type lures and a few crystal minnows. No real luck - a few small blues. I'd seen a huge school of herring/shad the week before and hoped that finally the water temps had gotten right.
Nothing taken on the hard baits, but the Gulps were producing small flatties at a regular rate. Tried the white shrimp - Good. The pink minnows (with twister-style tail) were not productive and would probably be better at night.
thanks

I'm stuck in dry dock. The dreaded Hobie drive leak :( (now since fixed by Hobie:D ) struck last weekend. I am waiting for Hobie to get back to me. I could probably smear some glop over the leak but I learned a long time ago not to try and fix anything still under warrentee. Meanwhile I'm just riding my bicycle.

went yak fishing with my brother on 7/14 @ 7:30-11:30am. we pushed off at the 34th street bridge in ocean city and went south in the icw. the water seemed a bit cold.
we fished with bucktails, minnows, minnow/squid combo, and threw various other lures. it's the first time we have set off in the ocean city area, so it was more of a searching expedition. unfortunately, we didn't have any luck there, but it was a beautiful day to be out there!
we plan on hitting it again soon, so hopefully we can find a spot holding some fish!!

Went out yesterday geared up for flounder but had no success in the waterway I usually fish. Decided to check out a bridge and landed a small striper while trolling. Decided to stay in the area and wound up with 1 18" Striper, 16" fluke, multiple bluefish, a 3' shark and a 25" weakie. The action seemed to be in one area (must have been a hole). I wound up getting pulled around for about 5 minutes by something BIG!!! by the time I got it to the side of the boat and grab the leader, it threw the hook without ever seeing what it was. I am guessing a BIG Weakie or a big stripe. It broke my heart. Im off again in a little bit to see if I can get whatever it was to bite again.
All caught on a 4" shad on a lead head. Even the shark. Never had that happen before...
Get out there while it's hot!!

As I understand it in the early models of the Hobie Outback they sometimes had trouble getting enough plastic into the front part of the drive well. This is where the front of the drive drops into. They realized the problem quickly and fixed it in their later molds. Roto molded kayaks are basically a couple of buckets of plastic pellets droped in a hot mold which is then swished around controled by a computer. Like dipping a candle, the plastic builds up.
In typical Hobie fashion they replace the hull for any that had this problem. They also have a Hobie rep (Matt Miller) on the Hobie site every day that answers any questions that people have.
Bar none, they have the best customer service of any company that I have ever bought from.

Took the Hobie out of CISP yesterday. Floated thru the back a few times and went out front. Didn't hook up, though had a couple of good strikes. Didn't see any bend rods all day.
But I when out front at low tide there is a sand bar nearly at the point of Corson's that must go 300+yds. Really neat. Hope it's still around in the fall when the fish are there in numbers.
Unintentionally was WAY out in front of Sea Isle jettys due to strong current and lack of attention while fishing. Thank God for Peddle Power!

Out in the kayak last night for the first time in 3 weeks, 6-9 behind Stone Harbor last half of incoming beginning of outgoing. Trying out some new spots, turned out to be a wake boarding hot spot so I moved into some real small creeks. Missed a couple but did manage one bass 22" in about 3 feet of water trolling a bass assassin. Water temps arounf 74. Did not expect any action as the depth started coming up but it was a nice surprise. Also got a 6" oyster cracker(I think), it looked like a puff fish with a huge mouth and teeth compared to the size. I will be done moving after this weekend so hope to get back to my regular fishing schedule!

Went out last night looking for new spots around Stone Harbor inlet 6-9 stong incoming tide water 72-74. Managed a 24" bass and a small blue right after dark. Nothing but a couple of missing plastic tails and a couple misses on a popper until dark set in. Would have liked to stay out once the bite started but I had a mirage drive malfunction. The front flipper shaft pulled out, right as I was trolling the upcurrent side of the bridge. Scary couple of minutes while I reeled in my lines and got may paddle ready while avoiding the bridge pilings. Once I got in I took a look and just had to reset the shaft and tighten a set screw. I was worried it would be worse.
Sure am glad I don't have to paddle all the time:D .
Hobie, Is that a common problem with the Peddle Drive boats? Seems like I hear alot of people w issues like this
FisherTim
07-29-2006, 08:55 AM
Not really. Mine is a '03 and I've never had a problem w/ it. There was some hull problems; mostly w/ the '04 sand colored hulls. Something about the way the plastic molds different in different colors. Hobie quickly replaces a leaky hull. A design change in the drive seems to need more routine maintenance.
I've got 3 other yaks I never use now. Wouldn't want to fish out of anything but a Hobie. And they are VERY stable.

07-30-2006, 08:07 AM
jc, No it is not that common. We have sold 165 foot drives and had problems with two older ones that were imediatly replaced with new boats. They have reinforced the entire drive area in later models. They beleive the problem is caused by customers not locking the drive's in tight. A loose drive can move around in the drive well causing alot of extra wear.

Out last night behind Stone Harbor not a thing until I accidently snagged a big ray. Those things sure are powerful. It seemed like they were everywhere, as I peddled into shallower water I was surrounded by about 50 rays mulling around.
Do they keep the other fish out of the area or was it just coincidence that I do not get anything when the are around?
I thought it was going to be a disapointing night until I got back to my launch spot near the bridge and fish were busting along the shadow line. Managed to get a half dozen small blues. I was hoping there was something under them but I could not get anything but the blues no matter what lure I used.
Beautiful night, nice breeze keeping the bugs away.
