Ya win some battles and ya lose some  . Got down to island around 830, almost low tide. decided to do some scouting checkingout some areas that i havent visited so far this year. started fishing the Harvey Cedars surf around 1030. nothing to show for my efforts the first few hours. managed to catch a herring a small jig, he became bait. didnt have equipment to liveline him so cut him in half and tossed him out there...nothng. bunker chunks..nothing. bunker head...nothing. stinky snotty clam..gets slammed at 1pm. I could not stop this fish  ! i have caught bass to 23lb on this rod/reel and have had no problems. this bi**h ran straight out..stopped..and then just cruised right into the end of a jetty. she then just sat there and just kept shaking her head. i could feel my line rubbing rocks....when my rod started to vibrate  from the line rubbing along the rocks i knew i was done. after about 45 seconds of that my line went...dink! oh well. she was(still is) a smart fish. she didnt get big by being stupid. if anybody catches a slob with a tandem hook rig in her jaw...enjoy it. im not going to say that she was a 50lb'er but given the fish i have caught on that rod i would venture to say she was in the 30/35lb class. I would have stayed down last night but had to head home for a family dinner/function. i will be back down on monday morning before work. on a side note i observed a couple guys doing pretty well on the kingies. kingfish rigs and bloods did the trick. Big Fish are still around. Good luck Gentlemen.

Hey Surfrat, if it makes you feel any better, I watched my buddy lose a definite 50# or better Wed, night. He's been hunting for that fish for a while. In fact, I speak with him weekly as he asks me why he hasn't had his shots as I have. Well, he had his shot and blew it. This fish threw so much water, I thought it was a school of fish on bait until I saw his rod doubled over. He couldn't just let her run and insisted on setting the hook countless times while she was running. He eventually worked the hook right out of her mouth.

Nick -- I feel for you. Many of us have been there.
I was eeling Harvey Cedars on Wednesday night and hooked into a nice fish. Like your's she goti into the current really ran. Suddently, I realized my power pro was gone and I was down to the mono backing. Before I knew it, I was down to 4 turns of the backing on the spool. I reluctantly tightened down the drag and was able to make some progress. After two more shorter runs, I was lucky and able to land a 33 pound 9 oz fish. Between the current and those jetties, it's easy to lose 'em there.
Don't worry, you'll get her next time. Tight lines.

Bruce, i was fishing the area that we fished last week.
Fishaholic29, i only set the hook when i get the hit. a big fish will put enough pressure on you, the rod, the hook. you are 100% correct that the only thing your buddy did was make the hole bigger than it already was.
BL Mike, nice fish. think i saw a pic of it in one of the LBI Baitshops. congrats.
in talking to a few other anglers some guys express how pised they would be but not me. i was in awe of the strength of this fish. losing that fish just makes me want to fish more. we learn from mistakes, experiences, failures, etc. i would do it again in a heartbeat. i'll be down for a couple hours on monday morning.

I missed a monster on lbi fri. night, the 50lb leader snapped at my hook, i tied my snell wrong, oh well, only thing i've been getting over 36" are HUGH sandsharks which by the way eat bunker heads.powerful but no cigar. thinkin its the last week for any sizeable fish here on the island..hope i am wrong Ed

Nick, sometimes you're the windsheild, so today you're the bug. It coulda been worse. Losing a fish is better than no fishing at all :( Or getting towed back from fishing LOL.
