How many people on this site kayak fish, and where do you usually launch?
I am in Stone Harbor, and will be out almost every weekend from now until my junk freezes off  - or the fish stop biting  .

Fly Fish: I launch from the free bridge area, the toll bridge,(both near Stone Harbor), the 81st street municipal pier, or a few places around the Avalon 30th street bridge ( big bridge on the blvd.), or Avalon manor. I'll assume (a bad thing to do) from your name you fly fish, while I do my fishing with spinners or conventionals.

If I am fishing the back (usually at night) I launch from Strathsmere free ramp or the sod banks on the bay side of rush chattim bridge.
Ocean launches (day time) now that the season is over and the lifeguards are gone any beach is accessable. A beach buggy pass is a plus but lugging your yak over the sand dunes is not out of the question when you see birds working in an area you have no buggy pass for. During the fall run I always patrol with my yak mounted to the roof just in case the stripers are just past casting distance. In past years schools could be spotted 1/4 to 1/2 mile out working bait. You can not beat a yak for this type of fishing. You can paddle right into a school of feeding fish without spooking them. You will be amazed at the noise the fish make as they crash bait on the surface.

I'm with jettyjock with the free ramp in back of Strathmere or behind the free bridge at CISP. I'm not as confident as jettyjock with the surf launches but I want to improve. Fishing in the back along the sod banks at night is a real trip! We troll bombers at times or drift and toss poppers or Yozuri darters at any splashes we hear. I want to try trolling with atube eel this fall as well as use some needlefish I just purchased. Keep us posted on how you are doing down near Stone Harbor. I'll do the same with CISP. By the way, what kind of kayak are you using? I just put in an order for the new Ocean Kayak Prowler 13. I cannot wait to get it!!!

Drifter,
What kind and color do you have? I have a Tarpon 120 yellow and a Ocean Malibu two in repulsive green that I take my girlfriend fishing on. I have seen a couple of people yak fishing near the free bridge, but have never been in the water at the same time to introduce myself. I spin fish from the yak unless I am going out to a sandbar or someplace where I can get off and fish. I have really cut back at the amount of flyfishing I do since I bought a kayak a few years ago. It just doesn't seem like I would have the room for the line.
Jettie,
I do the same in the fall as far as patroling the beach with my yak on top. I have been in some unreal situations. I still have yet to perfect my launch and landing, but I still get out if it's not too rough. Here's a pic of my best day in the surf in SH. All small bass (except for one about 25"), but I nailed 10 in about an hour. Gotta love it!!

sic,
I fish at night as well, and have had some decent success. Most of my fish (95%) are caught about an hour before sunset and sunrise, or at dock lights at night. congrats on the new kayak. If you need help with outfitting it with anything (rod holders, fish finder, etc) let me know.
We all should try to get together. I have some KILLER spots.

i launch at the margate bridge, or at drag channel, although i haven't been there this year. i mostly flyfish, and don't have any trouble. i love having a fish finder on board as well.
it looks like we need to organize a kayak gathering. if the wind wasn't kicking today, i'd be out.

I kayak from our dock in Stone Harbor and usually stick to the freebridge area. I have not used my flyrod from the kayak but then again I don't have it rigged for fishing so I have trouble stowing things. I usually just take what fits in my vest.

Fly Fish: I have a blue Necky (from Canada). I also fish Stratmere, and the West Wildwood beach area near the train tressle. I got the yak in '01 from TI Kayak at their SIC store. It was a trade in, so Keith set it up for fishing for me.

Flyfish,
I fish out of a sand colored Hobie that I got from Barrell. Love being able to hold the rod all the time. Beats my old Cobra all to he!!.
I mostly fish behind OCNJ from the Cooper bridge, Seaview Ave. ramp and along side OC-Longport bridge.

Tunny, Good to hear your back! Have you been out with the Bow yet? Too many Chiggers for me. I'm waiting for a frost!
If you're looking a Yak for surf & back bay you have to get a sit on top so you don't get swamp by a wave out front. I had a Cobra Fish n Dive which I reccomend highly. Very stable! It's also designed for diving so it has to be stable to climb in. The only draw back in the back is it is slow. That's what you sacrifice for stability. Being slow makes it a bear to paddle against a hard running tide. That is why I put a transom and an electric trolling motor on mine. Thanks to E-bay I got a great 43lb Motor Guide Great White (saltwater) for a steal! Cobra also makes other models that are a little smaller such as the Explorer & Navigator which I hear are a pretty stable & faster but I have no experience with them.
For the back the Pungo is a nice kayak. It's a sit in model but I don't think it's a good choice for the surf. It won't break the bank and Dick's has them on sale quite often.
I now have a Ocean Ambush which I bought from TomOCNJ. I love it but it limits me a little. It's a large 2 man model that is very heavy and bulky. It comes with a built in transom & battery box and my 43Lb Motor Guide pushes it nicely but adds more weight. 2 large men fish it pretty easily and comfortable. Just ask Strikes!. Since it is large and bulky the trailer is almost a must especially when your by yourself.
That's about the extent of my knowledge. If you're still fishing Brigatine stop & see Barrell at Barrell Surf & Sport. Very knowlegeable!! Also you can do some good DD on a number of other sites. Just do a Goggle search.
I haven't looked lately but E-bay had some good deals & the shipping wasn't a problem since they can be Air Freighted to Philly and you can pick up there for under $100.00 shipping.
I hope I helped! If you want to go out back one night drop me an e-mail and I'll bring you on it. Good Luck!

Librarian, is the Seaview Ave ramp the one in Linwood? I've launched from there a few times. Great spot to start out when fishing in the back.

Kayak Drifter: What's that area near the train tracks like? I've often thought of heading there, but for some reason or another I always pass.

Doyle,
Yeah the ramp is on Seaview ave, in Linwood. You need a parking pass if you are going to leave your car there or you can park out on the street. Fast access to Scull's bay and Reisley Channel.
If you do decide to get a pass, Linwood has a real early cut off date where they raise the price. Sometime in April.

Reckoning: I usually fish that area in the early flounder season, May through late June usually. Around that time, the flounder start to move out, but worse, boat traffic picks up around July 1-4th, then is pretty hectic through early September. I haven't fished it much in the fall, but I figure blues are there chasing bait, stripers would be on the sod banks south (left side when looking from the West Wildwood park area) of the train tressle, and I talked to a guy last week who caught some weeks down the ICW from there. I have had my best fishing north (right) of the tressle near the first few channel markers in the early flounder season. If you try this time of the year, please let me know how you did. Thanks.

I can't fish that with a Yak, but I have thought about it in my boat. If I get a chance to test it this fall I'll e-mail you my results. (and post them here)

Anybody know anything about the Old Town Preditor series for fishing and hunting?
KAYAK DRIFTER

Reckoning: I also fish the area we spoke about in a boat,( if conditions aren't good for the yak) but haven't done that area in the fall of the year. Because of the report of weaks in the area, and the chance for blues or striper action, I may try there, in addition to the other areas I fish in the fall. If you go there, look for a 15' Whaler. I haven't put the name (Little "Z"-My little guy) on the boat yet. Good Fishing.

Fish Magnet:
I believe the preditor series has the same hull design as the Old Town loon series. Old town does make a quality product. My first kayak was a loon 111 which has a slight v hull with soft chines. It handled well and was fairly fast for a short boat. I was not impressed with the initial stabelity (getting in and out). It spit me and a brand new stradic in the drink when I lost my balance and I went out the next day and bought a daggar delta expedition. I really like the daggar as it has a much more stable feel to it. This model is now discontinued however.

Kayak Drifter: I have a 19ft Carolina Skiff....I'll keep an eye out for you. I have been looking at that spot for years but haven't ever stopped to try it. Seems to be perfect ambush spot for stripers. It has tons of cover, a nice deep hole and a fairly good current. As was mentioned, it's the traffic that makes it iffy. Looks like the best spot is right up against the pilings on the downcurrent side. E-mail me results if you try it. (I don't want to miss the post by accident).
