Heard some lag bass had been taken recently, so decided to do a little yak attack yesterday. Met up with barrell at 6am launched shortly afterward.
As i was paddling into the area I wanted to fish, i noticed a lg swirl. I scared something from the shallow water. Then 2 more. These were sizeable fish. I realized the were stripers. Big girls. I was throwing a yozuri swimmer and on my other rod a mag popper. They seem real spooky, but managed to have one hooked up in the 20-30lb class before loosing it. had 4 other hits that i missed.
I decided to go again today. was on the water at 6am, alone. I fished the same area, with the same LG swirls. I hooked up with what I thought was a snag. Then my snag made a run unlike any run I've ever had. My yak was getting pulled faster than I will evr be able to paddle. All the while, I could feel the weight and strength. This was without a doubt, my biggest bass ever hooked up. I was getting pulled at a remarkable pace and drag was singin. I had a boat anchored about 200 yards away and they had a few lines out and were on the hook. Iwas just about to yell for them to clear lines, as I approched them on there bow. They didn't see me, or know I hooked up. Just then the fish stops. My momentum is still going strong. Then my worst fear, the beast decides to run back at me, and past me in the other direction. My line was slack, but saw it zooming by me in the other direction. I was crancking as fast as I could, but knew this was not good because of my momentum and her size and stregth. I got it tight, the rod bent, my kyak started to slow and spin as drag stared to zing again.....Then the plug popped out. It was like someone ripped my heart out. I pulled my yak on the bank and had a smoke, still trembling from the fight. I lost my desire to fish anymore for the morning. I was beaten like a yard dog. My biggest fish in the yak was 25lb. This one was MUCH bigger.
after a short nap this morning, I feel as though tomorrow will be the day I get my first 40lber. My confidence is back.
I'm not sure if I'll be able to land a fish of that magnitude. The sudden switch in direction after it gets me going in one direction is the killer, so i'll anchor tomorrow and see how I do. Will post report.

Got off the couch at 10pm last night and headed to a bridge where some biguns have been reported. Got there and eyed up the 4 to 5 foot gnarly chop and whirpools. Decided it wasnt a smart move.Headed to another nearby bridge that people commonly fish off the top of. That one looked doable as the tide was almost topped off.
Water was cold and muddy. Worked over some well lit docks with no luck. Trolled and plugged the bridge till 1 am without a hit. No surface action whatesoever. Need to give it a couple days to warm and clear. Or I should have just gone to bed early and hooked up with eelball in the morning.

The new Hobie turbo flippers are pretty rad looking. They are longer than the originals and a whole new shape. Made out of dual density rubber. And they can be tuned for either more speed or more torque.

Barrell,
are those new fins available yet?
barrell
05-05-2006, 04:02 AM
Yes, I used them tonight and I am suprised how much more work they are. Yes they provide alot of speed but its not free speed you pay for it in more knee and calf strain. They are not for everybody.

Went out yesterday afternoon for the whole outgoing, almost had the grand slam. Striper on Wildeyes bunker, fluke on Gulp Shrimp on Jig Head, and Bluefish on anything. I just couldn't get the weakfish. Water temp around 60. Overall my best day/night of the season. Hopefully I can get the slam tonight!

Got up early yesterday and hit the river. Bass were moving all over, but wanted nothing to do with anything I threw. Switched from a swimmer to topwater and finally had an explosion. After a brief battle got the fish next to the yak. I reached for the mouth and mistimed it. took the top treble into the thumb while the bass was hooked with the bottom treble. Took a quick peek and saw it was burried pretty deep, past the barb. I was able to flip the bail while holding the rod in the same hand, then tried to lift the fish by my thumb. The fish shook while I was lifting it and the hook tore threw and out. The fish then swam away because I flipped the bail. I was bleeding pretty bad, but turned my attention back to the fish that was still hooked. I crancked it back down, got it back to me and this time made no mistake. It was a nice 30" male. I know it was male cause it was spoogin all over. Put some pressure on the deep wound and kept fishin for about another hour. I kept that fish. I figured it owed me some fillets.
I probably shouda got stitches. Its been a day and a half and still bleeding. Crap, That hurt!!!

Got out yakking last night with Bucktailman adn Spanishfly. I almost had my first Grand Slam for inshore fishing. My score was three bass to 24". One blue and my first weakie of the season, lost a nice flounder just about at the net, so I have to settle for a triple. Our fist location we all hit strikes, literally, we had snags and lost our rigs. Some of us twice. We moved to second location and that's where I found my fish. Rodger nice to see you again and nice souveniers up on the ramp. Fish were hard to find but a few cooperated. Fish were caught on all different kinds of plastics. Tide was beginning of incoming at second spot. Nice night, warm, light winds, water 60. Good time spent with friends. Hank I told you that I wasted my time making that bag for you. Just kidding, some night we'll fill that thing up. Left at 2:00am. Keith the bagman

Bagman, kiss my bass. I managed the ol'e skunk for the first time this season. I couldn't find a fish anywhere. The bagman had a few fish that failed out of school to bite on his lures. DAMN. I knew I should have paddled a little further to that piling. Good Job Keith.

Hey Hank,
It's a good thing Alfredo had his depthfinder on him otherwise I would have been at the wrong piling for quite a while. I di go back to the original piling and that is where I got the weakie and the blue. Talk to you later this week. Some of us have to work. Keith the bagman

Barrell sent me a Mirage drive "Turbo" kit and I gotta tell ya...I LUV IT!
The installation was simple and the performance was better then I expected smile.gif
I was able to maintain a constant 5.1 mph with the Turbo kit installed. That was my max speed with the stock fins. Yeh they are more work on the legs but if you're like me, I use my yak trips as an extra workout session smile.gif
I give the new "Turbo Kit" two striper thumbs up!
Thanx Barrell smile.gif

Slow pick this weekend, I was only able to get out during the day. I picked up a bunch of blues and a 26" bass. All on plastics during the outgoing. Water temp right around 60. The wind made it difficult again.

Im heading out behind Ocean City on Thursday Morning around 5:30am. It will be my first salt water yak trip of the year. I'll be drifting for some flounder, and also throwing some lures.
If anyone else is going, send me an email.
Also, anyone know of any bait shops in that area open around 5am. If not I will have to delay my trip about a half hour.
Thanks,

Out last night behind NWW 5-10pm, 2 blues 2 bass all around 20" caught early around slack tide trolling plastics and rattle traps. Conditions were near perfect around dusk and after dark but for some reason I could not get any takers trolling the sod banks and casting to a couple of bridges. Maybe I am doing something wrong I thought I would do well around dusk. Out again tonight!

Hello all. Long time reader, but a new member. I've been kayak fishing for two years and do all my fishing in the Delaware Bay off the Villas. I have a Wilderness Systems Pungo sit-inside yak outfitted with a fishing package. Looking forward to picking up some helpful equipment and fishing tips through this "column".
My last trip (last Saturday)was truly memorable as I was lucky enough to get a bait through all the sharks and connect with a large bass. After a tremendous battle, I managed to boat a 46"er, my personal best! Hope the wind and weather cooperate again this weekend for another attempt.

Out last night 5-9 behind NWW exact opposite of the night before. I could not get anything until dusk. Picked up 2 bass 18" while trolling the sod banks. One on a 3" Storm Bunker and the other on white bucktail. I thought the wind was going to be a problem but it completely settled down at slack tide.

Drydock,
Looking forward to getting reports from someone else in the area. I'll keep an eye out for you too. I generally work the area from the old Bayview Marina, south to Hollywood Blvd.
Went out yesterday, late in the afternoon to catch the out-going tide. Unfortunately, the wind came with the tide change so it was a very short ,and very wet, trip. We'll try again next weekend

Fished Barnegat from Muni-Dock through Backbay to near 42. 2 Weakfish (34.5" and 36") and several small blues.
All taken on slow paddled Yellow Schoolbus Bombers or the Yellow/Green Megabait.
No luck on Pinkies, Gulps, or other soft bait. Drifted some clam, but caught salad and grass.
Thanks,

Yesterday, noon to early evening the Ocean off Brigantine was like a lake. Porpoise were feeding very close to shore, up and down the beach. The striper bite was on. Conditions were perfect to launch a kayak and swim your favorite bunker plug. I wish that I had predicted this Tuesday.

Went out from 11-3 today for the outgoing, what a difference a day makes. Only small fish up to 22" but got one what seemed like every cast. 9 bass and 11 blues. Fished the skinny water about 8 ft deep around 65 degrees. Bucktail w/gulp minnow, gold kastmaster and pink paddle tails, it did not seem to matter.

Gave up at around 10 and heading back in trolling a 1 1/2 diver wood plug and hit into some small blues. Had 2 for lunch. Looked like great conditions today, thought i was going to do better. Maked a ton of fish along a stretch of sod.

Got out last night with Bucktailman and Spanishfly. We hit the lower end of OC and were treated to a nice sunset and low winds throughout the evening. We did get into some bass but not many. Alfredo was high hook for the night with one keeper and a short. Hank got a short and a flounder. I missed a couple. We were using blurple bombers small and some plastics. I hit the north end on the way home and got three more bass up to 26". Thought the 26" was going to be a keeper based on the fight. NOT. Couple of bite off on blues. Had the last place all to myself which I thought would have had pepole on it. All in all a beautiful night for the opening of shoobie season. The staties were sure busy from what we could see from our spot. Lights were on all night. Good luck everyone. Keith the bagman

I got out again on Monday. Took Sunday off to watch the races. Nice job Marco almost winning the big one at age 19.
Finnaly got a chance to try out the new Hobie turbo flippers on al long run. Coming back on flat creek it usually takes me about 45 minutes. With the turbos it was only 30 minutes. The are really fast.
Now if the Heavy Metal Hookers beat the Philthy Britches in next Sunday's roller girl match everything will be all right with the world

Hey Guys.
Gonna be a new yakker soon.....
Saw a few guys out and I think it's right up my alley.
Questions on a fishing yak.
Can it be a 2 person????
Any locals sell them?? I'm in De.
What accessories do you have?
What should I be looking for?
Can you rig any yak up for fishing??
Another question, I saw a tri yak online......
Right now it would be my son (10) & I but with a tri I thought I could bring my daughter out as well. not to fish but just to cruise...
Will mostly be fishing the Elk River as well as the DE around St Augustine Beach...
Few times a year we would bring with to LBI as my parents hae a place right before the causeway....
And lastly any pics you can post of your set ups?????
I did post over in the barn sale to see what type of feedback I would receive then I found this.......
Thx in advance.....

Tandems seem like a good idea but they are heavy and hard to trasport and more work to paddle. You also encounter the problem of casting with someone so close by. Your 10 year old son can paddle his own kayak faster than you can. At 8 years old most kids can paddle just fine if you get them something short and light. (old towne cricket sells for $300 and is ideal) You have alot of options depending on your wheight and height. When each of you have your own kayak it is alot less hassle and more fun. However if you insist on a tandem look at the cobra tandem or the new 12 foot 8 inch Hobie foot propelled Outfitter.

I'll be out tomorrow around 5am behind OC drifting for fluke. If anyone is going to be around shoot me an email. I'll be in a blue ocean Kayak.
I was out last on 5/18 and managed one 18 inch fluke on gulp shrimp. Will be using the shrimp and mackerl this time.
I normally just drift with a one oz bucktail with the bait.
Do any of you guys use a top and bottom rig? Or a fishfinder rig? Just thinking about switching up. I normally use a fish finder when fishing in the Delaware bay in a boat.

Was behind Strathmere yesterday in the yak. Two keeper fluke and a few shorts and one short striper.
When I first went out everything was perfect, the tide, the wind but no fish. The wind picked up and I caught fish - go figure.

Me and Yakass hit the ICW in Cape May County for most of the incoming last night. Tried some new areas and was rewarded with a 10 pound 33 inch Weakie. He fell to a trolled purple bomber. We paddled over 5 miles according to google earth and around 11pm the fog rolled in thick and made the return trip a little hairy. We did have extra cloths and a cell phone in case we were stranded. Luckily we got a fix on our radio tower just before it disappeared in the fog. We then were able to follow the sods and keep the wind in our face to get back to our lanch location.

1. Yes - you can use a 2 person kayak, but it will be heavy and slow going.
2. Yes - There are several local stores and mail order places online. I'd recommend you talk to Barrel and kayakfishingstuff.com.
3. I have a
Paddle Keeper
Anchor Trolley (with anchor of course)
Milk Crate
6 Pole holders of various designs
Lip Gripper (Important for landing toothy fish)
Standard Paddle
Paddle Leash
Home Made Kayak Kart (PVC cart with wheels to move it around)
Home Made Kayak Hanger (Ropes/Holder I use to hold it to the back of my shed.)
4. Look for stability but stop being a wimp. (I was way too concerned with not falling in - Sorry) I was worried about getting my gear wet or lost. Just tie it down and look for a nice, light kayak that you can comfortable fit in and easily move around. Most dealers will let you test them out.
5. No - some kayaks are able to be rigged. Some kayaks are meant to be fished. Others just have no hope. Go for a fishing model and look for a model that has other features. I picked a model that is a Sit-On-Top (SIT) and has the ability to ride waves and take a good beating. A lot of people select a Sit-Inside model (Like what you see those river kayakers doing who go off waterfalls...) While they can definately be fished, they don't offer the array of customizable features a SIT 'yak can offer.
6. You could go for a cruise with your 2 children in a kayak, but you'd be cruising more for a beating than anything else. Kayaking isn't hard - don't take me wrong - but adding 2 people who add little or no forward motion is a bad idea. Yes, if your a tough dude with the ability to really rip though the water, 2 riders is possible. The Malibu X-Factor comes with a child seat "Accessory" if you'd like. But honestly, Kayaking your two kids around would probably prove difficult.
- My experience:
Get a good feel for the sport before you venture to bring your kids. It's not hard to kayak alone, but bring about a hundred pounds of bait, gear, food, and drinks and see what your kayak handles like then... Now, add in your children. I'm not discouraging you from trying (though it might sound that way). I wouldn't love fishing the way I do now if someone hadn't gotten me into it early in life, but I worry that bringing one of more children on a kayak could prove to be a burden if not a safety hazard. I've sent you an email and as soon as my fiance (Spelling) gets my camera back to me i'll send you some pictures of my rigging.

Out last night 6-10 behind NWW. Incoming tide water 69-66 and very clean. Picked up 26" bass, 18" Fluke, and a bunch of blues up to 18". Smaller bass assassins and 1/2 oz bucktail with white gulp minnow were the lures of choice. I was drifting next to a boat Salty Dog? that was doing real well with blues and bass up to 26" on a surface popper. I was going to get out the popper but the combination of darkness and multiple treble hooks scares me!
