As much as I hate to say it.. I wanna try my hand at freshwater fishing this spring. Not because I have gone soft, or can't find fish in the bay, but because of other non-fisherman. I want my girlfriend to get into fishing like I am, but she gets seasick easily. I was thinking Bauers would be a good place to start. I just wanna get a general feedback as to who has had luck there.

Capt. Joe.

Bauers pond is a great place to start off a person that get seasick easily! The fishing is exceptional! Plenty of large mouth and Hybrid stripers to be caught as well as crappie catfish and sunnies! It's a great place...And I try to get there as often as possible! And the owner (Joe) is a great guy! Give it a shot...you and yours will like it!

Good luck...and maybe I'll see ya there! ;)

Capt. Joe,

I'm sure you won't be the only one coming out of the closet in the new freshwater forum. Bauers is a good place to start.

Joe- Bauers is a great place to spend a lazy day. Pack a lunch and have a picnic on the dock. There are several ways to catch those hybrids. Once you figure it out you can have a ball all day long with those bulldogs. My son and I caught 20+ the last time we were there in September. The biggest was about 25 inches and had to go 6.5 to 7 lbs. We went during the week and had the place to ourselves. I highly recommend it. It may take a couple of trips to figure the fish out though. Joe in the bait garage will help you in any way he can. He wants you to catch fish and come back.

I'm with everyone else here Joe! Bauer's Fishing Preserve (http://bauerspond.tripod.com/) is a great place to intrduce someone to fishing. I take my kids there and they luv it smile.gif

It's also a great place for nonbeginners who plain and simply want to catch fish! Like Skip said~ "there's plenty of large mouth and Hybrid stripers to be caught as well as crappie catfish and sunnies".

Best of all the guy who runs the show is a class act and long time Barner (HyBrid Joe) who's been a supporter of our community since our early days.

For future refrerence you can Find Bauers ad listed on our Home Page (http://www.TheBassbarn.com) Stop by and check'em out!

Baurer's Pond is a little piece of fishing heaven.
Everything mentioned above is true but you all left out the TROUT! Anyone that targets NJ trout would love a shot at the fish that Joe fills his pond with. I've caught brown, brook, tiger, and rainbow trout all day long. My largest was an 8 1/2lb Rainbow which far surpassed any of the state stocked trophies I've taken.
The largemouth bass and hybrid fishing is unmatched anywhere else in South Jersey. There are also plenty of crappies, sunfish, perch, and catfish to keep the kids happy.
Honestly for anyone new to the sport of fishing, this is the best place to start off.

Was wondering one about one thing that I read on the site. It said the record for hybrid stiped bass has been "unofficially" broken 3 times in the last few years. Why are they not official? Because its a preserve?

It's unofficial because it's catch and release with the hybrids. I believe the only fish you can keep are the trout, panfish and the catfish. I've seen record sized hybrids but haven't hooked one yet. They're there!

Smellinfishy we will open the first sat in march
the HyBrids usually start to bite around 50 degrees in water temp. Right now we got ice. I will be stocking Trout hopefully before that date but only if there is a big hole I can put them in. Thanks loads for all the great comments and I hope ta see ya all real soon . Oh yea The State Record thing Capt Mike you hit it on the head the HyBrids are catch and release only and if I had them weighed and brought back they would not make it. Any way they are my pets . You would not let me take your dog home would ya. Again thanks its nice to know sombody apperciates the hard work and dedication we have put into the preserve over the years.

could I bring a two and a half year old there, or should i wait until she's older? she tells me all of the time that she wants to fish. i'm looking around now for a hot pink blank to build her a rod.

Bauers rocks!!! I have spent plenty of time there. The preserve is clean, easily accessable and Joe is the best on helping everyone out.I love going there in summer.Too many jet skiers and trash fish in the surf.Hybird stripers and cats are the perfect cure for summertime doldrums.Try it..you'll like it.

Absolutely! My kids started going there at around that age. Joe will even lend you a PFD for the little tykes! Most of the fishing is done from floating docks with either picnic tables or benches to sit on. Also has rod holderes on the docks B/C we all know how hard it is to get a little one to actually hold a rod for more than a couple of minutes.

Wow guys, I definatly have made up my mind now. Sorry I haven't been around lately, lugging 140 lb spools of 12/3 wire up a 4 story latter isn't something I'm used to, and I come home and crash. But thanks for all the great info guys, im sure my other (and better) 1/2 will love it. As for me.. I'm just happy standing in Dicks holding a rod in my hand. ;)

I have been fishing Bauers for over 23 years and never a once have come up Dry! Joe and his family are the last of a great generation of "Sportsmen and Women".They and their inner circle make up some of Ocean City's Greatest Anglers and Hunters!
The inner circle has made me the Sportsman I am today, and I am so gratified to have been introduced to such a "Wonderful Group of People".

I have caught a variety of fish there and believe you me,these fish provide much more than "Smash Mouth Action"!
Thanks again to Joe,Cathy,Joe Jr.,Elizabeth,Tom P.,Capt.Al...And most of all May the Spirit of Jay Bauer always be celebrated in the "Brightest of Lights".
One of the first fee to pay "Lunker Lounges" in The State! One of the last always to be rememberd by Thousands.
