In the spring go to Greenlane Resovior in upper montco and rent one of there lil electric john boats. Fish the overhanging brush at the waters edge just opposite and to the left of the rental area. Upper lake .

Most of our South Jersey lakes have plenty of crappie swimming around. The big lakes such as Lenape and Union hold tremendous numbers of crappie. Once you find them you can count on catching all day long.

We've caught many crappie over 2lbs and most days we're the only ones out on the water. Small chartreuse jigs (1/32-1/64oz) tipped with curly tail worms or small minnows are hard to beat.

Hopewell lake in Berks county. Decent number of crappies can be caught, not much size though. most 7-10 inches. right after ice out, small minnows under a bobber. Theres one little secret spot thats not so secret, that is the only place to catch them (FROM SHORE)
If youre not looking for a meal, the schuylkill river has em'. all catch and release though, cuz those fish are dirty. Below the fairmount dam, small jig or minnow.

Far26,
Are the curly tails chartreuse also? I usually do well with a chartreuse tube jig w/ 1/32 lead. I fish from the shore usually try to bounce the bottom or steady retrieve. You are right minnows are hard to beat.
fatboy,
As far as location you can find bigger crappies just about anywhere but mainly through a lot of trial and error I have found some "spots" that produce big ones 10+ inches on a regular basis.

What a great fish to catch and eat. I am not sure that you want to eat the crappies in NJ. I believe that there is a health advisory on eating freshwater fish in NJ. Its a shame because crappies are a good fish to eat. I need to go to the states site and read up on the new laws and advisories.

fatboy -
In Depth made a great suggestion. Green Lane has a lot of areas to fish. (Edited see email) Crappies and Sunnies school up in there. Just what you want to introduce a youngster to fishing.
Agree with the previous posts - fathead minnow under a bobber. Meal worms work but wax worms are my preference. If you can't find waxies in bait shops try pet/fish/aquarium stores.
Mr Moderator - you got a problem with my posting spots? :D

If that area's deep try bouncing a chartruse 2in mr twister grub & jighead off the bottom. I used to sit on the gradyville road bridge at springton resevior & catch them all day with my father back before the bridge got fenced off. As a matter of fact I believe that whole area's closed now cause houses are going to be built

Thanks guys for the replies and E-mails. My daughter is excited about going fishing with me this year. I appreciate all the input. I'm going to to let her cut her teeth this year on Crappie , Bluegill and Sea Bass. Hopefully keep her interest and have a future Barner!!
