Too nice today for me not to get out fishing. All my lakes are still iced over so a buddy and I did some river fishing for white perch today. He caught enough grass shrimp for a day of fishing and we managed to have a steady bite all day.

My first striper of the year :D

Felt good to get out fishing again, the rivers should continue to have steady action with white perch, catfish, and small stripers from here on out. March 1st is only 13 days away. smile.gif

Nice report! It sure does feel good to have a bend in your rod, and some tension on your line on a mild day in February! Those look like some decent white perch. Bet they were tasty, too.

I know your secret spot, I know your secret spot!!!! :D That's ok, it's no secret by any means. Gees, ever since the bass pond dried up and killed all the fish, I haven't been down to that ramp, or even back to that whole area, in ages. Glad to hear your catching there. Means the fishing should be happening down by me already. Schweeeet...

This is no secret spot as about 20 other guys were fishing as well yesterday. Funny thing is none of the other fishermen caught a thing. I think the live grass shrimp might be the secret bait. :D
Keith you caught stripers last year? tongue.gif ;)

I caught lots of stripers last year... ;) My prize of around 35 pounds off the beach. When you gonna stick your toes in the sand? Your going flounder fishing with me this year. I need to learn how to catch them buggers better now that I have summers off!

I assume he will be back on and help you out. We have a buddy that catches them down the shore. You can get them in Grassy creeks. He will tell you better how to do it. I only did it a few times. I dont know about catching them on the Delaware. I have caught them in Matts Landing.

Those pictures were taken at the Tuckahoe River. All of our tidal rivers and creeks hold white perch, there are too many to name.
My buddy catches the grass shrimp. He uses a long handled net and scrapes the net along saltwater creeks. He's been at it for quite a while and has become very good at it. We go through quite a bit of shrimp as we often chum also.
They look like a regular shrimp only a miniature version from 1/2-2inch size. Not sure if they are in the Delaware River but I have found them in many freshwater lakes (not enough for bait but one or two here and there).

what else could you use to bait them?

I think live minnows take perch down there as well, probably something small since its cold, and the perch are small as well.

Small bits of bloodworm under a bobber or near a sinker will do just fine as well. But many think that bloods are too expensive to "waste" on perch, so that's why free shrimp will also work nicely smile.gif .

You can also catch them on small spinners and flies, but that's fairly hard to do in the winter unless you have mucho patience.
