Hey Bass Barners -
Just a head's up that you can see how my November visit to Cape May turned out this coming weekend on ESPN2. Tim was a great guy to fish with, and has a pretty good sense of humor! I thoroughly enjoyed the visit, and hope to do much more in Jersey in the future. Hope you guys aren't too cold up there. It's pretty cold here in South Florida today - high of 75 degrees (time to turn on the heater)! Take care!

George,
Thanks for the heads up! I remember Robert telling he was going to shoot this with you.
I am getting my turn at the Florida waters later this week, I'll be in Ocean Reef fishing for what ever the weather will let me. This will be my first time in Key Largo, can't wait to fish the reef and beyond.

George Poveromo George,
Looking forward to the show! I already have it marked on my Calender. I was next to you guys when you were fishing near the party boat at middle shoal that day! I stayed at middle and you went over towards overfalls I think. I tried calling Timmy on the radio, because we really started to catch them good that last part of the ebb tide! (Bucktailing)
Anyhow, can't wait to see the show...And maybe even see my boat in the background!
Thanks again George! ;)

I can't wait to see how it all gets put together after watching the taping. Sitting on the camera boat without a rod was torture. At one point I radioed Don to come get me and I was going to escape on the MCM to fish. Tim wouldn't let me. Something about me ending up in the water before I would be able to climb abord. I guess we will see if Tim teased you too much during the end credits. If Stalker Charter's number appears in place of Tim's I guess he went too far. You guys were pretty comical.

GP- love the show. The whole family enjoyed the giant grouper show.
Can't wait to see a show from our own area. Hope you told people that it's way too crowded for any more boats in Oct and Nov. LOL
Your show- livelining with TerryS was also excellent and turned me on to snagging and livelining bunker. We learned from the flatsrat himself.
Can't wait until this weekend.
George, I have been awaiting the show since last fall....its marked on my calendar and tape is in the VCR....great show last week with those huge goliath grouper. I thought that Tog were difficult to get out of structure   Im headed to Florida at the end of the month and may try to take a shot at them myself. Keep up the great work...MED

Question for anyone that saw the Goliath grouper show. The trick with pocking the swim bladder behind the fin so they can get back down. Can you use the same trick on the little bass and blackfish you pull up here or do you just poke a tiny hole when it is sticking out of their mouths to get them back down ? How long does that take to heal ? What do they do with a hole in their bladder ? Just curious.

Gotta agree with you Far26. I was ready to buy a ticket to FLA after watching George slay Goliath. Those big ole jewfish are unbeleivable. I loved the fishing show from 10,000 Islands a few years back where that huge Goliath Grouper scared the crap out of host Andy Mill when he put on a mask and fins to have a look at the "big boy". :D Andy looked like a missle being launced from a sub the way he flew back in the boat after that thing started chasing him. It was the size of a VW. tongue.gif LOL Can't wait for this weekend's show George. Thanks for the heads up. I usually watch your show any way but will make sure I don't miss this one. The striper action is probably got you thinking about come back in the fall. We are not too far away from a new striper run in the spring. I for one can't wait much longer to get out and fish. We don't have the nice weather to fish in all year long. Well good luck with the show and mag and we will see you again I am sure about that.
George,
Thanks for the heads up on the Cape May Show, Even though I really don't get a chance to Strip Bass Fish I really enjoy your Shows. When my boat isn't in Cape May I keep it in Staten Island next to a friend of yours Doc Mark Sherman. I told him that one day you guys will have to run offshore with us and check out that Deep Blue Water. Keep up the Great work with your shows. And Thank You for helping all of us Snow Birds pass the winter away! If you go pass my place in Jupiter send up some of that warm air! Hey Ding Tim did plug all charter boats as far as the info it was a home run for the cape may area including anyone in the fish business! Content you have to remember George has a little different style all of his show are about the same lots of good fish catching in different locals, when we do our shows we concentrate on this region and can spend more time on the how to's and locations. Overall it was a good view of our fishery. A 30 minute show is really not enough time to get it all in and Tim did give much more info that was not used due to time constraints. As I said it was an awesome piece for our area, Sure got me itching to get our show back on in april! Great job Tim!!

Just watched the show. Thought it was good that Tim pointed out that he was using larger hooks than most people who do that type of fishing, and that was the reason that the fish were not gut hooked, and could be released unharmed. Shame he didn't piont out that the boga grip was not intended to be used for taking fish out of a net while thrashing on the gunwale. If your gonna release em, lip em. Just curious George, you had both the boga and a glove, why net a fish that is to be released?

02-22-2004, 01:09 PM
I just caught the show and did enjoy it but...
I thought it could of been a little more informative though. It seemed like when George was asking Tim about how to really catch em he was avoiding the answer like it was top secret info. So once I gota agree with Dings comments. ;)
I also found it interesting using the boga and the net but understand if it was a sponsoring issue.
Always nice to see a show done locally. smile.gif
George,
It was a great show, you need to do some more shows up in our area. Just remember even tough I'm a snow bird and own a place in Jupiter and fish a lot in Florida during the winter. I wouldn't trade the fishing that we get up here during the summer months. We've got the Gulf Stream and you can't beat it. Now if we had the same weather as Florida that would make a lot of us happy! Anyway keep up the Great shows. Tim you did great I Loved the little plug in for the Charter Guys! And Slammer I saw you in there a few times! Over all great show! Even though I don't get the chance to go Stripper fishing a lot I picked up some good tips from Tim. Hats off to Tim and Bob from The Ulgy Mug Charters!!!!!!!!!

Ding and Digger as I said its more of a location show about catching fish not a how to. Tim did give lots of info but it was edited out due to the type of show it would take more than an hour for the wealth of info he gave up(I think George kept the hot stuff for himself LOL)

Yeah,
It's like 3 or 4 days of footage they shot! Tim doesn't decide what goes on the tape for the final show! He did well! There is only so mcuh info that you can give out when you are a Charter captain. He did the right thing! ;)
I watched the show this morning...and I hated it....I thought I had cabin fever before I saw it  ....man I'm done now!!!....thank god im headed south this week....what did you guys expect Tim to do...show the chart plotter so you can copy down the numbers???? Great show for the entire area.
His advice about chartering a boat to learn the area is right on. Several years ago my brothers and I purchased a condo in Florida..didnt know the area or the fishing... chartered a boat to learn spots and techniques...Capt. is a personal friend now...he got my brother started in tournament fishing (SKA), and he won his first Pro event this year... he, (Capt Terry LaCoss)was also on ESPN last year winning a Redfish Tourn in Louisiana last year with his son TD...we spent some money but gained a good friend and gained an unlimited amount of fishing info.....just my .02....

Good show guys! Nice to see a piece from Cape May! I am sure Timmy gave more info but the editing tears it all up. I wish they would cut out those stupid ESPN outdoors clips about best bass plugs and stuff. If its not about the type of fishing on that show why show it? I have even seen those clips where it was about hunting dogs and a fishing show was airing. Go Figure. Hope this drums up some business for you charter guys in CM.

Saw the show twice. Best part about the show was the fact of just being able to watch stripers being caught and wishing it was November again.
It was also a great boost to the charter boat industry for Cape May area. But I agree with Diger and Ding that seemed like Tim skirted every direct question, except for the large hooks for chunking issue. I think some of us had expectations we would learn something from the show, and I do not mean numbers, however; this was not the case. You can learn more from reading just 2 articles in the Fisherman Mag-one on chunking and the other on eeling the rips.
Fishlips
02-23-2004, 11:36 AM
It was obvious that Tim did not want to give out any information. It had nothing to do with editing. If it did have to do with editing, then they made Tim look foolish, as he asked him 3 times to lend some knowledge, or give a few secrets and Tim just wouldn't do it, saying that a person new to the area should just charter a boat. Yeah, because we know how charter captains love it when you bring a handheld, or write down numbers. It seemed to me that George was begging for information. If Tim actually gave a few tips and locations and they hit the cutting room floor then shame on George and ESPN. They would hear from me if that's the case.
bubblehead1
02-23-2004, 11:39 AM
It was a great show but agree with the dissenters. Tim semed like a nice guy , mentioning how he learned from others and such, but its the entertainment business, not an ad for charter boats. It was the worst George show I've seen. It made the charter boat guys look petty and cheap and the couple of guys I know in the business are just the opposite.
bubblehead1
02-23-2004, 11:42 AM
Do you think its just a coincidence George's editors chose that footage to run out of 3 or 4 days worth of filming. Every image or word that appears on that tube is there for a distinct and defined reason. The choice of airing that footage gives insight into how George wanted to portray Tim. Unfair. Damn right. But who ever said it was supposed to be fair. This is big$ business.

What are you guys complaining about? I still don't see why some people think fishing information is owed to them.
I enjoyed watching the show. It was great to see our little part of the world on national TV, our striper fishery is one of the best around.
I guess types of bait, rigs, and general fishing areas aren't helpful to any of us? Get a clue and get out and learn yourself or be prepared to pay someone for what they know.
Great job on the show guys, keep up the good work.

I watched the show at 6:30 this morning. It was good as far as fishing shows go. Tough to cover the DBay chunk scene and rips in fifteen minutes of film.
As far as location, heck I can tell everyone to go to sixty foot slough.
Tim clearly stated that he doesn't just drop anchor anywhere, but instead looks for bait in the sloughs. That's pretty good advice.
As far as mentioning the charter boats, George's show is meant for at least a regional audience so it would make sense to make viewers aware of the charter fleet available in Cape May. Particularly from Tim's point of view. smile.gif One could even believe that Tim's remarks about charters were "tongue in cheek". smile.gif

I thought it was an entertaining show. Tim did skirt a few direct questions but there are dozens of little spots all over the rips that hold more fish than others. If you want to fish where the Mug fishes just charter the boat or charter the Slammer. He seemed to be everywhere the camera pointed. It didn't look coincidental to me. :D :D Overall, it was a nice advertisement for our great fishery.

That was my point exactly, I was trying to be sarcastic...sorry you missed it, as well as Tim's description of where to fish and what to look for...he was pretty descriptive...tip on using large hooks was also a good one...conditions change from day to day, week to week, find the right structure, and food supply and you find the fish...

Good show. Was wondering why the option of using circle hooks wasn't mentioned.
Ugly Mug 2
02-23-2004, 06:18 PM
Wayne we fish multiple varieties of hooks but do not use circle hooks on striped bass 95% of our hook sets are in the mouth dead sticking no bait runner etc. or held by hand in our expierience we miss more fish especially tournament fishing for bass when using circle hooks. I know your going to quote studies on j vs circles but the way we fish works for us and we rarely gut hook fish ( I am speaaking for Myself,Tim,Jason,Bobby and Frank our team) As most of you can see by the variety of questions and info not answered it would take much more than 30 min to hit all these topics(go back and read my previous posts) If you all would listen carefully Tim did give a good bit of info reason to chunk then rip it, bait choice, hooking method, size of bait, location, slews etc, How to fish the rip, eel presentation, and more and that was all in 16 minutes!!!! Will the mug show have more no doubt but we are a regional show concentrating on our area and dont have to give tour info each and every time as George does to national audiance. I think he did a great job portraying the area and if you want to crucify Tim for one exchange you might as well not notice all the formentioned tips he did give! After all the majority of viewers of this show probably never have caught nor seen a striped bass!

Tims reply to charter a capt is a direct hit on the head yes!
i didnt know the rips from my A%% and just like the rips its a pretty big place :D
but... i spent about 3 years fishing on the miss chris and other boats before with some luck.. getting my own boat .. if it were not for having been on those boats i would have been lost at first and frustrated too the first year out on my boat.. trying to learn all the things about rip fishing chunking etc and ya know what i am still learning ...
say what you will but Tims answer is a good one smile.gif

I thought it was a good show and Timmy did a great job putting George on the meat. The info Timmy gave was very usefull(hook size ect..)He gave enough info like fishing edges and dropoffs. The show was about catching Stripers, not about SPOTS.....Tim,great job,it`s a shame you can`t please everyone.
George as always a top shelf show smile.gif

Just my .02cents.
I agree with Tim. As a Charter Capt from Long Island I too, am reluctant to give up locations.
However, someone earlier said Tim gave up more techiques that ended up on the editors floor. I know that to be true because I attended the SaltWater Seminar in West Islip LI on Sat 02/21/04. Under the discussion of trophy striper fishing, George gave up some of Tim's techniques for baiting with larger hooks and removing gill plates to get more scent in the water as well as some others. But out of respect to Tim and the fact that I payed $45.00 to attend I will devulge no more... But rest assured George went to his hotel room and wrote them down, just as I did.

Tim gave a lot of information that was not shown. I was actually shocked at how much information he was giving out. I went home and wrote notes so I wouldn't forget. He even showed his tournament tricks. Like how he cuts and presents the bunker. How he sets up the rods around the boat.
His advice to charter a boat to learn a new area was not bad advice. If you were there you would have seen they both did a lot of tongue and cheek joking around.
There is a lot of detailed information on the Mug show. I have fished with many of you on the Mug. Tim shared as much information with you as you cared to learn.
Just enjoy seeing Cape May on national television and get ready for the spring.

Wow I'm really suprised at some post on hear, well not realy. If you want more educational stuff take up marine biology.I myself actully learned something just by watching how some of the rods were positioned I never thought it mattered much. Is it only on bumpy days or all the time.

With the fish not feeling any bend in the rod, I would assume that helps...Watch out Tim and Len...I'm joining the tour..LOL JK

Ding If YOUR livelyhood depended on knowing exactly when, where and how to catch fish... And having 100 other boats in YOUR spot would hinder YOUR ability to make money... Would YOU tell everyone everything there is to know on NATIONAL TELEVISION.
I think not... So quit whining.
Capt Tim did a great job on the basic techniques and overall how to locate and catch some fish.
No one should expect any more information than that, especially for FREE!
So maybe you should consider spending a couple of bucks and get some personal lessons from the guy.
Just don't try to dissapear when it comes time to pay the piper at the end of the trip. And hope your reputation doesn't preceed you or you'll have to pay in advance ;)

Here is what I got from the show. They were fishing a rip  If you are drifting get in line and drift with the other boats smile.gif . Go around the fishing grounds to start over  . The fish are traveling along the slough :D . They stated to be sure you are marking fish/bait. They preferred to dead stick  . They were using bunker. They were using large hooks to catch large fish and to help avoid gut hooking. They did just about everything except give the location. I already knew these things and now so do you LOL .Now, you know they were in the rips in the upper part of the rips. Soooooooooo, get a chart and get started. Find some locations and give it a go. I don?t doubt while your out there looking you might just see the Ugly Mug. :D Some people would not be happy unless you were doing all the work for them. I enjoyed the show and you guys did a good job. I will be looking for more shows like this. Thanks and let's see more NJ shows

The only thing a few of us are saying is that if they spent 3-4 days out there and Tim shared al ot of info, which he does very well on the other show, then why did Poveromo choose to leave in the exchange between them, when it seemed like he was pulling teeth to get some info? If it is as you say, he would be getting a phone call from me. If anyone got their March Sport Fishing and didn't read Tred's column yet, it relates to what we are talking about here(as self promoting and pompous as he is, loves to tell you the nice things he does) They should probably let his ex-wife do the column one month.

Re: The bunker stomp. In case you didn?t know, when doing the stomp, be sure you come straight down on the noggin or there is a good possibility of the noggin becoming air born or of you going on you?re a**. That was not mentioned at the seminar. All right guys I have to add my 2 cents in and I never get a chance to get out for Strippers. Over all I thought the show was good. And even though I don't fish for Strippers, I picked up some good tips and information from both George and Tim. I think that everyone is for getting that the show is only a half an hour long. When you really break it down if you got 20 minutes out of it you were lucky. If your looking for more information pick up some books or else do what Tim said. Spend some of that money and go out one day on a charter because that will be the best money that you'll ever spend. These guys know what there doing and the time that you spend with them will help your fishing skills for years to come! I'm not a Charter Boat but if I want to learn something I charter one for a day or weekend. Anyway that's my 2 cents Now since you read this post and you fish for Strippers how about helping Phil, John and the kids out by sending $20.00 dollars in for the Bass Fund, If times are tough for you send what ever you can. And if you can't do anything this time take a kid fishing that will also help! All of this will go a long way!
Thanks for Your Help!

Key points:
1. Great to see Cape May on National TV
2. Chunk bunker or drift eels
3. Use big hooks not to damage or catch big fish
4. Utilize a guide
5. The world will not end if we catch a few less stripers than the next guy.

Hi Bass Barners:
I just wanted to thank everyone for watching the show and also the nice comments.
As far as my covering specific areas, Tim did threaten me with bodily harm if I revealed his spots. However, seeing how I have him by at least six-inches in height and about 50-pounds - plus the fact that prior to this trip I had "warmed up" with a 143-pound wahoo and a 250-pound Goliath Grouper - I didn't take his threat seriously. However, when he broke down and cried like a baby, I caved in. I couldn't stand to see a grown man act like that. ONLY KIDDING!
The objective of the show was to focus on the chunk and rip fishing for stripers off Cape May, discuss techniques, and show why this is such a strong fishing destination. Since the show aired, I've been swamped answering e-mails.
Once again, it was a fun trip. I'll be back in Jersey this season shooting an episode for my 2005 series.
Thanks for the support guys!

George Great show. Guys its like anything else the more time you spend on the water the better your get. Just remember fish like structure and understanding what the currents do and what impact it has on the fish feeding and bait fish will help you allot.
Just my 2 cents
