keeping bloodworms alive

Hi, I finally found a local supplier for bloodworms at a good price ($0.25 each), and I am thinking about buying a bunch of them and trying to keep them alive over the summer. Any tried and tested methods of keeping them, maybe in a fish tank or similar method? Any help would be appreciated as I do not know if I will be able to get them on a regular basis unless I buy in bulk and try to keep them alive. Thanks for any help!

Spray them with saltwater once a day and keep in refrigerator --should last couple of weeks if you have them in grass

And make sure you put a newspaper under the bag. If you don't they'll get too cold and stink up the joint!

You can't really do what I think you're trying to do. You can only get about 14 days ot of them.

Here's bow we do it...

When you use them, save the grass. Less worms in more grass survive much loinger.

Don't leave any broken pieces in the bag, they rot, killing the rest of the worms.

Keep them col so they don't eat each other, but not too cold or they will freeze.

A gallon ziplock (or several) is excellent for storage, wrap in a couple of layers of newspaper to keep it from getting too too cold.

Don't put them on the bottom shelf of the fridge either (too cold).

Flip them over daily so they don't all bunch up on top of one another.

We never sprayed them with water but I would guess if you did you'd better get it from a creek or somewhere. Mixing salt into tap water wouldn't work very well what with all the chlorine and such.

Wish I could tell you how to save them longer than a week or two, as does every tackle shop on the east coast.

Thanks for the advice, should make my investment last a little longer (hopefully i will run out of bait my first trip though!).

Just curious, what is the going price for bloods from baitshops in the US, and how big is the largest bloodworm you guys have seen? We had one that was about 2.5 feet long last week!

If you realy want to keep them alive you need to make a bin (big) and fill it with mud put the bloodworms in and put some seawater ontop of the mud about a foot or two of water should do and drain and refill every six hours. or you could just buy what you need when you need it but the above works a friend of mine in maine who was a wormer used that trick to sell off his worms only when the price was high

i keep my in a covered bowl of saltwater just saltwater keep them in fridge also had them last for over 2 months.

Thanks for all the advice guys but i guess my bloodworm supplier isnt that reliable. I sent an email saying that i needed them on the weekend, got a response asking the day and time i wanted to get them and no response :(

Had some good luck on cooked prawns though!

Does anyone catch there own worms in New Jersey?? I know there around just never payed much attention to them. Does anyone catch there own sandworms??

I find them while flipping rocks catching green crabs behind OC. Never found any bigger than about 5 inches.
