My daughter, who LOVES striper fishing, asked me to help out at a fresh water fishing outing for her fifth grade class. I reluctantly agreed, to make her happy, and hoped for the outside chance for a good time.
I showed up at 7:30am to help out and was assigned to tent#3.
I soon found out that this event was sponsored by Stafford Township P.D(DARE) and NJ Dept of fish and wildlife. We were set up at Manahawkin Lake and there were six tents set up around the lake. Each tent had its own "theme".
#1 Touch and feel fish that are in the NJ lakes
#2 The truck from the hatchery was there expaining to the kids how they stock fish in the fresh water areas
#3 Fresh worms and brand new fishing rods(from NJ dept of fish/wildlife). We instructed the kids on baiting the hook and casting. The catching of fish was an added bonus
#4NJ Dept of F&W instructer showing all the gear needed to fish in our lakes and streams ( waders etc..)
#5Another fishing area on the lake for the kids to hook up.
#6 A brief talk from a DARE officer explaining the reason for DARE.
I cant tell you how much fun I had with these kids. To see the looks on their faces when they hooked up a sunny or a pickerel was priceless.
I actually sat with my daughter on a towell on the beach and had lunch with her fifth grade friends and shared fish stories of the day.
I cant thank the Stafford Twp PD, NJ dept of fish and wildlife and the Stafford Twp schools enough.
I never liked fresh water fishing ....but this fishing memory will last a lifetime. I HIGHLY recommend this with your kids school.
The best day on the water without my own rod!!!!
