View Full Version : Cape May Rips
Are the Cape May Rips to rough for a 13' Whaler on a calm day? I suspect they are but I have never been down there so I don't know how bad it is.

I'd go with someone with a little more experience in the rips and more boat. See what it's like & decide for yourself. Jump on an open charter.

Today you could have been there in a kayak. But that's rare
Thanks for the info guys. I figured the water is to big for my boat but I was hoping for the best.

It definitely depends on the day and the rip that you're fishing. I have seen small aluminum boats with tiller outboards down there on some days! That's a little scary, though!
Anyhow, like some others have said, jumping on an open boat charter and checking the rips out first hand is definitely a good way to go! That way, you get a feel of how to fish the rips, what rips are larger than others, and you can make your own judgement about whether or not your boat would be able to handle it. We run open boat charters on the Adam Bomb II, and can accomodate up to four guys, depending on the day. If you'd like, feel free to give me a ring at (609) 602-6834 and I'll get you set up.
Good luck in your decision, and maybe we'll see you out there!

Like they said it depends on the day, and the tide. The rips on an outgoing may be nice with a NW then the incoming and your screwed then once you get out of there you have to deal with the inlet. The same goes for the SW incoming will be nice and outgoing will bite you then again the inlet to deal with.
You can get good fishing in with that boat just outside the inlet, up the beach off wildwood and in tight in the rips at 2nd street, ephs and just off the gun mount. The bay side you have the concrete ship and a few nice locations areound there with some very visable rips. Don't forget the back waters also.

Abou ten years ago I took my 18ft. aluminum Starcraft into the rips, but as has been said before, I had to pick my days. It can get ugly out there in a hurry...Gene

You may survive the day but you have to ask yourself. Do you want to spend more time watching for waves or fishing?
I would put that in up by Fortescue and fish the sloughs and shoals in the upper bay. That's where the fish are headed right now anyhow and you are sitting at the neck of the funnel.

We fished the rips in a 17 whaler for years. It can be done but pick your days and stay close. experience is the key. You could always beach it if you had to.
Just keep you eyes on the rips and stay behind the wheel and for Gods sake stay away from the big wave at Prissy wicks. It will eat you up.

I've seen some real close calls at what I call and have it named on my GPS as the Bad Water at Prissy. If I were you, I'd start fishing and learning the back waters of Cape May, you have plenty of boat for that, and there's plenty of fish(on the right tide, moon phase and such) Good luck and tight lines, fishpole
