I have a friend, let's call him Bob, who suffers from motion sickness - car, boat, etc. I finally got Bob to go striper fishing in the rips on Saturday. I loaded him up on dramamine and he ate virtually nothing during the day. The rips weren't that bad on Saturday and he was OK for 3 hours or so. Then, he started feeling badly and was unable to fish the rest of the day. My question, is there anyone who has a similar problem and a solution? I think Bob has tried bracelets and patches. What else can he do?

Ginger pills work the best. Eat too, just no grease, eat dryer food, no oil, mayo, etc....
Ginger settles your stomach, you can take 2 before you go out.
Good Luck Bob.

Should call him "Upchuck", not Bob. I've found if you put them on the wheel, drive the boat, they'll feel better sometimes. Warm weather a dip overboard helps too. Get him out more often, don't fear the sickness, work at getting used to the imbalance.
dont go in cabins or look at the bottom of the boat keep an eye on the horizon at all time when feeling bad i am an recovering sea sick boat owner.DONT GO OUT WITH A HANGOVER OR FEELING BAD i am better now

Ken,
Two suggestions, Trans Dermal Scopolamine is a patch which is applied several hours before sailing and will help somewhat. It is a prescription medication and can cause drowsiness and dry mouth.
I read an article in "The Fisherman" several years ago which stated that motion/sea sickness is largely related to gastric reflux and that types of medicines call proton pump inhibitors (PPI's) help tremendously. They are meds like Nexium, Protonix, Aciphex, Prilosec and Prevacid. Prilosec is available over the counter and is generally well tolerated. Unfortunatly for the best effect they need to be taken for several days before sailing as opposed to "as needed".
A patient of mine had such bad sea sickness that it severely limited his fishing. He tried the scopolamine, it helped a little but after He started taking Nexium for reflux he didn't even need the scopolamine any more. ;)
I hope this helps.
If not, buy a 10 foot pole and some chest waders for Him for Christmas. :D

The patch is the best! Also an empty stomach will make you sick eat pretzels or some kind of bread, anything that will absorb the acid in the stomach!

I was told by some doctors that Dramamine works best if you take it the day before fishing and again the morning of. Needs time to equilibrate in your body before it works best. They say the second day you don't get tired like on the first day. Also...by all means eat food and keep hydrated. I like soda and salty pretzels when I'm hungry. Salt helps for some reason. Don't go on the boat drunk or you'll get sick and don't eat a greasy breakfast the day of or the dinner before. The grease will make you puke if you have a week stomach.

The only things that help me is the patch and crackers. I get seasick easily, and that seems to be the only things that help me. The acid reflux meds seem like a great idea. Good luck

THE FIRST THING I RECOMEND IS, ABOUT 2 HRS PRIOR EAT A NICE GREASY CHEESE STEAK, SO GREASY THE ROLE IS DICUSTINGLY SOGGY, CHASE THAT DOWN WITH A 12 PACK OF THE IMPORTED STUFF [ OLD MILWAUKEE], THEN TOP THAT OFF WITH A COUPLE CREAM FILLED DONUTS AND IF YOUR RUNNING A BOAT WITH DEISELS, KEEP HIM IN THE BACK OF THE BOAT RIGHT ON TOP OF THE FUMES .
NA, SERIOUSLY- FOOD AND WATER IS THE KEY !!, SNACK THE ENTIRE TIME OUT THERE, EX: CRACKERS, PRETZELS, WATER OR GATERAIDE, SOMETIMES DOSNT MATTER WHAT YOU DO, JUST GET SICK.

Put a hat on Bob's head, that'll give him a artifical horizon. Alot of folks on my boat also have found the wrist bands that have a little pimple of plactic that puts a pressure point just above the wrist to help. like everyone else: good food, good rest & hydration before they go.

That minty motion ease stuff that they sell at boat shows- that you apply behind both ears works wonders on anyone I have applied it on.

The Relief Band actually works. It is the only remedy that I have seen that will help after someone is already sea sick. I have been sea sick twice when it was pretty rough and using the Relief Band stopped the progression from feeling sick to the upchuck stage. I keep three of these things on the boat and tell everyone new that if they start feeling sick to say something. The Relief Band only failed when I had 3 bands and 4 people getting sick.

I have used Dramamine, Bonine, scop patches, rubberbands and none has worked for the severe case. The only thing that is guaranteed to minimize or delete all together is the Relief band ( the watch).I have used the watch many times for charters and it is amazing how someone can be sick and you put it on, turn it up and in minutes the sea sickness is drastically reduced. then eating and fluids get you back all the way. My better half has fished many times with me. Stay in the bay in 5 footers no problem. Go into the ocean and 1 mile off in 1-2' swell and its turn around. Found out the one time she got sick real bad offshore she started to get panic stress as we entered the ocean. I could watch her change in minutes. So there are 3 kinds of sea sickness. Motion, diesel fumes, and panic attacks. The motion and panic can be beat by the wztch but diesel the watch only keeps them from throwing chum. If buying the relief band look around. Their are alot of places well over $100. i found one for $35. There are several different bands too. I didnt realize this till I went to their web site. Good luck
