Hello, I just wanted to keep everyone interested in the FLW Striper Tour posted. I am down in Englewood, FL and we just had the second FLW redfish tournament of the year. I had a chance to talk to Charley Evans a little about it and he says that Bill Carson has been named the Striper tour director. They are in high gear to get this thing rolling and expect to have the first tournament sometime in May or June. It looks like it's going to be all artifical. Everything you need to know about it,dates, places, rules will be published and put on the website in a couple weeks. I'll be heading back to LBI next week to get the boat ready. Hope to see you all soon.

The one thing that's missing in those Redfish tours is the excitement of people catching BIG fish. Every redfish looks the same...all just below the slot size. BORING!!! How can you have a contest and not allow the methods it takes to land BIG fish? Sounds like a way to make it easier for the redfish guys to compete with the striper guys. Heaven forbid they learn how to target BIG fish. I think T.C. had it right...you can't buy bunker at Walmart!!! Sounds like the redfish guys are afraid of the competition of the nothern fishermen.
this is the info that was emailed to me by the tournament director, my head started hurting half way thru it, it's "different"
They will be some thing like this:
- Slot of 28"-34" (measured to fork) live release format
- Artificial only (tube rigs OK with only one bait in array containing no more that 3 hooks, u- rigs same rules apply, casting baits same rule; no live bait trailers or teasers)
- trolling allowed
- 19' or greater boat size
- Captain plus 1 - 3 team members make a team
- Dead fish penalty 10% deduction for dead fish's weight
- No VHF restrictions
- Polygraphs will be and can be given to multiple places
- boundaries set and announced at Captains meeting
- one day events with top 25 in each event qualifying for National Championship
- 3 day National Championship ( full field 1st 2 days then top 5 for final day with TV coverage)
- All tem members must be members of FLW
Tight lines,
Bill Carson

Sounds like a 10 to 15lb fish who want's to see that. If its lures so be it, still want to see 30 40 50lb slobs brouht back alive and released alive and so would the crowd.

Sounds crazy to me until I fished down Fla this past February, the Sebastian INlet area and let me tell you with a 2oz bucktail we tied into some monster sized reds, at night mind you but I would never have thought in a million years that I could land a citation sized red on an artificial...

I would think that the purpose of the 28" - 34" rule is to not kill the big cows. Not everyone is going to have the capability to bring in a striper that can be released alive. It's not a bad format except for the artificial part. Another thing that is interesting is that they are going to announce the boundaries at the Captain's meeting. How do you plan your fishing around that?

People that are complaining about size and the use of live bait --- you're missing the whole point ....
The FLW is a huge success. The Redfish tourneys are top notch. The reason for the success are the rules they put in place.
Again with the --- "New Jersey fish limit's stink because we can't catch any fish larger than 28 inches" to be followed by, "What? a size limit? How can I be restricted to only fish 28 to 34 inches, that's not fair"
These rules stop the "I caught the one huge striper so I win". I'm a huge fan of live bunker .. but what's wrong with putting a little effort into using artificials?
My beef would be boundries because I can't work the same water as these power boats .. but that inself would be a challange. I hope I get a chance in this tourney ...

Rumour has it $50K at the FLW stop up here in the Raritan bay area.
I bet a lot of folks will forget about the artificial only rule if they are offering money like this. I know it won't bother me at all if I don't use live bait with that kind of money up for grabs.
We really can't compare the two tournaments. The FLW is doing good things with their rules as they are promoting catch and release as well as trying to keep the big cows in the water.
To be honest I feel the ASA has not thought out their decision to go to an aggregate weigh-in in Maryland. This means everyone will weigh in a fish on Day 1 no matter what size and hope to get the big one the next day. With the single fish weigh-in rule normally in place people only weigh in if they can beat the top fish.

I think you do have to sign up with FLW. Sure would be nice to get the full details. Their website is confusing to me and I don't see anything about the Striper Tour on it?

From News Reports
BENTON, Ky. ? In response to what they termed as overwhelming demand, FLW Outdoors has announced it will launch the largest, most prestigious and highest-paying striped bass tournaments in history beginning this summer.
?The tournament-fishing landscape has changed dramatically since we introduced the Wal-Mart FLW Tour in 1996 and made $100,000, $200,000 and even $500,000 paydays standard at the top ranks in bass fishing,? said FLW Outdoors Chairman, Irwin L. Jacobs. ?In fact, next year we are prepared to pay the Forrest Wood Cup champion $1 million. FLW Outdoors is now creating the same excitement and opportunities in striped bass angling as we have in bass, walleye, redfish and kingfish angling. Our anglers know that no matter what fish species they prefer, they will be competing for the absolute most money available in the sport. Now, beginning in May, we will do the same for striped bass anglers.?
FLW Outdoors has been exploring and planning the expansion of its saltwater tournament offerings into striped bass for more than a year and originally considered launching the tournaments in 2007. That timetable was moved up, however, due to insatiable demand for quality tournaments along the Atlantic coast from Virginia to Maine.
?We have always tried to listen to what the anglers are asking for, and then we try to accommodate them,? Jacobs said. ?It?s really that simple. In this case, our research showed incredible demand for high-paying, high-profile professional striped bass tournaments to serve anglers in the Northeast. I took that information to several prospective sponsors and they were thrilled with the opportunity. We are not prepared to announce all of the players just yet, but I can tell you Wal-Mart, Hyrda-Sports, Wellcraft and Seaswirl have already signed on, as well as several other big corporate sponsors.?
Taking a page out of its successful redfish and kingfish playbooks, FLW Outdoors will lucrative payouts, plus cash bonuses for Hyrda-Sports, Wellcraft and Seaswirl boat owners. Moreover, top finishers from every tournament will also advance to a no-entry-fee championship.
Complete details, including purses, dates, locations and registration information, will be released in the coming weeks.
Hyrda-Sports, Wellcraft and Seaswirl boat owners will have priority entry into the new FLW Outdoors striped bass tournaments, which are likely to fill quickly once registration opens.
For more information about FLW Outdoors and its tournament programs, call (270) 252-1000 or visit www.flwoutdoors.com. (http://www.flwoutdoors.com.) Many of America?s largest and most respected companies support FLW Outdoors and its tournament trails.

I cant believe you guys are complaining this is a proven trail that attracts tons of fisherman sells tons of tackle and boats and that means real sponsors paying real dollars! They are for real! Ive always liked the slot limit events it saves the big mommas and the best anglers still win!

Sandy Hook Scenario
125 tournament boats all trolling Romers Shoal in Sandy hook along with another 200 New Yawker boat guys not fishing the tournament. That should be a lot of fun.
Or
Cape May Scenario
The rips traffic and trollers.... Need I say more about that? How about trolling around hundreds of guys anchored up in the 60ft and 20ft sloughs?
I may be off base here, and maybe the FLW will not allow trolling but they do in the Kingfish Tour and they don't in their Redfish series. Kingfish allow bait, Redfish don't.

I enjoy watching the redfish tour on ESPN every Saturday and some of the guys I plug the back with have always discussed how much fun it would be if someone came up with a tournament similar to the redfish tour but with stripers as the target. After reading some of the forecasted rules that were posted, I think it will be a great success, especially with the true slot and penalties for dead fish. I look forward to watching it and perhaps someday participating.
Oh by the way, if you don't like the FLW suggested tournament join ASA.

Really nice pics. Hey Bass ackwards, there are a few bigger grade fish around on the Flats, they've been caught on bait....however, it's been too dang windy for anyone to get out most of this week. Nothing huge reported caught yet.

Guys,
The Redfish tour they let those guys run 70-80 miles. With that type of scenario, you wouldn't have to be confined to the bay. An all artificial tourny requires a little more homework and takes a bit more skill than waiting for a fish to follow your chunk trail to your hooks.
I am looking forward to fishing both tours this year and probably in a Hydra sport..(any extra prize $$ helps)

I am looking forward to trying to slow troll eels at cape may tournament. I am sure that i will have the fresh bunker just in case. I am planning on it being fun this year trying find big fish up north. When i was in high school i had alot zero's. I just hope my learning curve for catching stripers away from the chesapeake is real quick. I hope you doing well see you in cape may.
