Gave it a shot last night behind margate. Was hot as hell. Lotsa little blues, nothin else. Had some small bass slurping along a sod bank, but they were playin difficult to get. While paddling in the dark I scared something very large out of the shallows:eek: , scared the poop out of me.
TONS of bait. peanuts, silversides, needles. Just nothin but blues eatin

Got some large blues and got absolutly trucked by a large thresher under the bunker. All about a mile or so off the beach. Going back tommorow with the heavier stuff and some steel leader...I wanna get one close enough to at least take a pic.

KeysKid--- glad to hear you got into some fish....were you down in the SJersey area, or did you trek up North? With the summer doldrums in effect, I want to get out front more....took the yak out front of Ocean City last weekend AM; casted into the breakers for some king fish but came up empty handed.....thanks------Mike

I just rigged a yak yesterday for a guy at the shop. He went out this morning first time, first cast and hooked into a 4 to 5 foot brown shark in the bay behind brig. Towed him around for an hour. Needeless to say the guy is hooked on yak fishing.

No, my bud had to bail last minute,I didnt feel like making a trip like that alone again...went flukin' instead and had em up to 7lbs. All nice quality fish. Only a couple throw backs all day. Wasted a lot of time reeling up some big doggies...

i was out on friday (aug 4th) and dumped in near the welcome center in ocean city. i found some deep holes in the area and had some luck with a few flounder. none of them were big, but i was catching so it made for a good day.
i saw a bass pop on top of the water and skim across the surface on its side. it popped up three different times and the last time it must have skimmed on top of the water for a good 10 feet. it was only about 20 feet away from me so i got a good view and it was pretty cool.
i tried different set ups (bucktails, bucktail with squid, bucktail with minnow/squid, weakfish rig with a minnow, weakfish rig with a minnow/piece of gulp bloodworm, flounder feathers with a minnow/piece of gulp bloodworm). the most successful rig seemed to be the white flounder feather rig with a minnow and a 1/2 inch or smaller piece of gulp bloodworm.
the water seemed to be warmer than it was last week when i was out. the weather was beautiful and i couldn't convince myself to leave. i dumped in around 9am and didn't come out until just before 4pm.

Put in near Somers point with Librarian on Saturday in am. We caught blues at the bridge, 1 keeper flounder, couple of doggies and a sea robin.
Flounder seamed to like the Gulp! Weather was great.

Tried my hand at kayak fishinf for the first time the other day off of LBI. I had a blast, but was far from efficient. I managed to land one small blue, but hooked into something big which snapped my line. My main questions are what kind of rods and line are you all using? My main targets will be fluke, bass, blues, and weakies. I was using bucktails, SPRO, and Fin-S and some squid Gulp. I also was curious about how to remove hooks without bringing the fish into the kayak, my kayak is a fairly small sit on top. Also where can you get rod holders to mount on a kayak, and how do you transport a keeper sized fish back to the beach? Thanks for any input.

Barrell,
That guy you refer to in your post is me - long time Bass Barner - rookie Yaker! :) Thanks for all your advice and for rigging my Yak up for fishing.
Hersh, go to Barrell to get your Yak rigged up for fishing. He did a great job and spent a lot of time explaining stuff to me as well. His shop The Root Beer Barrell (Yak and Surf shop) is in Brigantine. As to your question on transporting fish - Barrell and I spent a lot of time discussing this. We agreed you don't really want to keep your fish on a stringer this time of year as the water is too warm. Flounder and other fish you will keep for dinner really should be iced immediately. Barrell recommended that some guys are using soft pack coolers. I went to several stores (Target, Dick's, etc) and really couldn't find one in the size I needed. I wound up buying a pretty cool bag at Sport Authority that is called a Marine Xtreme bag. It's not really a cooler but it is made of a heavy water proof material suitable for Marine environments. It also has a reinforced bottom. I tested it just this morning and was in the Yak for about 3 hours. Two bags of ice were just slightly melted when I was finished up. I think for most outings (3 or 4 hours) when the heat is not extreme this bag will be perfect. It has loops on the bottom of the bag to allow for easy attachment to the Yaks grommets with a bungie cord.
Oh by the way it was VERY windy this morning and made for some tough fishing. Don't you know on my way back to the truck I decide to try one last drift and start banging weakfish literally right in front of where I launched. They were on the small side but it was a lot of fun. 1/2 oz jig head with Gulp shrimp were the ticket. I think I could have caught a few dozen but I got tired from fighting the wind. By the way,I caught the Brown on the same rig - on a 6 1/2' lite St. Croix rod - it was a blast!
I'll be out there again tomorrow morning (and maybe tonight) depending on what the clan has planned.

I know sams sells those insulated ,zippered beach bags. But it sounds like what you found is gonna work just fine.

I hammered the weakfish the last two days in the back. This morning I honestly lost count how many fish I caught - and I missed just as many. Fished from about 7AM to 11AM (incoming) and caught the whole time. These were small fish -didn't measure but I'm guessing 12" to 14" was the norm. (all released). I also caught a nice keeper flattie as well - that one came home.
Gulp twisty tail pink and chartruse minnows on a 1/2 oz jig head was the ticket. I'm loving this Yak fishing thing. http://www.acfishing.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif I'll be out again tomorrow, and maybe early Monday AM. Heading home late Monday morning to wrap up a great two week vacation in Brigantine.

Fished O.C. early This morning.weather was great, fishing was not. Big zero on all the bridges.except for sea bass. Bad day yak fishing is better than a good day doing yard work.......

Went out Saturday AM behind Stone Harbor and met Youngbob (I think???) It was nice meeting you guys.
I wound up getting 2 stripes (15, 25"), 3 Flounder (2 @16 and 1- 17 1/2) and some blues.
Sunday went back out in the AM and wound up with 5 flounder (all short), some blues and a couple of schoolie Striper. I landed 2 flounder on my own high low rig at the same time. Pretty cool. Gulp shrimp took all of the flounder, plastic paddletail took the stripers and blues.

Brent,
It was nice meeting you. Sounds like you had a good day. Tom and I headed down to the beach but the wind was strong and the seaweed was everywhere, needless to say we got skunked! We went back to the steps just as the sun was setting to throw some poppers but didn't have any luck.
Talk to you later,

hersh, i by no means am an expert or anything when it comes to yak fishing. i figure some of the other guys here might have some better advice, but i thought i would throw this at ya.
i have a small sit on top as well which is pretty much a surf yak that i use for fishing as well.
if i go into the ocean to fish then i pack very light with some rigs, bait, pair of pliers, and a piece of rope for a keeper and put into the small hatch located between my legs. the butt of my rod fits into the scupper holes, so that's my rod holder. it's a pain getting through the surf with anything more. also, let's just say i haven't had to worry about needing ice to keep a fish, lol!
if i go into the back then i pack a little heavier. i had an old crabbing net that fits into the scupper holes. i put some duct tape up a few inches from the end to keep it from going all the way through the hole. i scoop the fish in the net, take the hook out as the fish is in the net and then dump the net over the side to release the fish. the last thing i need is a jumpy bluefish or flounder flopping around between my legs looking for something to bite:eek: i use the hatch between my legs for my water bottles and minnows. the minnows are kept in one of those oyster containers (aka - chinese food container) and they will last all day without water. i wear a fishing vest (you know the fresh water vests/tan vests) on top of my pfd. the vest carries all my fishing gear. like you, my yak is small and has only one hatch and no other storage space to put anything, so the vest works for me. it's pretty much a 'hack' setup, but it works without attaching things to the yak and not being able to use it for the surf as well.
one other thing i might add......is for a rod i would look for one with a shorter butt end. it seems tough to use, especially when working lures. the longer butt seems to get in the way while reeling in as you're in a sitting down position.
i just thought i would throw some ideas at ya since i have a smaller, sit on top yak as you.

Thanks for the advice guys. My kayak doesn't even have a hatch unfortunately, but I like the ideas you all have. I've gotta go out and get one of those bags. I'll let you know how things go and hopefully have a good report for ya.

You can't get a boat into water that this Yak goes into!
Same versatility as any yak.
Not as fast and as easy to paddle as other yaks but with the trolling motor who cares!

A customer of mine was fishing last night at the OC toll bridge. He left at 4am but forgot to pick up his Hobie mirage drive. He left it on the edge of the parking area. If anyone found it , please get a hold of me.

Fished the end of the incoming and most of the outgoing this am at Corsons. Caugth a mess of small blues on plastics around sunrise. There were several herring mixed in as well. Tried drifting for flounder and could not keep the small sea bass and king fish off the baits. There is a ton of bait in the water.

worked the structure behind OC friday night trying to troll up some bass since it worked so well the last few times (double digits about 4 weeks ago, 5 two sats. ago, all shorts). Outgoing tide, sun was setting, no bass for me but plenty of 16 to 20 inch blue fish on light tackle spinner, man do they fight for smaller fish, what a blast. :D
no bass no weakies no herring but plenty of bluefish

Out last night 6-10 behind NWW incoming tide. Bait everywhere blues busting the surface around some bridges but I could not get them to hit anything I had. Poppers, metal and palstic. Did manage 1 small sea bass jigging around the bridges with a bunch of misses on a teaser and one blue on a teaser above a kastmaster. Really nice night otherwise. Oh well try again tonight!
