Wondering how a fishfinder rig is best used. I have the rigs but never got a good a good explaination on how to fish it properly. Last time down i fished Reeds Beach caught a ton of croakers(20 plus!). Great day fishing in the rain, but i guess the fish don't care!Stripers should be arriving soon,i hope!

Fishfinder rigs usually means any rig that allows the hook to be pulled through a clip that holds the weight without actually pulling the weight.
Popular with chunking rigs. Allows a fish like a striper to grab a big chunk of bait and swim off with little resistance. Some fish will spit a baited hook if they feel pressure from a heavy weight.
These work great with large baits so the striper has time to get the bait and hook all the way into it's mouth. Not so great if you are using a small or very soft bait. Allowing a fish to run line this way usually results in gut or deep hooked fish.
Hope that's what you were looking for.

i always use a fishfinder when fishing from the beach.
with a sputnic.... when the fish hammers the bait and takes off the sputnic put the pressure on them and the circle hook does its job.
have yet to gut hook a bass!

Are you to leave the bail open when fishing like this? Or close bail but leave slack in line? Thanks to everyone who answers my rookie questions!

if a spinning rod is used for chunking with a fish finder rig you can either leave the bail closed with loose drag or buy a clip from cabellas that attached to the lower rod. the clip holds the line just tight enough for you to keep the bail open without the line running out. when the fish hits the line pulls of the clip. you can then let the fish run and start reeling to close the bail. the other option would be to fish with cirle hooks the bail closed and drag set to your liking.

A rubber band can serve the same purpose as the aforementiond cabelas clip. wrap it around the but of the pole and stick the line in it in a u shape. it will hold the line tight, but a hit will pull it free. Willie in NEPA
