In Greensboro NC today, I saw at a super market "Wild Caught Striped Bass" $12.99 lb. There were cuts of the fish similiar to how a salmon would be presented and there was a filet (side) of a about 20 inches long below the fish pieces.

Is this caught in NC? Freshwater or Salt?

I have gone to this supermarket for years and have never seen striped bass offered. The counters were busy, so I did not have a chance to talk to someone there.

Thanks!

Greensboro NC
Greensboro: my guess would be fresh water, but I don't think those hybrids get big enough to give you a 20-inch filet. Doubt it was caught in NC saltwater this time of year with the water temps down there. Maybe shipped from Maryland - they have a huge commercial bass fishery.

There are a lot of that size caught off the coast of NJ. But usually earlier in the year or in the fall. I'm going to the Chesapaeke Hoopers Island, next week for Stripers (Rock Fish) down there. The minimum is 22" this time of year, so I'll bet the big ones come from NJ and North

Marylands portion of the Chesapeake Bay has an 18" minimum size for Stripers during the summer months. 2 per man over 18, with only one of those over 28".

I believe they are pen raising stripers now. That doesn't cover the "wild caught" part but who knows. Where is it leagl to catch and sell stripers these days?

It is still leagel to sell stripers in NC I believe. I have been to a couple markets recently and have seen fish being marketed as stripers and they are either hybrids, or white bass. Both of which are in fresh waters around here and a lot of people don't know how to tell the difference between a striper and a hybrid.

As far as the wild cought striped bass it is VERY likely it was a striper cought outa Badin, Highrock, or Jordan. Thay are the closest lakes with the highest striper populations around Greensboro. Keeper size of landlocked stripers are regulated by lake and I believe 18" is standard. They are stocked fish in the large impoundments. And for the record there are 100% stripers not just hybrids in fresh water lakes down here. Some grow to 20lbs ot a bit over but not much bigger.

legal commercial market in Maryland as well. Gill net season in winter and Hook-n-line season in summer. Striped bass is available in every seafood market, retail outlet and restaurant pretty much anywhere in the state.

Gilly-

This special was at the Fresh Market, I know a buyer there and they probably bought these fish for all of their stores, they range from Chicago to New Orleans and soon to my hometown Allentown Pa.

Thanks

Probably wasn't High Rock - I haven't seen a striper out of there in years althought there are some around.

"Wild Caught Striped Bass" is a term that alot of restaurants and fish markets use to distinguish a fish from being "Farm Raised". Some say "Wild" fish taste better and others say "farm raised" are safer....who knows.....

NC has a pretty good stock of resident fish. This time of year they catch 30+ inch fish under the oregon inlet bridge at night under hung lights. Just some FYI.

I worked in a restaurant in Philly that served wild bass alot. They have to have a tag of where they were caught, it usually is through there lip. I always knew when the fish were getting close to Jersey by the tags. It used to kill me when they would get a 40lb fish and clean it in front of me.

As for the flavor...wild has flavor...farm raised is bland!
