I was wondering what everyone thought on crab bait, chicken or fish and if anyone lets it rot or close to roten?

I've had success with both, but if I had a choice I would go with Bunker. I never tried to let it rot. I think the natural oil smell from the bunker is enticing enough for the crabs.

i use chicken 1/4s . they hold up better in the traps. i dont let it rot, fresh or thawed out frozen chicken. my comm traps i always use bunker or fish chunks. i crabb at least 15 to 25 trips a summer and have had very good success if i do say so. if i freeze it i will put it in a cooler two days ahead and let it thaw. i would not suggest letting it rot. esp fish , then it will be mush. both will work and good luck with both. the crabs are running big now, but dont be afraid to move and find them. good luck bb

Chicken! I think "fresh" bunker is best, but the chicken holds up better, and easier. Still catch the crabs so..................

I'm not sure the crabs care one way or the other. Personally I prefer fresh bunker.

I'm a chicken necker. At least that's what they used to yell at us when we were crabbing in Maryland when I was a kid. I like chicken better like most have said chicken will last longer.

I soak my chicken in bunker, over night. Best of both worlds.

As a handliner, I use whole Mackerel and Bunker. I just don't gt teh chicken thing:rolleyes:
been using chicken for so long, I don't even think about it. pack of cheap wings or necks and all set for traps or handlines. frozen bunker gets mushy faster and trying it side by side, chicken wins out.

I take both. The bunker oil draws 'em in, and they just love those cheap chicken necks:o

1 side by side comparison and you'll understand. Just let me know when and we can do it.

Depends where. Indian River DE I don't think the crabs know what bunker is because so many use chicken.

I find bunker and mackeral are the best, i think chicken loses its smell after awhile while the bunked stays oily. I have caught crabs on chicken but just not as good.

I always used bunker but for what they charge for one bunker now, I can get a hole package of chicken legs that I can also eat. Chicken for me now.

Crabbing with my father in law for the last 21 years he always uses chicken back and necks. I've used chicken and bunker. My unoffical survey says both will catch crabs but bunker seems to out catch the crabs.

I use chicken thighs and necks they work great. every trip i am catching at least 40 to 60 crabs. Bunkers rots away to quickly.

Both fish and chicken work, but i like using the freshest fish you can find. We use the frames after we clean our fish and freeze them if we don't use them that day. Nothing goes to waste...

Chicken or Fowl necks work best for me. The chicken is easier to find the fowl is a little tougher and cheaper but harder to find. We are chicken neckers in the chessy. I like my crabs like I like my woman big and black.LOL;)

chicken back necks it doesn't matter to them, if u can go to a cleaning station and get some fresh fish. or bunker works but the carcass of just fileted fish works great i've even used catfish and bluefish before and had good results....seven bridges is great this time of year lots of big crabs no weekend warriors and not to many flies

out at turkey point some bunker using guy started giving me tons of advice about crabbing, my wife and I tied up our chicken to the traps while listening to all of the wisdom he had to offer us. We started catching and he pulled up empty traps, the more crabs we caught the less advice we got. It was the best! BTW I like using blue fish too!

Lots of snapper blues in the water. Catch a few and give them a try. Nothing better than fresh/natural bait.

I use mostly bunker. I like the oily slick it gives off, I dont like using chicken because you have to keep changing it, chicken doesnt have that oily residue. I have done so much better with bunker, I had good luck with left over mackeral also.
