What do you guys think is the advantage and disadvantage of chunking for stripers using clams vs. bunker and which do you prefer?

Depends on what they are eat'n, I like clams in the spring when the Drum are around then switch to bunker. The clams work late, in the ocean also. :)

I don't have much experience with fishing in the back bay, but my rule of thumb is to chunk with clams on the clams beds during the fall and with clams in the bay for the spring. I mostly use bunker for the bay in the fall.

if you chunk with clams you get sharks,if you chunk with bunker you get blue fish the choice is yours they both work.louis

in the bay its nothing but bunker. at least where i fish out of fortescue. never had too much luck with the clam up there.

from what I gather DBay is mostly a bunker chunkin mecca and in the SJ back bays its primarily clam. I fish chunk behind Avalon and have never heard of anyone chunking bunker but I was thinking about trying it. Any reason for the difference in chum between DBay and the back bays?

the area I fish, I only chunk bunker when bunker are around using the Noggins. No bunker, I am using clam.

I always wanted to fish D bay using those noggins.

Mostly clams in the raritan bay especially in the spring. Haven't used bunker that much so I stick with what works.

Both are great baits for stripers I personally have found that I have caught bigger fish on bunker, thats not to say clams do not catch big fish. Keep in mind when fishing either of these baits "FRESH" always works the best and makes all the difference.

Moved North to Sandy Hook for the fall run. Will be back in Beach Haven next season.

In jersey, the only time I have been using clams is in very early spring before the bunker show. Then it's nothing but bunker or artificals till Christmas. Plus there free!!!:D
