When the wind backs, like it did Friday, the wind will usually lay down for awhile, which afforded us a great opportunity. We had a nice 8 hour window as the wind clocked counterclockwise from the SW to the NE, and had another calm day to fish. The rods bent well.

Pogonias cromis, aka the bearded grunter, aka Black drum, have enterred the bay to feed on bivalves and spawn. Luckily for us they like the same clams served the same way as do the stripers. The puppy was fun to catch on the light spinning tackle.

At the end of the day, we had a good catch plus released a few to swim again. Have a few dates open if anyone wants to join the fun. smile.gif

Nice catch Capt Harv.
Wish we had the same conditions.
There was no "backing" but the time we got to the bay on Friday afternoon. It was all "fronting" so to speak.

Hope to see you out there soon.

Very nice combo, fellas.

I see you've got your 'A' crew there, Harv, with Ronny and Newsbuoy Billy with you.

So who hooked the Drum? And did it hook itself, or was a firm hookset required on that heavy duty mouth? Reason I ask, I'm still looking for that Big Boomer, in this my 3rd year targeting.

Tom........We had calm seas all day, then around 2 the edge of the next front approached and within 10 minutes the wind was blowing 15 and gusting to 20 out of the East. We had our fill by then and headed home.

Billy....Ronny caught that fish. It was tapping away at the bait, Ron gave it about 20 seconds till he could feel the fish had the bait and set the hook. Drum are funny fish. For the size of them, it is amazing how gently they can take a bait. They have the ability to suck the clams off the hook and spit the hook back out. They apparently learn this behavior when they use their pharyngeal teeth to crush bivalves and spit the shells out, while swallowing the meat.
Lew........Ronny is a young looking grandpa, one heck of a nice guy too.
Gene.......sorry I missed your call. Glad you are finally in the water!
