Started this morning to see the lowest blow out tide I've seen since I been down here 5 years. We barely made it through Tuckerton Creek. The water was disgusting for quite awhile.Looked like coffee, with tons of green and brown gooo mixed in.We made a couple drops before moving out to one of the outer bars where the water seemed a bit better. They started biting around noon, and we wound up with quite a few fish, two of them being slammers 44&42"'s one going past the 30 lb mark.Bait of the day was clam, seems like they don't want anymore bunkers.:D

Anchor up on a bar and wait for them to pass through.I usually fish 2 rods.I try fresh bunker if I can get them, and clams. After the last couple of trips though, seems like they are all clam eaters now.;)

Thats the spirit. I was out late this afternoon and will be out the rest of the week after work. We missed a big one this afternoon. Could not get it turned around. The 320 GT2 was screaming like a scolded dog.

Last Wednesday LBI had an epic beach blitz with over 100 fish caught by some beach boys. And Friday there were some very good reports of multiple bass over 20 caught by boat.

This is really interesting...
I was anchored in the BH inlet an hour before and after the change of tide a week ago. We showed up at the bait store about 3 minutes after they sold the last live spot.
We fished with Live clam, and chunked with frozen bunker. The fish were having none of it.
On the left and right of us they were catching nice sized fish. All on live spot.
Go figure...

Lucky John, that's great. I've never got one that big anchored up with clams. I take it you were in the inlet and not a little out past it? Good stuff.

I replaced that setup with a brand new one:D (Same reel and St Croix)It caught the big one yesterday that tipped the scales at 32lbs and change. They didn't bite as well as Monday, but we whacked them fairly good today.Only thing is they ranged from 22"-36".
Underdog we were on one of the outer bars.Today there was so many other boats there that we only stayed awhile then left to a spot we got them last week.

I was afraid the inlet would be crowding up. Last year got a few weeks in before the masses showed up. Night fishing or finding a spot to rough for most other people might be the ticket:d.
I like lighter tackle, but that makes the bigger fish tougher when anchored up. Fish has to win once in a while.

when you use bunker in the inlet while anchored do you chunk or live-line live bunker?

I chunk my bunkies.I leave a sliver on the noggin and the rest about 3 inches wide. But save that info for next season,go buy some clams now.:)

Got out again late this afternoon. Fished the end of the incoming and the slack tide. Got 2 nice 35 inchers. They both were caught on the swing of the slack tide. Go figure. Out of the 5 fish I have caght recently 3 of the were like cookie cuter fish. They were about 35 inches and between 13 and 15 lbs. I had the same thing last year. Some day I find that bigger fish.:o

Set the anchor out near the outer white wash jsut before sunset and picked up a quick 29 incher. Then nothing for hours other than skates. Moved to slightly deeper water in same area and picked a nice 37 and 33 inch bass. Called it quits around 10 pm. It was real nice out there. Next few days look like bundle up time!!! Hoping to get out again tommorrow night. Keeping an eye on the winds.

Tried it again tonight, only managed 1 bass around 32 inches. Also picked up a spiny and smooth dogfish. So before you grap, look him over real good. Will be out on Saturday and Sunday. I will keep my hears open on channel 9. Dave I was debating on calling you on the fish, but it never really picked up, it was an occasional pick. Tonight, it was nice out there for the first 2 hours, then the tide and wind picked up real strong.

The back has been pretty good Ted, thanks for asking. The rollers have not been a problem for me but the ride back across the bay can be slow.
I have been throwing just the whole clam and just trying to keep them fresh when the fish seem to be hot. Every once and a while I'll throw out a couple fresh cut when it get's a little slower, it seems to help. Keep me posted.

Fished from 7:00 am to 4 pm. One short around 2 pm. Two 33 inchers around 4:00 pm with our last 3 clams. Will try again tommorrow. Frayed Knot, were you out in the inlet, or inside?
Phish4fun, didn't see your post until now. I would not have been much help to you today. Find a sandbar with 6 to 10 feet of water and hope for the best. Anyone of them can produce at any time. Change of tides tend to be the most productive. There are spots in the backwaters as well, but I do not fish in back often. Grassy Channel and Little Beach produce, but you often have to contend with lots of grass.

My good buddy came down for a days fishing. We went out about 830 or so,but I knew we probably should have left the dock around 11-12.Hit C-bar first, got a 21" fish kinda quick and that was it for a long while.Made several drops on different spots and bars.Fish didn't start biting again till I went back to C-bar around 1.Caught a quick 6 fish including 2 keepers. The tide dropped down to 3.5 ft so I picked up an went off to the outer bar.Fish ate from 2-4 when we left for home.
4 keepers 1-38,1-32,1-30,1-28.5
Had 22 fish in total, from 20" an up.Wound up tossing back a few decent size keepers.Looked liked some weather coming into town.
PS I heard they jigged the crap out of them up the beach.Barely keeper size fish.

Got out this afternoon and fished from noon to 4:00 pm. Went directly to my go to spot on the Holgate side of the inner bars and put a 32 inch Bass in the box. Lost one short and released one. Had several taps and quick hits that failed to hook up. I suspect smaller fish that were just grabbing on the run. A few boats around me picked a few as well, but overall it sounded like slow action out there.

I have had the opposite fall experience. Boat gets at least 1 every trip out, but 3 has been highest count. This is partly due to only fishing on the high traffic weekends. Seems like the big count days have been limited to the weekdays with less traffic in the inlet.

That is my problem, I have a new boss who doesn't understand fishing in general, and specifically, striper season/fever. Fish were very hungry, but they were tiny.Lost count, but I had over 25 fish from 17"-26 with the one lone keeper @ 28.Even picked a few on the start of the incoming, but I was done by 1.

Went out today with doubts about conditions.
We caught 9 or 10,but only one keeper 32".Rest were 20-24" fish.
No trouble finding any white water today, more of a problem staying dry.We probably took 4 good hits over the transom,my toes have wrinkles now :o
Talked to Mullica Bob on the radio,he had a decent day as well with more keepers` than we had.

Today's story: "Outgoing good/Incoming bad". Lucky John you must have known something cause I looked up you were gone and so was the action. Couple of dinks on the incoming and that was it. Ended up with 7 or 8 keepers biggest was 36"s. Talked to a buddy who has been talking to some beach guys and he says they are seeing the same thing with the small one's and 20+ fish day's. Or take your chances in the back with some better size fish but maybe just a couple. What do I think? I'm going trolling first nice day I can cause I'm turning into a clam. Unless I hear otherwise that is:rolleyes:.

I would try to look along the bars first. Safety first of course. Small hooks and smaller pieces of clam. If the boats are out thick tomorrow try to find areas that can be fished without people blasting by you or cutting behind you.

John I just assumed the incoming was going to be like it was when I was out Tuesday, 11/14. I did better on the incoming that day keeper wise then the outgoing. Funny thing was the water looked the same yesterday as it did on Tuesday except for the wind direction and sun blinding me. I made sure I got wrapped up before I dropped anchor and that payed off cause everytime a wave rolled under the boat the wind blew the top of it right back at me. I would have been soaked in a half hour and heading for a warm truck. I'll most likely be back out this Monday and do a half inlet half ocean kinda day.

Outgoing was a bust today. Fished the last of the incoming and all of the out going. 1 18 inch striper. Outer bars were a rollling wall of white water. Tried to fish several areas out there, but had one come in the boat, and several threaten to, so back to the inner bars we went. Will try the incoming tomorrow afternoon into evening.

Fished the outgoing today in near the nasty breakers and all we got was a 12" ling (yes a ling) and a few otter siteings. Worked our way up to the Sea Shell Hotel and marked lots of bait and fish but unfortuately they were blues and we only managed one. Where are the stripers? Didn't hear much on the radio.

The lumps on the ocean deciede against a tog trip for us this morning. Worked our way up the beach to just past the red tower. Had good bait in 30' of water, but no bass. Picked a few nice fat blues. decided to look around outside LEI on the outgoing and marked some fish near the water color change. Trolled up and over the atomic lump and picked aways at nice fat blues and were surprised by one 29" bass that whacked a green stretch 25. Blues were caught on shad rigs, stretch 25's (blue) and shad daisy chains.

I got changed into my spare clothes I keep on board and had an extra jacket on the boat so I was back to being comfortable in a few. I have heard alot of things about fish being still being north in good numbers and even some recent fish along the local beachs of better size. If these fish decide to stay in our area it may be worth it but I think it is going to be a case of being there at the right time. Some days you'll hit it and others you'll want to hit it. Nice fish, some really nice, are still in the back so we might get them to stall out before they leave for good. Personally I don't mind catching the dinks as long as a couple "decent" fish happen by as well. Who knows maybe the water temp. will hover around the 55 area till January.
man do i respect you inlet guys. i still can't figure it out. out of 5 times fishing both times i only hit them once. my hats off to you all. as for out front, they are there. you have to look but compared to my inlet catch rate, i've been doing well out front. burning more gas, but catching fish. i agree that there is still alot of fish north and after this blow i think it will be very good. there is a ton of bait. bunker in the 6" to 8" range was thick on saturday. bass were hard to find but there were nice blues around. picked up some while playing around with the flyrod. i've also seen alot of spearing and rainfish. even seen some mullet hanging around out there. as mulica bob said, if the temps stay consistant, we will have good fishing. hope those bass slide down from ibsp and other points north. i'll be out after the blow. got to kill some ducks and geese between now and sunday.

CC19, I am not sure which is getting us the best per pound price for Striper meat. Burning lots of gas to find them, or going through bushels of clams for a few keepers? It certainly hasn't been a bargain this season for sure, either way. We are definetly earning our catches this season.

40 fish? At least, but only 2 keepers. Fished the incoming and it was like performing brain surgery at times to try to get the rats hooked. Scaled down my hook size even smaller and went with very little weight and that was the ticket, along with a very small piece of clam. Still would miss at times but not as bad.
BUT!!! After dealing with the rats and the incoming approaching it's end a few birds started to work there way towards the bars and some even managed to make it into the wash. What were these birds chasing you ask? Bunker of course, and not those little guys either. Nice big blues came within casting distance of my anchored boat, nice break, say 10 to 15lb average size with a few bigger.
Decided to troll for about an hour and after sitting with rats most of the day I banged 7 stripers from 30 to 37 inches, and a mystery fish that refused to show himself/herself. Several of the large blues were caught as well.
Who say's hard work doesn't payoff?:D
Be out again tomorrow.

John, I have been seeing clams in my sleep! My hands seem to have a permanent clam smell to them as well. It was definately a day to be on the water, fish or no fish!
Went out again today and was hard not to catch stripers or blues. Seemed like just about everywhere I went I could get a bunch, problem was keepers were not as easy to come by. Several times I was able to run into birds that were working along the beaches and Big Blues with small Stripers were smashing bait. The action would die almost as quick as it started though. Jigging and trolling Stretch 20's were the ticket, with trolling catching the "larger" stripers. As you can tell most of my work out front was in less than 25' of water.
Best Striper of the day was in the back bay on the last of the incoming tide. Had a few clams left so I chopped them up and managed to catch a 40incher. Thank you very much Mr. Backbay. That's were I'll be again if I run clams as long as it doesn't cool off too much before I get back out there next week.

MB - for the last week, we haven't been able to put a bass over 26" in the boat down here in Absecon. Plenty of fish, but no size to them. It seems most of the better fish have left the backwaters. The last time we saw a 40" in the back was a month ago. What's your thoughts on why your area, a few miles north, is producing much better. Thanks
Mullica Bob
11-30-2006, 05:49 PM
Right place at the right time? Just kiddin'. My fish was not the only larger fish that I saw and also heard of that was taken. A couple of fish at and over the 35" mark were taken in the LE. That is my best guess as to where those fish were taken, VHF conversations. Personally witnessed a nice size fish, 35 to 40"?, taken in the back not to far from the LE. My fish was even further in the back than that. If memory serves me last week or week and a half ago I caught that 27lber, way way in the back and I mean way in the back.
Why here and not there? Could be a few things.
-What's your water temp?
-What tide?
-Obviously you were claming but how much, how little?
-What was your depth you were fishing and what kind of structure, rip, bank or drop off or just close to deeper water?
-What did the water look like down there clear or muddy?
Could probably list a few more things that may make a difference but I doubt any one single thing may make the difference. It's probably a few small things that add up to keep a few fish hanging around or even moving in for that matter. That 40" fish came from a spot that I had tried a few times before within the last two weeks and I had not gotten a single fish from that area, why now? If I could really put my finger on it I would get them everytime!!

I don't think it's everytime MM. In fact I can distinctly remember a couple of times last year you had better fish than me, I would usually make the mistake of taking off trolling and a half hour later I'd get the news on the radio, got another. Thanks for the good words anyway.
Honestly when I fish that's all I'm thinking of and the days leading up to me fishing that's all I'm thinking of. It's my addictive personality. Call it weird but when I get out there I just kind of get a hunch or something will feel a little off and I'll make a small adjustment and it will pay off. Some of the best info I ever got was a year I spent fishing off of a beach and learning how to read water and things like timing and tides. It has come a long way since then and I finally feel like I have an idea of when the fish have a good chance of showing up. Hell you could even say I will the fish to me:confused:.

MB - I believe all the variables that we have control over are practically the same. My question is, do you think Mullica River being a spawning type of habitat holds more fish and for longer periods, over say backwaters of Brig/Absecon? Water temp. is hovering around 50, and we hit every type of structure/habitat available to us, while chumming clam heavily. But the fact remains that the bigger fish have basically moved out.
There are some people that just catch more fish, but with all else being equal, my question remains, do you think your area in general is more productive than say 10 miles south?
Mullica Bob
11-30-2006, 09:21 PM
I'll say my area is productive. But if it is more productive than another who knows. I don't fish anywhere other than the Mullica, Great Bay, LE Inlet and the beaches from Barnegat to Absecon Inlet. I can count on one hand how many times I have fished the "back waters" south of Great Bay and I tell you this because for me to make a determination as to whether my area has bigger or more fish I would have to have some experience in your neck of the woods. The Egg Harbor river probably gets a better spawn than the Mullica so would that mean the fishing should be better around it tailwaters right now?
Bottom line is the river may just give a bit of an advantage but there is no way to know for sure!
MyMistress
11-30-2006, 09:57 PM
Not an expert by any means, but I suspect this time of year the backwater fish want quick and easy access to the inlets and deeper channels to run to and from them, so if the back waters you are working are to far or have shallow paths, that may have an effect. All of the back bay areas behind LE Inlet all the way to the River offer direct and deep channels as highways. I also suspect the Rivers do hold a higher population of resident fish that patrol these highways between the river and inlet. So the great bay/LE inlet area and back behind Ocean City may have an advantage over non-river fed back bay areas. Same is true in early spring. I think it is the opposite in the summer months. Seems like your back bay areas see more action in the summer nights than our area. Just my thoughts. It also depends on food supply. If the bait is there, they will be there, if not, they will be else where.

Everyone have a good holiday season and a safe winter.
MB, don't hurt your back shoveling snow this winter, I need you to be healthy and put me onto those cows in the spring!!!

Don't worry my wife's back is in great shape.:D
I got some serious spring fever all ready. Hopefully my work schedule will allow for maximum fish time. I'll show you the spring madness up here first hand.

Dave / Ocean Addict Where did you go up the beach from?
From LEI. We were fishing the Brant Beach shoal off LBI.
Thanks, its nice to hear the fish are still to the North.

Thanks for the offer LJ, but I only have off on weekends, and I have to get the boat cleaned up and tucked away, and then get the Xmas shopping done. If I do get any time in between and it's nice enough, I'll re-activate the golf game I put on hold for the fall Striper run.
MB, I will be ready!
