Hi guys:
I've been a lurker for a while and you guys have been a tremendous help.
I have gotten my 7-year old daughter into fishing (generally just fluke so far) but after seeing some pictures of me with some stripers I caught a couple of years ago, she is dying to go striper fishing (now if I can only get her to golf as well).
Anyway, I was wondering if it was appropriate to try and get on an open boat charter with her or is she too young and would just get in the way? Also, can anyone recommend any boats in the Atlantic Highlands area?
If we can't get on an open boat, I think we are going to try a party boat--any thoughts??
Thanks for the help.

thanks for the info--do you think there would be any problems bringing a 7-year old kid??

For what it's worth, a friend of mine will be bringing his 8-year old son along on a charter with me tomorrow, so, long as she can handle the waves, I don't see why not. Heck, get a good 10-12 lb'er on there and let her have some fun with it!!!

Also Captain Frank Tenore, Fins on Feathers, captfranktenore@msn.com has several open boat trips per week this time of year.

Thanks again for all the help. She was bugging me last night about going, so it looks like we'll be giving it a shot on saturday--though I think we will try one of the party boats--her mother has a thing about small boats (anything under 60 ft!!).

Just go to the marina in AH..plenty of good headboats to choose from there...

what tautog said - Fins n Feathers is a great boat - I've fished with them probably a dozen times - always a good time.

My daughter started at 6, my son at 5. Good head boats cater to the kids and they will be hooked for life. Just make sure the weather is good. My problem now is my son wants to go with me on school days and cant understand why I can sneak out and he cant. GREAT STUFF:)

NG, If your going on a party boat go on the Angler (used to be the Teal). Capt Dan always puts you on the fish and the mates are great. They might be only doing evening trips now and if so try the Sea Horse. Very family friendly.:) Good Luck.

Just wanted to report back on the results. We went out on the Teal on saturday afternoon--3:30 to 9:00. My daughter was beside herself excited from the moment she woke up saturday morning to go. Great boat, very friendly mates. Unfortunately, it was a terrible night for fishing--only seemed to be about 10 fish caught the entire trip and only 3 keepers. We got skunked. After about 90 minutes, she packed it in and just had fun seeing what everybody else was doing. Maybe I can bring her on a boat as an observer for no or limited charge--$35 for kids plus rod rental is a little steep!!

tried that on a charter for a friend this past summer and the capt. wouldn't go for it, citing USCG regulations that any passenger had to pay regardless of age. Didn't give book, chapter & verse, just said it was regulations. Perhaps some charter capt's can confirm or de-bunk this. As far as the price, $35 ain't bad, really. Pretty standard price.
