What is the general concensus on Flouro Vs Mono for striped bass rigs?
is it necessary to have flouro? or is mono just as good?
ive read a few articles that said flouro is a must, and others that said it doesnt matter...
whats your opinion?
also, i am assuming premade striper rigs use flouro? or do the companies cheap out and use thick mono?

I use flouro for all my bait rigs, mono for trolling.

I agree with Younger. In the bay all my leaders are Flouro. When Bucking in the rips- a leader is not even necessary in a pinch. I'm not taking a chance with it- Flouro all the way.

Floro is so exspensive i hate buying it, but i always use it. Last tuna trip i went through a roll of 80lb in one night, i was pissed. I use it for everything but trolling.

It's all in the mind. If fluoro gives you confidence then use it.
I have pictures of my grandfater holding big stripers before mono was even invented. Old dacron leaders or some kind of waxed string was what they had to work with.
My question is what does it mean to a striper or any other fish if it can see a leader? Is it telling them that this is a trick and there is a fisherman up top with a rod and reel connected to the leader? If fish suddenly got smarter then you would think that that big old 9/0 or 10/0 steel hook sticking out of the bait would send a message. Look at the entire picture. 30 pound or stronger line (braid) Swivel and sinker slide. Big chunk of lead and a large hook. There is enough stuff there for McGiver to build a car yet we need an invisible leader. Bottom line is, I know it's a leader and you know it's a leader but the fish doesn't have a clue.
This came over the radio one time on a tuna trip. We were using 50 pound fluoro leader and nothing. Switched to 30 pound fluoro and we are hooking up......If fluoro is invisible then thats like saying I can see the invisible because he is fat.
People tell me of trips where the only person catching fish was the one using fluoro. I have seen times when only one or two people were catching and they were using mono.
I have fished more than most and have tried fluoro and mono leaders. The only difference I can attest to is that I don't like the knot strength of fluoro.
Some swear by fluoro. Like I stated at the top. If it gives you confidence then by all means use it.

fred well stated. i use flouro but often asked myself the same thing. i have heard of people sharking and catching tuna on steel shark rigs.
also i have some spools of momoi diamond. its advertised as less visable. i may try that some day. also with the muddy water in the delaware bay i wonder how a fish could see the leader. sometimes i have a hard time seeing topside on the boat.
with that being said, i will be in the bay this weekend using fluoro left over from our tuna trips this summer.

The only advantage to floro for stripers is that it is easier to tie knots with.

Fluro, Fluro, Fluro I will not chance with out it. It is expensive but if you buy it in quantity it's not tooo bad. When it comes to fishing I don't/can't go cheap.

It's not necessary most of the time but I don't want mono on my rig the one day it matters so for the little bit I go through in a season, ALL my leaders are flouro.

anybody know if generic, pre-made striper rigs used flouro or mono?

I was affilated with the first fluoro importers in the early eighties. Many have expressed the opinion that fluoro is used for a lot of reasons primarily due to it being invisible undrwater.
First off it is "not " invisible underwater it's light reflective qualtities are equal to or near that of water & therefore is a "lot" less visible especially in clear water conditions, Also fluoro does not conduct light.Yes some mono's actually conduct light, they can actually glow under certain conditions.
Why you should use fluoro is that in my opinion it 's qualties make it the perfect ld ,material.
It can be straightened easily, it's tougher than mono with abrasive qualties due to it being slighlty thicker than comparable mono, it can be joined by many mono knots & does exibit good knot strength.it can be crimped as well, it's less visible under most conditions, note, 100% fluoro, do not mix well with mono's,hence those fluoro lines are defecient in overall knot performance. Hope this sheds some light on the use of fluoros. There is really no big down side !

Beat me to it Capt. Lou ......... visibility, or, lack thereof, to the fish is only one reason to use Flouro ......... better resistance to abrasion also makes it a must, IMO. I've had slammer blues try to chew through 40lb flouro & fail.

it seems to me that stripers are not leader shy. I stopped using flouro all together(for stripers) and usully go with 60 or 80lb mono. To be honest the majority of my bigger fish (30s, 40s, and 50) have been caught tied straight to power pro. Even fish straight wire when theres big blues around. Just my opinion but flouro is overpriced and its importance is overemphasized.

I've used both over the years and have seen no difference in the amount of fish caught. I now use mono line for my leaders on my striper rigs.

Pilings, oyster bars, mangrove roots, etc. Mono doesn't stand a chance. Flouro is very tough. 20 pound flouro is more abbrasion resistent and works a plug alot better than 30 pound mono.

I use flourocarbon for all my bass bait rigs, boat and surf. Most of us spend hundreds to thousands of dollars to get us to the place and time of the actual hook up with the bass, don't go cheap on your terminal tackle, it is the one thing connecting you to the bass.

Tested 30# Seagar flouro on a school of tailor blues and caught 18 and the line finally parted on #19. I don't think the mono could have matched that performance. I mostly use flouro on all my rigs.
