LBI ~ Long Beach Island
Long Beach Island is a barrier island (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barrier_island) along the Atlantic Ocean (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlantic_Ocean) coast of Ocean County (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ocean_County%2C_New_Jersey), New Jersey (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Jersey) in the United States (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States). It is about 18 miles long (29 kilometers) and half a mile wide at its widest point. The island has been continuously settled since 1690. As of the United States Census, 2000 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Census%2C_2000), a total of 8,556 people in these six communities called Long Beach Island home on a year-round basis. The population in these communities swell significantly with part-time residents and tourists during the summer.
Long Beach Island is known for its extreme affluence and high quality of life. As LBI lies not far from New York City (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_City), many of the summer residents are financial executives resting from the stress of Wall Street and the corporate life.
During the summer months, the island is a hotbed of tourist activity; many from New Jersey and from the neighboring New York (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York)/Pennsylvania (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pennsylvania)/Connecticut (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Connecticut) area own vacation homes referred to as "Beach Houses" that they themselves either summer in or rent out. The island is also known as a base for many long-range recreational fishing and charter boats, whose trips can range from 10-100 miles from one of the island's three inlets (at Barnegat Bay (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barnegat_Bay), in the north, and Beach Haven and Little Egg Harbor (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Egg_Harbor) in the south.)
The historic Barnegat Lighthouse (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barnegat_Lighthouse) is located in Barnegat Lighthouse State Park (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barnegat_Lighthouse_State_Park) at the northern tip of the island along the Barnegat Inlet (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barnegat_Inlet).
Long Beach Island is also famous for housing the original Ron Jon Surf Shop (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ron_Jon_Surf_Shop) in Ship Bottom (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ship_Bottom%2C_New_Jersey), as well as the landmark, Lucielle's Oh Fudge! Candies. Lucielle's has a giant salt water taffy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salt_water_taffy) out front, a candy which was first created in nearby Atlantic City (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlantic_City%2C_New_Jersey).
Road access to Long Beach Island is available via Route 72 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Route_72_%28New_Jersey%29), which crosses Manahawkin Bay (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Manahawkin_Bay&action=edit) via the Dorland J. Henderson Memorial Bridge, which is famous for its "String of Pearls", a row of lights mounted on the railings lining the entire bridge. The bridge is scheduled to be expanded and a new span will be added in a few years.
The island was rocked by storms in 1992, 1923, and most famously, in 1962, which almost destroyed the island. During the March 1962 storm (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ash_Wednesday_Storm_of_1962), in the Harvey Cedars (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harvey_Cedars%2C_New_Jersey) section of the island, a new Inlet was temporarily formed and several homes and shops floated away or were destroyed.
The island is divided by the Route 72 Causeway (erected after the 1962 storm). This new bridge replaced a low-level, two-lane automobile bridge that was formerly a railroad crossing. A somewhat infamous 1970's article in Philadelphia Magazine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philadelphia_Magazine) quipped that the "haves turn right and the have mores turn left." Nominally accurate, the "down island" community of Beach Haven (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beach_Haven%2C_New_Jersey) features historic and elegant Victorian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victorian_architecture) homes that have survived the many storms. The south end of the island contains significantly more commercial zoning, which generally decreases as you travel north.
The north end of the island includes the communities (north to south) of Barnegat Light, Loveladies, Harvey Cedars, North Beach, and Surf City.
The community of Loveladies was mostly developed after the 1962 storm. The developers attracted a large number of psychiatrists and was referred to as "couch cove." Loveladies is home to the Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts and Sciences.
The movie Jaws (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jaws_%28film%29) is based on a the book Peter Benchley book ofthe same name (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Benchley#Jaws), which is based on the Jersey Shore Shark Attacks of 1916 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jersey_Shore_Shark_Attacks_of_1916), a real life series of shark attacks which began on Long Beach Island.

IBSP ~ Island Beach State Park
Island Beach State Park is a New Jersey state park (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_New_Jersey_state_parks) located just south of Seaside Park (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seaside_Park%2C_New_Jersey) on the Barnegat Peninsula (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barnegat_Peninsula) in Ocean County, New Jersey (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ocean_County%2C_New_Jersey).
The park is the largest reserve of undeveloped barrier island in New Jersey and one of the largest in the United States.[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Island_Beach_State_Park#_note-0) The park is divided into two areas. The Island Beach Northern Natural Area covers 659 acres, some of which is restricted to the public. The Southern Natural Area is much larger at 1,237 acres. The park includes the Sedge Island Marine Conservation Zone, which includes about 1,600 acres of tidal marshes, creeks, ponds, and open water.
Coming in from the sea-front, a visitor ascends over a large primary dune covered in tall grasses and down into a narrow maritime forest, consisting of many tall bushes and short trees including holly (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holly), goldenrod (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goldenrod) and black cherry (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_cherry). Approaching the bay side, one finds reeds and a muddy estuary that is home to blue crabs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_crab) and herons (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heron) and other marine birds. The Barnegat Inlet (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barnegat_Inlet) is located at the southern tip of the park, separating the Barnegat Peninsula (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barnegat_Peninsula) from Long Beach Island (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long_Beach_Island).
Swimming, kayaking, and fishing are permitted in some areas of the park. Four wheel drive vehicles are permitted onto the beach with a permit
