78 some pounds and it was caught by a guy named Al in AC. There are lots of interviews and articles on the subject. Google it.

Al McReynolds pulled this World Record striper from the Atlantic fishing at night off the Vermont Ave. jetty in Atlantic City following days of September Nor'easter storming in 1982. The fish was taken on a 5 1/2-inch long Rebel Black-back silver minnow plug on 20-pound test line. It took one hour and 40 minutes to land the fish on the slippery jetty. The fish measured 53 inches in length with a 34 1/2 inch girth, and was estimated to be 20 - 22 years old. Its 78 pound 8 oz. weight earned it the IGFA (http://www.igfa.org/) all-tackle record

The thing that kills me is that he caught a 15.5 pound weakie on the cast before he caught that mama. What a night of fishing I would have been happy with either fish.

Here we go again , with the rumor mill , this thing has been hashed out so many times it is pitiful. Read some of the positive articles on Al and then make up your own mind , this guy is a true striper addict and has been all of his life, this guy went through hell over that fish, there are several guys from the barn who have crossed paths with Al and I never read 1 negative post of their contact with Al.

The sad part is the guy won a bunch of $$ and pi$$ed it all away. I saw a documentary on some sports channel. He had the chance to really profit from the catch and did everything wrong. They caught up with him in some rats nest motel in N.C. What a shame. Looked like he didnt sleep or brush his tooth for weeks. Oh well, its still 3x the weight of my biggest....the season is still young;)
I have heard a few different stories on this. I heard he got the raw end of
the deal. I hear he can still be spotted around AC.
Al is the man
It,s Gittin Deep

Just to clear things up al had to take a polygraff test because of all the rumors and as far as i know he past it.Louis
Fish Bandit you got it correct.Of the many reasons i heard why he did not catch the fish was HE WAS WEARING WHITE BOOTS and only comercial fisherman wear white boots. If people knew Albert they would say HE put in the time and effort and all things came together that nite and he deserved the fish.Any one that beats him down and voices their opinion in an open forum, without realy knowing, sound like they only want something to say.

Rumors say he got the fish from a commercial fisherman friend and weighed it saying he caught it. Other surf guys said the weather the night he supposedly caught it was so bad there was no way he could have fished on that jetty
Haters evry last one of them ! The man put his time in ...
By the way i caught 1 1/2 longer !!!! :D
