To you guys that fish the rips frequently. I run a 17' center Triumph. Never been on the CM rips but dying to try it. All I hear is they are realy ruff, I've run this boat all over the coast up to 22 miles out for Mahi (weather was right)it is fully equiped with all safety equipment, 2 vhf's and GPS. The boat is foam filled and unsinkable. I know how to handle it. Would I be out of my element out there? Of coarse I'd check NOAA forecasts ahead of time ETC. My Question, Is it worth my takeing the plunge on the right day?

Try a rip trip with Adam Bomb, it won't cost much more that running your own boat, then make your own decision.

You'll be fine. If they get too bad, you stop going through and call it a day.

Stability is the issue as you drift through what at times can be several foot breakers...on a daywith a bad SE swell it can be 5-6 breaking in there but then NOBODY is on THAT rip.

I used to have a CG guy stationed with me that would catch more bass than any 10 guys I know and he was out there regularly in a 14ft freshwater bass boat with less than 18" high gunnels...but it was stable and he was careful.....caught a ton of bass.

Pick your days and use some sense and you will be fine...eyeball where the other guys are and watch the breakers...just don't set up a drift to go through the bigger breakers....
Remember the breakers get bigger usually as the tide drops...keep that in mind...

If you go to Prissy Wicks stay away from the big breakers when the tide is really cruising, there are plenty of rip lines with smaller wave action, or head to a spot about 2 miles away from Prissy towards Delaware , I call it middle , not sure of the chart name , the rip line runs in a different direction than Prissy Wicks, plenty of area to work and its been a pretty decent producer , fished there yesterday in the Fog, because there was hardly any boat activity there and limited out with fish to 20 lbs on the incoming.

I used to run out there from Lewes in a 17 footer. Pick your days, know what your boat will do entering rips, keep your head about you and don't be shy about turning back or not fishing them if it's too snotty. Some boats drift in bow first with a nice flat attitude upon entry. Other boats will spin around and want to go stern-first, etc. Get out there when it's real calm and get a feel for it. Like already said, some rips are not as rough as others. generally the deeper water structure is smoother.

Again, exactly the response I'd thought I'd get from fellow Barners. Kind of what I thought, be careful, be smart, keep your wits about you and oh yea, follow the yellow boat! Thanks again guys, see ya on the rips, keep an eye out for a cute little 17 ftr. with two die hard Fly Rodders.
