Just got an email asking why our trip did not sail in the last few days! To all those who think that Captains might make the wrong call sometimes...I have this to say....Will we every make the right one? I, as most people need to earn my paycheck! I like having money, when I don't work...I will not have any! So If you trip was canceled in the past, I'm sorry...but I feel as though I was doing the right thing by not making you drive the 2 or 3 or 5 hr drive so that I could tell you at the dock that we are not going!

Never easy to take when you've taken a day off from work to fish and weather intervenes...but it's much better to have it cxl'd then being out there in bad conditions. Skip based on the way the bite was last week, I'm sure you were the last person wanting to cxl a trip.

Skip You did the right thing!
With each days forcast we have to figure in the size of the boat we are running and how OUR boat will handle the sea conditions in the area where WE are fishing. We have to think of Safety and comfort for our fares.
Why get Your butts kicked when You can do it another day.
Yesterday a few of us decided it was not a good day to go and we will stand by that.
Now with that being said,Skip is getting a 2hr headstart today because he has 2 trips so he can call me and let me know where to go:D :D
Life is good when You leave late:cool:

You are doing the right thing. This is why I always carry a surf rod, too. Some guys hope against hope and wait til the last minute to call it off. Then it's, 'Since I'm here, may as well fish the beach.' Not really a big deal, but...
Nobody wants to hit it more than you. I've seen you predict the weather. (amazing) If you say no, that's good enough for me. I'll save the drive and go back to bed. :)

If my house is shaking from the 30kt. NW wind, I could only imagine what the boat would be doing!
Really, the thing I hate the most is calling a charter after they have been looking forward to a trip for months and telling them we cannot get out, especially when the bite is on fire!!! Believe me, just because we have to cancel, doesn't mean the bills stop coming in. Obviously it hurts us when the trips are cancelled, we would like to get out everyday, but unfotunately we have to deal with mother nature!
It really stinks catching over 100 fish one day, knowing they are there and not being able to get out the next...Trust the cappys, they are checking the forcasts every minute, looking at the seas, and down here in the elements.

Hey Skip, Adam and Capt. Badfinger. I have met, fished or fished along side all you guys so I think I can throw my .02 cents in. I am sure as you know your always gonna have some people grumbling, its that way everywhere, every job, company, section of society. Just want you guys to know that they are plenty of customers that appreciate all your guys knowledge and expererience in not only catching fish but deciding when conditions are unsafe or unfriendly to fish. I don't know shit about tides, North wind South winds, cross winds etc....But I do know that you guys know and so I don't have to worry about making a decision whether it is safe or advisable to go out fishing on a particular day. The majority of your fares would expect no less in your judgement and stand by your decisions.
Please don't ever allow your decisions on whether to go out on a bad day ever be influenced by a few unhappy complaints. All of our families would appreciate it! That's all..............Bob E

Also...
When any of our charters check the wind conditions on our website, DO NOT check the weather channel link, this is the forcast on land, which we use for temps and rain, not for the wind out on the water.
For instance the weather channel says it is blowing 9MPH, which it does right now. It is actually gusting around 20 in the rips and the ocean.
Check the NOAA forcast, not that they are always correct, but this is what to go by.
Use the LOWER DELAWARE BAY forcast for the most part, andcheck COASTAL WATERS FROM GREAT EGG INLET TO CAPE MAY NJ OUT 20 NM-
COASTAL WATERS FROM CAPE MAY NJ TO CAPE HENLOPEN DE OUT 20 NM- to get an idea of what it really will do, I would say a little between both of these forcasts...for instance, right now the lower bay says 10 to 15kts, and the ocean says gusts to 25kt. Right in between is 20kts. and that is what it is actually doing. That is why I am home on the computer instead of fishing!:D
I am sure up in PA, and South Jersey it feels warmer, sunny and nice with light wind, but alot of times it is a whole other story down here. You have to keep that in mind to.
Just letting you know what we use, and so some of you can keep track and this in the future.

Skip, you are the Captain, THEY ARE NOT. These customers have to understand that out of all people you are the one that is loosing money by not going. In addition, the customers have to realize that you are not ALL about money, but a serious captain, looking for their safety and their well being.
SKIP, KEEP DOING THE RIGHT THING, THAT’S WHY YOU ARE A WELL RESPECTED CAPTAIN WITHIN THE COMMUNITY AT YOUR AGE.
Ps. To those customers:
It is understood that you took a vacation day, drove a distance to come down, looking forward to catch fish, but sometimes $h%t happens, chill out!!

skip I've been out with you many times and you've never put us in a hairy situation, because of your good judgement and knowledge of the area. I know how eager I get days before a trip, and it kills me when the weather doesn't cooperate, but i think some people don't realize how quick the rips can turn into a disaster zone if you push it on the wrong day. So hope fully the week is nice and I'll see you on Friday, it seems like there are alot of fishing coming your way and I have some questions about DOA.

I guess that's the one downfall about being a charter captain, dealing with yahoos. You would think these people would be calling you by looking at the weather reports and seeing what it has been blowing like recently. People like that have never been in shi**y conditions and sometimes I think they need to see what it is like to learn their lesson. Enter the "School of Hard Knocks!"

I've had trips canceled due to the weather on the Stalker, and never once did I think it was the wrong call. Keep up the good work Skip!
Seems ridiculous to get upset the capt cancelled a trip, I have been more upset that a capt didnt cancel a trip than that he was considerate enough to realize that getting your butt kicked or not catching is no fun.
