On nov 15 i caught a tagged striper at the 20 ft slu in the bay. i called the info in to the nj game and wildlife and they said they would send me info on its life. I recieved it today, it was tagged on may 15, 2001 in the deleware river in pennsylvania, it was measured at 20.25" and was awild fish. When i caught it it was 27.5". It makes you wonder how old some of these fish are like the cows we catch. This fish only grew 7 inches in almost 6 years. They sent me a nice certificate and a hat. It was nice to know the backround on the fish. catchem up guys

Great to hear some people actually care. It seems like alot of people anymore are just out for the meat and alot don't know where to look for a tag.

had a berkeley striper club meeting last week and found out about the tagged fish i caught back in dec. get this is was tagged by a gentleman i have fished with for years down a the barny inlet, cool thing about this fish is that he tagged it on vacation on july28 of this year on the beaches of maine,Pophem beach and it was 22 " grew about an inch,if i am ever lucky enough to catch a another w/a tag ,i'm gonna get the number off the tag instead of taking it off,and re-release it... cool beans

GREAT TO HEAR MORE GUYS TURNING IN TAGS
I have over 5000 bass tagged with ALS tags and have had several recaught after being out over 7 years., couple over 8 years
Average growth is 1"per year once they get to 18", under 18" they will grow 2-3" per year. Once over 34" the growth rate slows way down to about 1/2" a year,

So you're saying a 50" Striper may be 54 years old?
18"/(3"/yr) = 6 years
34 - 18 = 16/(1"/yr) = 16 years
50 - 34 = 16/(.5"/yr) = 32 years

54 years to reach 50". Is that right?

after 34 " the growth rate is real slow 2-40" tagged in Delaware bay were recaught around Cape Cod 2 years later ,one hadn't grown at all and the other was only 1/2" of growth

I have been reading striped bass scales for quite a few years now and the oldest bass i've seen was 26yrs. and that came off a 44lb fish, so i dont think that math is correct. Those numbers are just averages, a fish who stays in warmer waters throughout the year is going to grow faster than the average fish.

how confident can you be that lengths are measured to the fork in the tail and not using the pinched tail method? Measuring to the fork in the tail is standard, correct?

Good point, i know that anyone bass that was first tagged by the NJ F&W has both the fork length and total length record. i always thought the standard method was total length though, thats what the regs go by, i believe.

Nice, I just started tagging three years ago. So Far I have 545 total. The first 2 years I did not tag every fish but I did tag about 100 in 2004 & 100 in 2005. In 2006 I tagged 342 largest being 44". I actually caught 2 Lit Soc Tagged back this year, neither were yours though and tagged/released with my own...

Nice numbers though.... This year I should be able to tag anywhere from 400-500 it just depends on how late into the season I tag.....

Flip flop, how many tagged fish did you have returned so far? That is a hell of alot fish that you have tagged to date. I only tagged about 40 fish and have had 4 recaught so far. The biggest striper that I tagged was a 45" last year in the Delaware river.

So far I have had 5 returned. 3 were kept by the guys who caught them and 2 were returned... These are all ocean and bay fish...2006 was the most by year for me so I should see some more return in 2007.... The most recent was caught of VA Beach in November that I tagged in October.
