View Full Version : To Catch A Theif!

Well from what I am hearing that these marina's have a security problem. What is their deal on theft? Why dont they make it more secure like maybe a guard gate were you have to sign in or if they have a public dock a sign in with your tag number and id? I am truely amazed that these theifs are so brazin to have the guts to steal in the open like this. I was thinking of how do you catch a theif? Well I know what i would do. I would set the jack offs up. i mean good to. a littl 2 step i call it. the bait rods reels with a tracking device almost like lo jack this is not a cheap option but surely a slam dunk! Another way is to put up servalance camera inconspicuous places. Sit and wait and watch. Once a theif has had a taste at an easy target such as a marinia i bet he would come back. And this is were you must become smarter then they are think as they do and be patient. I would ask the authorities what they are doing to crack down on it also and let them know what your intentions are or not depending on what your going to do once u catch them. Another way hire a private investigator. Maybe get a bunch of people who dock at the marina in on it with ya and chip in for the investigator. Any how would love to hear some ideas on how you would catch a theif that intrudes on your sanctuary of life. Set up time.

What makes you think the thieves aren't reading your thread. Instead of posting the stuff on the internet, just set up your own sting. Do your homework. HAPPY DAYS.

I hope you guys are reporting these thefts to the police. If they see a common thread, they'll make extra patrols and keep a better eye out on the marinas. If they go unreported, they can't help. They do not turn the reports into the insurance company's so you don't have to worry about that. Speaking from experience, criminals get way to greedy and almost always get caught, the police officers just need to know that this is going on to catch these A holes. Lastly, your instincts are normally right, so if you see something out of place or if something smells fishy, it probably is. Write down tags if a vehicle is suspicious looking, or if you see someone out of place, get a description and keep an eye on them. DO NOT approach, call the police and wait for them to approach the guy. The key is to be a good witness and wait for the good guys to do their jobs. Use good sense to prevent yourselves from being victims.

Problem is they blend in. Could look just like a couple guys going to their boat fishing.Picked up your rods and walked down the dock like nobodys business. Could have thown them in the dumpster and came back for them after you left. Think about it. What would you say to 2 guys walking down the dock carying a couple rods to a boat on the dock? need to put a couple rods out in the open with lojack installed. I lost a pair of Penn 50's and a milk crate full of offshore lures. I was ready to ......you know what. Kind of makes you wonder. Sorry for the loss. Everyone has to keep their eyes open.
Putting fear into someone on the internet is not a very effective venue. They weren't afraid to steal the equipment. They now know you want to do something about it. They probably don't think you will. They are not stupid, they just have better equipment now. Most marinas don't cover your loss. They also don't offer much for security. Events such as Mardi Gras, super bowl games, and tournaments, attract many thieves, pick pockets, and flim flam artists, from all around. They know tourists are well equipped with dinaro and supplies. They also know tourists are not as aware of their surroundings as the regulars. They have nothing but time to wait and watch. When the moment of chance arises, bingo, they are in. It paid off for them. Notify the marina owners, the police, and your insurance companies. Best of luck, and have a HAPPY DAY.

I was at Breezee lee very early (5:00 ish) Friday morning morning waiting for my buddy to launch at the ramp. I was the first vehicle in the parking lot as you come into the marina under the street light. Organizing the tackle and bait A blue van drove over by your and Adam's parking lot, circled and came back out. Didn't think much of it at the time. I will be down in your marina a lot in the next few weeks. I will definitely watch my gear as well as any left unattended.

I am new at BZL and cannot believe what I am hearing. These peodple must be really dumb. I see people there all the time even in the middle of the night. Well let me tell you somthing, If I catch any thief touching my stuff I will put the fear in his eyes way before the police get him. I hope the trama centers around Cape May are good, because he will need one. One thing I cannot stand is somebody taking somebody elses hard earned fishing gear. I will use this person as and example for anybody else wanting to steal from us.

A a security specialist I can tell you the cheapest way to catch these guys is very simple. Security cameras go a long way and are the biggest deterrent one can have-especially at a marina-one coming in, one going out, and a couple on the docks and parking lot. They can record for over a week straight, and only record movement so they're easy to track when something goes down. I hope marina owners are hearing this because its really low cost compared to losing your customers to a "better protected" marina.

It's not just rods. Some s%#thead stole 100+ eels from my dock during the day at the Utsch's tournament. This is the 2nd time in 3 years. They must have pulled in to my slip while I was away.

I say we find them, and use them to attract sharks. Then right when one is about to attack them take them out of the water. Do tis numerous times, and they will be in shock due to the fact wwho knows when we would just leave them in there. Or attach them to the back of the boat and take a trip around showing them off and letting everybody know who they are so they donot hit again.

I'll have to read all these comments.
Back in April put boat in the slip and 1 week later 8 of the new gold Smith rod holders gone- 80$each.
Happend in a very good marina, but I'm first one in the water. Was is such a shock, never reported it.
I've never bought anything relating to fishing 2nd hand. I don't see Vhf etc. for sale, they stay with the owner or sell with the boat.
It seems to easy to mark reel/rod for identifcation, so why would these people steel?
My father and I have taken people out to the canyon etc. for no money, just to be nice. Now on our 2nd set of new cumming eng. and 3rd set of transmission and still not asked for no money.
1/2 people we took for 25yrs. we didn't even know their last name.
But theft, why? I give so much away.
If I see anthing relating to the van or stole rods I'll let all hear about it!
Very sorry about the theft- this is a hobby to have fun and releive work stress not make stress.
