Jettie Jock and I slipped into water after 10:50 PM behind Strathmere. Another amazing night with bass, no w*#!, the stars, and a good friend. Pink finesse brought two to the yak. A black Yozuri claimed a 34" fat boy that towed the yak. We heard a lot of splashing around the west bank. Picture to follow, thanks to JJ!!

I thought this was a forum to share information and tips. It's Whale Creek not Willie's Creek. You know anyone unfamiliar with it is going to end up with a bent prop, unless they walking or using a paddle.

Well , to each his own, I spend little time in Whale creek so doesn't bother me but should bother a yakker when boat traffic gets heavy as a result of giving spots.
I give spots to follow fisherman who understand the need to be quiet and not run over your line when pulling in a fish BUT don't put it on the internet so EVERYONE finds out.
I've been burnt and you will too and than you too will be careful about giving out spots
Good luck and tight lines,if I see you on the dock I'll give you some real good yakking spots but not on internet

yakass,

not to break the idea of your post, but what do you wear to go into the water on the yak? i have a yak and go out on it when the water is warm, but the water is a little nippy now.

thanks in advance

slicker, now you could get away with waders, and a semi dry or dry top. a wetsuit would even suffice as long as the air temps not too cold. once we are looking at the 50s has the highs, then a pair of waders with a dry top is a must. remember the rule of 100: if the air and water temperature don't add up to 100, then don't go in the water on a yak.

Slicker, doyle007 gave you great advice. Waders and a dry top are definitely more comfortable. Gloves, hat, headlamp, and a partner.

i'm kinda new to the yak scene and they are a blast. i never heard the 100 rule before, interesting. i have been pricing the dry suits that they sell, but they are an investment ($$$). your information is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Skip the waders! Tough to swim in those when they fill up with water. Wear a wetsuit and a pfd as part of your layers. Go with a buddy. I fish a yak into December. My rule is more like an 80 rule. Caught em in 39* water with the air temps about the same.

While you are right about being tough to swim with waders filled with water the use of a dry top over them makes this a great combo. A good dry top ($100-150) will have nemopreme seals around the neck, wrists and waist. This will slow the water from entering into your waders. I have jumped off my yak on surf beachings in water over my head and found no water in my waders. I was only in the water for a few minutes and I am sure the longer you remain in the water the more water will find its way in.
For those that think the water filled waders will pull you under, I saw a TV show that demonstrated the oppisite. Two guys in chest waders in a river were observed to float. As the temperatures drop the most important thing to remember is knowledge and practice of reentering your kayak from the water. Once you try it a few times you should be able to reenter your yak in a couple seconds before the cold water takes its effect.
Finally, Try to Kayak with a friend when ever possible.

like jettiejock said, a dry top (not a semi-dry, but a real, bonified dry top) will keep the water out of your waders, and basically makes your whole get-up a dry suit. water will eventually find it's way into the dry top, and then your waders, but if you happen to flip at this time of year wearing the dry top and waders, then you'll stay dry, and will be able to get back on your yak (if it's a sit on top).

be safe.

I've benn yak fishin for a few years. I wear waders. Stocking foot to be exact. And yes, they float you, not sink you. You'll sink faster than a mob informant if you wear rubber waders though. I yak fish up until dec. 31. some times I can't feel my fingers and toes, but those are the prices you pay.

Capt Al, just thought I would take a few days off and give you some extra opportunity !!!!

Seriously, my daughter is getting married Saturday so had to quit fishing for a few days.
Fished rips Tues and will be back there next Tues and than back in my boat for 3-4 more weeks

i really appreciate all this information guys. to be honest, i always thought that you would have sunk in waders (any kind). also, i wouldn't have thought that the waders/dry top combo would be sufficient. i figured i was done on the yak until next year, but this information might get me going. i would love to hook on a striper and get towed around, lol!

thanks again, it is greatly appreciated.

ps. eelball, i like the mob informant comment!

Yakass, You've started a great thread with a lot of info for us Yakkers. I know that you and Jettyjock know your stuff. I just want everyone to know that Kayak fishing is the most fun you can have with your clothes on!!! I was going to try to go Monday night but it was too late and I was too busy. I need to get my priorities straight! I do plan on getting my new ride down there this Monday or Tuesday night. I've already asked Jettyjock and you are welcome too. Watch out stripers: yak attack 3 will be coming soon!!

Depends on the waders...I have neoprene and they float you just like a wet suit...without boots on they would be great in a yak...have a pfd on too as they will tent to float your legs pretty high making it tougher to keep your head up.

I guess all the native americans in the Aleutian Islands never heard the 50/50 rule!!!!

Be careful out there...especially at night...might be good if you bought one of those small waterproof handheld radios just in case....
