I LOVE to wire line troll for stripers. I use soft single straind stainless steel wire. It pull spoons and what I really like to use unbrella rigs. But when I troll a stretch I always pull with braid and about 10' of mono leader to take up the "shock" os the hit.

there are advantages and disadvantages to each type of line i think. braid can rub against the boat and/or bottom eventually creating weak spots. Plus, you will need drail weights to keep you down in the strike zone. You'll begin wondering how far out am I? How deep is the lure? etc...etc.. it can become a guessing game. At times, I have left my wire rods at the dock thinking I won't need them today. in a pinch - i converted my braided lined rods used for eeling over to trolling rigs. I use power pro line if that matters. leadcore is a nice line to use and easy to monitor when someone else is paying out the line behind the boat. if not careful, the lead will break apart inside the hollow outer shell causing you to re-line your outfit. yes wire kinks and can break but it is highly efficient because it knifes through the water. it gets you down and keeps you down. most shops will mark the wire so you will always know exactly where you are at all times. Personally, I run wire. my customers are the ones paying out the line and reeling in - not a mate. I just finished my 2nd season on the same wire with no major hiccups. i am replacing only to keep things fresh.

monitor the post here - i am sure others will post their thoughts - good luck with your decision.

What do you plan to troll?

IMO Monel wire is the only way to go. Couple of extra$. Softer, more forgiving and it is marked every 50'. I have a setup that just finished it's 4th
season. Ball bearing snap swivel-10-15' of 50lb. fluoro leader- 300-of marked Monel-spro swivel-mono backing. I use a haywire twist when
connecting to swivel. Spro swivels are much smaller and slide thru guides
better. 300' of wire will get you down about 30' with speed, tide and sea conditions thrown into the equation. Unlike mono when you hook up you
need to keep boat in gear to keep slack out of the wire, and you should avoid pumping your rod alot. Wire and spoons = big fish. Just got some t.g.t. spoons with rattles that I can't wait to try. Good luck.

Just a heads-up...the IMO part is "in my opinion"...just so you don't call around to a half dozen tackle shops looking for IMO wire. Its Monel ;)

Mark you don't show it in your post but I have seen it (wire line) on the shelf at Cabela's in Hamberg, PA and it's marked every 50'. If I rember right it was about 25 to 35 bucks for 200'

Try using these umbrella rigs with the pearl shad bodies
from 9'ers lures http://www.9erslures.com/ If it doesn't out fish any other trolling rig I'll buy it from you.:D I run 400' for when the fish are in 60' of water I just slow way down to get it that deep.

I figure I would throw it out there and see what they do with it. If they are paying attention they will catch a lot more fish. Like I said lets see what they do with it.;)

reelover-

go visit tony trebark down at sportmen's center in bordentown. he can line the reel and educate you on all this wire line stuff. he'll show you all the different types of wire etc....

like don c said - 9 er's umbrellas work wonders. fyi don c, i began two years ago switching out the inner shad bodies keeping the outer ring of shads with hooks. the inner shads or spinners depending upon your model is replaced with trophy teaser brand pockit strips with peanut bunker holographics on it. i jumped my school of peanuts from 13 to 31.

takes some practice getting use to but it looks nice and catches too!

Chris, I'll have to try that. I was on the 9'er sight last night and may buy just the arms and try riging them with Storm penut bunkers. I like building my rigs.

Hey Mark, just a heads up. You are going to need a reel that can handle wire. We were using Penn HSP113, they will keep the wire from tearing up the spool.

wire is too much hassle...I troll for stripers quite a bit and have had better/easier time of it with powerpro than I did with wire. the thinner diameter actually sinks faster than the heavier wire...wire is thick and has a lot of drag...I posted a chart some time ago that did a comparison of trolling depths achieved by different types of main line...powerpro/spider wire fished deeper than wire at the same speed and same terminal tackle

I have used the leadcore line for five years and found it to work great for pulling plugs or umbrella rigs. I got tired of people birdnesting my wire line ,putting kinks in it and loading it onto one side of the reel. I use a penn 320 level wind and it has eliminated most of the problems. It s great because you can tell anyone to let the line out to a certain color and you will know exactly how deep your lures are running. When I am pulling bunker spoons I prefer wire. The stainless is good but the monel is softer and more forgiving. I prefer the stainless because I feel that the stiffness transmitts the vibrations through the water better than the monel.

I double the leadcore line ideas. Easy to work with, doesn't cut your hands, and spools up nicely. Even if your doing the reeling one handed while fighting a fish on the other rod. If you plan to use umbrellas, shad rigs, single lures, etc leadcore is pretty good. For bunker spoons wire may be better, though it takes a 4/0 reel to handle properly. If you go lc,attach a 15' 60lb leader with a uni to uni knot
We use 330gti's for the 40 lb leadcore. BTW Most people use wire or braid....
