Those life jackets that look like real jackets are great that they sell for duck hunters and such. They're about 170 bucks but worth every penny if you go into the water...I think Cabela's is where I got mine.

I got one from West Marine. $69.00 and it will save your life. Plus, they're not all bulky so you can cast, etc. with them on. There's a reason the coast guard guys wear them...maybe they know something?

I wear my float coat at all times when running and once it gets cold I'll wear it the whoel trip. You don't have much time in 55 deg water...

Hey Dirt,
Honestly, Do you where a life jacket while fishing? I doubt it and it's for one or all of the same reasons I mentioned. "Big ,Bulky, Uncomfortable,stupid looking"
So don't patronize! Your being a hypocrite unless you do wear a life jacket every time!
While fishing the "float coat" or the Co2 thingy that look like suspenders are the only 2 options I see.

Yes you CAN find a life preserver let's comfortable. Once you get a good one, you won't even notice you're wearing it!

Only two options in my book, and I have them both. When water temp/air temp is cold, a mustang suit will save your life from exposure to freezing air out of the water if you breakdown, and will float you and prolong your ability to stay alive in the water... in the summertime, a sospender.... I like the auto inflate cause I go out alone alot... but it has gone off by itself twice when it got wet (my fault... just dumb).
Add up the cost of both of these items, and you have the cost of 1 trip offshore... where either one of them will let you see your kids again if something goes wrong....
I also don't think you will find me in an overloaded boat... but that is besides the point...
... and they only save your life if you are wearing them...

Does anyone have a chart on how long you do have in 55 degree water before Hypothermia? I am in the kayak alot now and always wear a L jacket and have practiced alot getting back in my kayak when overturning. Just curious how long you might have if a problem occurs

Here a few links for float coats. They're great, and i strongly recommend them. If you have gripes about wearing "traditional" life jackets, these are the way to go...

Here's the chart. http://www.pwcsafetyschool.com/newmexico/hb_46.html I don't know what an L jacket is. A 3mm wetsuit would extend your time, give you some bouyancy and keep you very warm in cold air.

Classic Jacket - USA :: MJ6214 CM
This is the one I own (I think it was about $165). I think it's great because it really isn't too bulky, it will keep you afloat in a situation, and you don't look like a friggin' weeny, weary a life jacket... Of course, not that anyone cares about that.I got a little 18 cc Parker that I take outside when trolling and jigging in the fall/winter, and for that I should get the jumpsuit. 55 degree water will kill you relatively quickly...

It's ironic we'er talking about life vests, when in fact this weekend at the gun mount a man was bucktailing on the bow when he went over the rail. The gentlemen had a hard time hanging on to the 27 ft boat. Before I got there he was pulled in by way of a rope ladder.
