Inlet was on fire today. Schools of herring and silversides all around. Jigged up two nice bass, caught a total of 5!!! Action was hot right at dusk. Answered a lot of my own questions today. Yesterday's sports page was the best I could do, sorry. Still on, gotta love it!!

Nice to heard of some early new year action. What inlet were you fishing? and what was the water temperature? With these nice warm days it makes you want to put the boat back in the water.

I am confused. I thought that the Striper season was closed. Are there some special regulations that I don't know about. I was pretty sure that it was illegal to fish for them in the back bay, and especially to keep them from Dec 31st to March 1.

Any info would be appreciated. Did they change the law this year?

GREAT POST!!! I just happened to take a road trip down to Avalon sunday afternoon, got there around 3 pm, and my FIRST stop was the inlet,it looked like the dead zone.NO birds, no bustin' fish,no activity at all....EXEPT one guy bye himself in a small skiff, pulling up to the bridge, then drifting away from it!!one dead stick, and jiggin' with the other.Did not see him catch anything, but he was fishing in closed striped bass waters,NOT saying he was fishing for bass...Shortly after that I greeted the Miss Chris as she pulled in,they got a couple of fish, enough for a story, not enough to keep every on happy! that's why they call it "fishin" tongue.gif

Dr. Bass,

I know it is legal to catch and possess on the ocean side of the COLREGS Line, but the question is can you possess them when you are going back to port inside the COLREGS Line??

What happens when you get back at the dock or boat ramp and Mr. CO shows up and asks whats in the box? What are you going to say "UUHHHHH I caught them in the ocean, you have to believe me!!!"

He does have to believe you. Unless he sees you fishing in the back he has to take your word, Been there, done that

Capt. Jeff:

I remember fishing in January with you at RBC. Or was that your stunt double  ?

Captain Jeff. I guess Aimless has the right answer(Thanks Aimless), I actually have not had that experience. Plus, I am a land guy after Jan 1 anyway. I have a hunch here that Bass on the Brain was insinuating that I fish/fished such illegal waters. Let me be real clear here, NO WAY. I was fishing from land for starters. I can ensure you that what I posted did happen. In addition, the action is STILL good. Really, I don't need any fines for such a thing and quite frankly would not want to be caught doing such a unethical thing. I do respect the species quite a bit folks. Also sensing a little resentment to my posting of the catch. If so, my apologies. It was meant to pump some diehards up that there are still fish to be caught!!! Many others have helped me, so that's my contribution back.
I refrain from revealing exact spots now. Obviously, considering the above posts it is NOT that easy to find the fish. My posts ,I hope ,serve other anglers/charter captains out looking for fish. It is good to know what areas are producing. I never give out specifics as was asked of me by most members. If any barners wish that I not post such info, by all means let me know. Not out to make any enemies here. Actually have made some great friends out on the water, good people. Had a barner one time holding both my legs as I tried to land a nice 20 plus pounder from a rock pile, first time a met the guy(still lost the SOB). Just my 2 cents.

We were there day after New Years sniffin around. If that's the 8th St. jetty does that mean streets 1-7 are in the inlet?

We thought it was a legal spot just for the fact that Sea Isle sits back further west than Avalon.

whatever.......too cold to fish anyway

way to go Dr. Bass!!!

KS and Dr. Bass,
I am not trying to bust your chops in any way. In fact I think it is great you guys are still hitting fish. I was not talking about fishing from land, but fishing from a boat (I assumed you were in a boat, sorry). I was just giving a word of caution because if you were in a boat you would be technically possessing fish in the back bay. I guess it is kind of a grey area but it would be kind of like catching a fish in state waters and then going outside 3-mile line. Anyway, good luck.

Bernie,
You are right, but at the time (a few years ago) I thought you could catch and release. However, as everyone now knows, "you can not take or attempt to take".

Capt. Jeff, Two yrs. ago when we were catching bass all winter a warden met us at the North Wildwood ramp when we came in. He said he'd watched us all the way in and if we'd stopped in the back he could have given us a ticket. We had bass in the boat that day. You can't catch or attempt to catch in the back but you can transport through with fish caught out front. Just don't stop the boat in the back on the way to the ramp or dock. The no possession outside 3 miles is a federal law and a different issue. That might go away soon anyway. Hope this helps clear things up since I got it stright from the horses  mouth

barnaby

aimless,

As far as hearing it from the "horse's mouth", game wardens have been known to misinterpret the regs. I had one CO tell me it was OK to fish in the back during the closed season as long as it was catch and release. That was wrong and it was from the horse's mouth. Longcast is right it is a grey area. Unless the CO follows you around all day, he has no idea of where the fish inn your box came from regardless of if he watches you come back in ;) .

Jeffy,

What's new? How's smellfish treating you?

No problem Capt. Couple of posts up was what I was referring to actually. No-one did respond yet to what these guys had in their bellies?? Somewhat unusual??

Dr. Bass,
As was posted on other threads, most likely they were sand eels with some herring and silversides mixed in. I was finding sand eels everywhere flopping on the beaches in the back and out front in late December at low tide.

Bernie,
We are starting to gear up for spring and summer. I guess you heard that Artie got a real job instead of K-B. I is about time.

Jeff,

There were herring and silversides but also what appeared to be baby peanuts?? Cant't say I am a sand eel expert though, I will assume they are long and slender??

I did hear a report that there were still peanuts in the surf off Island Beach recently. And yes, sand eels are long and slender. You'll know it if you see them.

Thanks Jeff, Aim. Nice site!!! Definelty some sand eels in there, the 36 had two huge herring that's all as well. Still think the others were baby(1-2 inches) peanuts.
