I'm going to say that it looks like tiger maple, but since you said it wasn't, could it be curly maple???

Where did you get that piece of wood??? .... we have dealt w/ some exotic woods in our plug business.. Ever hear of Argentinean Coco Bolla??? Supposed to be 2nd rarest wood in the world & cost about $100 an inch... some guy gave us a sample piece.. when you turn it you must wear long sleeves, rubber gloves & mask b/c it has a toxicity to it from the shavings... gives you a rash, but it looks pretty once it is sanded & the finish is applied.. we have turned teak, mahogany, lilac, pickled pine, etc.... each wood has it's own personality... our main wood of course is cedar & tiger maple... thanks for showing a new wood..:)
