Ok, I ordered a ton of "cheaper" plugs off of ebay. Some beaten up one's, some brand new one's etc. The thought was to use these as a beginning place for me to make my own. Practice painting and so forth on these first, then move on to making my own.

Now, some plug building questions....what type of wood is generally used?

I have a huge piece of purple heart wood in my garage that would make beautiful blurple plugs....deep purple with some blackish grain.... The stuff is dense though and is really quite heavy. Any thoughts?

Also, I have been reading through posts here and on stripers online trying to figure out painting techniques. I am going to try using spray paint prior to getting the air brush equipment....do I still need sealer?

don't even think about useing that purple heart before getting a lathe....:D maby you could give one of the guys a peice of that and show you the finished product :D yes you do still need sealler.. i use 60%linseed oil 40% minreal sprits... so others are Waterlox and tung oil... you got to get your plugs really smooth though.....

Ok, I'll throw it out there....who wants to turn me a nice plug? lol. Maybe we can work out enough for some extra blanks....say 5-10 for one turned and ready to go? Pretty plz!

I'd go peanut first to see how they came out. Never used a lathe before and I know how hard purple heart wood is to carve so I am thinking its not going to be a lot of fun trying to get it into a lure.....
