If you would like to stop by and try turning one and painting you can. This way you see what it is all about.

Well I thought it would be about $300 but it is more like $1200 and that is with pretty much everything. You nickle and dime yourself to death with small stuff like forstner bits for eyes and 18tpi Band saw blades for lip slots. Then all the wood, hardware like eyes hooks lips, weights, swivels thru wire, paint oils, etex, assorted airbrush paints.
I started with a few plug kits, then got hooked and bought the lathe. The scary thing is I make the things and never use them. Shoot me an email if you have any questions. jbigituna@yahoo.com

I may get rid of all the plug stuff and build rods too. Sounds like a good idea.:D

Greg, you think plug building is expensive, wait till you get bit by the rodbuilding bug.

I use four tools every time I make plugs.

1. Lathe. I have the turncrafter pro from Penn State Industries. Great lathe and very good bang for the buck. 180.00
2. Bandsaw. I have a Delta tabletop. 90.00
3. Drill press. I have a tabletop model I picked up from Harbor Freight for 39.00 and it does everything I ask of it.
4. Hand drill. I use my cordless and most folks already have some sort of drill.

Add a set of forstner bits. I got a 6 piece set for 20.00. I use a full set of brad point bits and really find them to be easier to use. I paid again 20.00 for these. Add a drill chuck for your lathe and a 6 inch long 1/8th inch bit for through drilling. I paid 15.00 for my drill chuck and 4.00 for a long bit. Sandpaper 10.00. Alright now you can make plugs. That list of stuff will make plugs for you.
Just remember you need to seal, prime, paint, finish and add hardware.
It's the other 1200 little items that kill you.

Greek - to much to think about  Where are the Walleyes:D :D But really, I'm going to at least be able to make decent plugs before taking up rod building - which I really want to try; but can't do everything at once. How was the trip? Hopefully the ice melts well before striper season.;)

Thanks Scarface!

phillyfishing; If you ever get out to my area in NJ. I would be happy to walk you through it. I can show you the absolute cheapest way to set up shop. That way if you do not like it you can sell it all easily. If you do like it you can upgrade your shop as you go.
My shop is still at the cheapest step but these cheap machines just whistle through cedar!!
